Pump Price Of Petrol Jumps To N1,090 In Lagos

      Mohammed Shosanya
Oil marketers have adjusted the pump price of petrol to N1,090 and N1,070 from N1,050 per liter in the Lagos metropolis, making it the third time the marketers increased pump price of petrol in three weeks.
It was learned that  fuel outlets were shut on Sunday in Lagos, a few that were selling had adjusted their price on their billboards.
Besides, while NIPCO filling stations displayed N1,090 per liter, Mobil and Ardova filling stations moved from N1,050 in the early morning on Sunday to 1,070 per liter in the evening.
The new price is a reflection of full subsidy removal of which the oil marketers now source their product directly from the market, officials said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED),has condemned the ongoing  rise in petrol prices throughout the nation.
This latest increase represents yet another wave of hardship and distress for the Nigerian populace, who were confronted last week with yet another increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS),Comrade Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi,Executive Director,Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education, said in a statement.
The group maintained that, the implications of this increase are far-reaching, affecting not only transportation costs but also the prices of essential goods and services, thereby exacerbating the already dire economic situation faced by countless families across the country.
According to the statement, the approach taken by President Tinubu in implementing economic reforms, as influenced by the World Bank and IMF, is not only heartless but also reveals a profound insensitivity to the sufferings faced by many Nigerians.
These reforms, which seem to prioritize the interests of international financial institutions over the welfare of the citizens, have led to a significant erosion of the purchasing power of the average Nigerian,it said.
It also said that, the rising cost of living, coupled with stagnant wages, has created an environment of despair and frustration among the people, who are left to grapple with the harsh realities of their daily lives.
It added:”It has become evident that the All-Progressives Congress (APC) government, which claims to offer “renewed hope,” lacks a viable plan to rectify the economic turmoil that has been largely perpetuated by those currently in power. The promises of change and improvement ring hollow in the face of escalating prices and diminishing opportunities. The government’s failure to provide a clear and actionable roadmap for economic recovery has left many citizens feeling abandoned and disillusioned.
“The stark absence of a well-defined and coherent strategy to lift Nigeria from its present economic challenges is evident in the severe difficulties that are inflicting significant suffering on the citizens. As the cost of living continues to rise, many families are forced to make impossible choices between necessities such as food, healthcare, and education. Corruption and lack of effective governance and accountability has further compounded the situation, leading to widespread frustration and a growing sense of hopelessness among the populace.
“The current situation of petrol prices in Nigeria is indeed disheartening and raises significant concerns about the management of the country’s oil resources. The recent price adjustment reflects a staggering increase of over 430 percent in petrol prices within a mere 17 months of the Tinubu’s tenure, which began on May 29, 2023. This dramatic rise is particularly alarming for a nation that is one of the foremost oil producers globally, suggesting a profound disconnect between Nigeria’s vast oil wealth and the economic realities faced by its citizens.
“Moreover, it is troubling to note that despite the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) investing billions of dollars in the rehabilitation of state-owned refineries over the past two decades, none of the four inactive refineries have managed to refine even a single barrel of oil.
“This failure raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the investments made and the overall strategy employed by the government in managing its oil infrastructure. The inability to bring these refineries back online not only exacerbates the fuel crisis but also highlights a systemic issue within the country’s oil sector.
“According to a report published in May 2023 by the Africa Oil + Gas Report, the Nigerian government allocated a staggering $25 billion for the turnaround maintenance of its four refineries from 2013 to 2023. This figure underscores the significant financial resources that have been directed toward a project that has yielded little to no results.
“In stark contrast, the Dangote Refinery, which is recognized as the largest single-train refinery in the world, was constructed over a seven-year period from 2017 to 2023 at a cost of $19 billion. This comparison highlights the inefficiency and ineffectiveness of NNPC and raises critical questions about the management and operational capabilities within the oil sector, from the President, who also serves as the Minister of Petroleum, down to the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mele Kyari.
“The juxtaposition of these two scenarios—the staggering increase in petrol prices and the failure of state-owned refineries—paints a troubling picture of Nigeria’s oil industry. It suggests a need for urgent reforms and a reevaluation of the strategies employed by the government to ensure that the country’s oil wealth translates into tangible benefits for its citizens.
“The current trajectory is unsustainable and calls for a comprehensive approach to address the underlying issues plaguing the sector, including governance, accountability, and investment in infrastructure. Without such changes, the prospects for a more stable and prosperous future for Nigeria’s oil industry remain bleak.
“The significant financial resources allocated to turnaround maintenance in the oil sector have not produced any tangible results, leading to growing concerns regarding the allocation of funds generated from previous increases in petrol prices. This situation raises critical questions about the effectiveness and transparency of the current administration’s management of the oil sector.
“Specifically, what measures has the Tinubu administration put in place to combat corruption and theft within this vital industry? Furthermore, has there been any noticeable reduction in the cost of governance, which could potentially free up resources for more pressing needs?
“In addition to these concerns, it is imperative to inquire about the infrastructure projects that have been funded through the revenue generated from fuel price hikes. Are there roads, hospitals, or schools constructed or improved as a direct result of these increased revenues? The lack of visible improvements in public infrastructure raises further doubts about the government’s fiscal responsibility and commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
“Moreover, the economic conditions of the average citizen must be assessed. Has there been any improvement in their living standards since the Tinubu administration took office? The employment rate is another critical metric that warrants scrutiny; what has been the trend in job creation or loss since the administration’s inception? These inquiries are not merely academic; they demand urgent attention and action from the government.
“The widening gap between the living standards of political officeholders and the general populace is becoming increasingly pronounced, yet the government appears indifferent to the growing discontent among citizens. Instead of addressing the myriad economic challenges that have arisen, the administration has opted for superficial solutions, such as rice palliatives, which have only exacerbated issues of corruption and mismanagement.
“In light of these pressing concerns, CHRICED urges the government to take immediate and effective action to tackle the fundamental causes of the current economic crisis. It is essential for the government and oil stakeholders to place the needs and well-being of the populace above external pressures and the interests of a select political elite. There is an urgent requirement for a thorough and inclusive economic strategy that truly seeks to mitigate the difficulties experienced by Nigerians.
“The era of empty promises and superficial reforms must come to an end. What is now required is a steadfast commitment to meaningful change that will restore hope and dignity to the lives of the people. The government must take decisive action to bridge the gap between the privileged few and the struggling masses, ensuring that the benefits of economic policies are equitably distributed and that the voices of the citizens are heard and respected. Only through such a commitment can the administration hope to regain the trust of the populace and foster a sense of belonging”.
Ifa Devotees Tie Nigeria’s Economic Woes To Foreign Culture Of Greed

          Mohammed Shosanya
The President, International Council For Ifa Religion, Chief Dr. Fayemi Fatunde Fakayode, says present economic crisis bedeviling the country, emanated from the foreign culture of greed adopted  by Nigerians.
He said this in a special lecture titled “Foreign Culture In Yoruba Land: Its Negative Impacts On The Economy Of The Land,” delivered at the 2024’s celebration of Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide, which held at Ilaji Resorts, Akanran, Ibadan.
He noted that foreign cultures came into Nigeria and Yoruba land through the introduction of alien religions, which made compulsory for the people to also accept their language, dressing mode, socioeconomic style and behaviors while the Yorubas have been known for the Omoluabi ethos of hard work, contentment, trustworthiness, before the advent of foreign culture, which he said contaminated the early characters.
According to him, acquisition syndrome among political, religious and traditional leaders led to formulation of policies, laws and regulations as well as actions that have secluded the majority from actualizing their economic potentials while the few people in the corridors of power, continue to amass wealth, to the detriment of all, calling on all to go back to the old habit of Omoluabi, speak the truth and lead others with the fear of God.
He said, foreign culture is the alien traditions which are not indigenous to the Yoruba.
He added:”Among the alien cultures that are popular in our midst are those from the white and that of the Arab. Nowadays, foreign cultures are dominant in our land and the introduction of foreign culture to our land were due to the following factors which include the coming of Islam in the 14th century and the British occupation of the 19th century.
“When we are talking about Yoruba people, the term ‘Omoluabi’ keeps surfacing. It is obvious that one of the names that the race was known for before being christened ‘Yoruba’ is Omoluabi. Unfortunately today, many Yoruba do not understand the meaning of the word Omoluabi because of the controversy surrounding the etymology of the term; some previous writers said it is the offspring of a man known as ‘Noah’ that are referred to as Omoluabi. While those who believe in such explanation are proud of it, those who know better will be chuckling.
“This is a serious issue because it is another way of subjugating Yoruba people, it is meant to turn the landlord to a tenant and turning aboriginals to strangers. The truth is that Omoluabi is used to refer to a child of Olu-Iwa, the one who takes after Olu-Iwa, that behaves like Olu-Iwa or followers of Olu-Iwa.
“Who is Olu-Iwa? Among the Divinities (Orisas), he is no other person than Ọ̀rúnmìlà. Whoever is of good character and patience like Orunmila is called ‘Abiwapele Omo Orunmila (one with gentle character like Ọ̀rúnmìlà).
“Omoluabi attitude shows good behavior with perseverance and patience, not greedy, fraudulent, selfish, proud and violent, which are traceable attitudes of the white and Arabians.
“Today, bad habits like lying, stealing, political and economic conspiracies, and human killing have trampled good habits to death in our politicians, leaders of thought, religious leaders and youths and the consequences are reflected in the economy. Farmers cannot harvest their farms without paying ransom to kidnappers while governments and security agencies collaborate or look the other way.
“For our economy to overcome all the challenges, we need to do away with foreign culture which has taken away good morals, so that we all become Omoluabi”

“I want to say that the true heroes are the aspirants. I beg you in the name of God. This is actually the President’s election.  Make them (aggrieved aspirants) relevant, integrate them. This reconciliation continues after the election because, the PDP doesn’t have a candidate, after the election, he (Agboola Ajayi) is still coming back” Bamidele said.
Also speaking, one of the aggrieved  aspirants, Chief Olusola Oke, SAN, assured that all the 16 aspirants have agreed to work for Governor Lucky  Aiyedatiwa to ensure that the opposition party does not take over the state.
He said: “All the 16 aspirants have resolved to settle and agree to work with the candidate of our party. We believe that we should not allow the state to slip into opposition.”

Ondo Guber:Why REC Must Be Redeployed-PDP

       Mohammed Shosanya
The Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has written an open to the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, seeking the redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Ondo State,Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola.
The State’s Secretary of the party,Oluseye Olujimi Esq,signed the letter and gave reasons Babalola must not supervise the upcoming governorship election in Ondo.
The letter dated Friday, October 18, 2024,punctured a response to the request for the removal of the REC credited to the Prof. Yakubu, which says the REC’s selection to conduct the forthcoming election does not contravene the dictate of the constitution.
The letter reads: “For the umpteenth time, we are calling on you, to as a matter of urgency, replace the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Toyin Babalola, appointed and posted to Ondo State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under your authority, with a non-partisan official with no previous association with Ondo State.
“We also counsel that you view this request with the seriousness and urgency it deserves for the preservation of our nation’s very fragile democracy and the restoration of Public confidence in your Commission’s integrity.
“It has become expedient, that you act positively on the content of this letter, following a statement credited to your Commission on Tuesday 15, October 2024, in direct reaction to the call by the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, that the Ondo REC should be replaced.
“Governor Seyi Makinde’s warning that the PDP will continue to protest until its request is met, should not be taken as an empty threat.
“Moreso, since it is on record, that the Governor’s call of Tuesday, was not the first time the Party had made such a request.
“Our Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had earlier mentioned to you in a previous letter to your office, that the Ondo State Commissioner, Mrs. Toyin Babalola is not morally and reasonably fit to supervise the gubernatorial election fixed for November 16.
“This is on account of the very likelihood of compromise, as it has come to light that the REC, is a bonafide resident of Ondo State with her family permanently domiciled at No. 3 Majekodunmi Street, Ijoka Area of Akure Town, in Akure South. She remains therefore an established resident of Ondo State.
“Quite unfortunately, however, a statement credited to you on Tuesday, said the REC would not be removed because she is not from the State, even though you refused to mention her State of origin. A diligent check on the background of the REC would have revealed to you that, not only did she grow up in Ondo State, but that she currently also lives in her parents house which is No. 3 Majekodunmi Street, Ijoka Area, Akure Town, the State Capital.
“Even if she were not of Ondo State origin by birth, the constitution of  Nigeria makes it quite clear, that anyone who has lived in a particular place for a period of ten years, statutorily qualifies for recognition as an indigene.
“Chairman Sir, it is obvious that your office did not do a diligent check before issuing that unfortunate statement.
“That unfortunate omission on your part, sadly gives the impression that INEC cares less, should the issue of the REC’s residency status and dubious integrity result in avoidable controversies and/or crises, that may fall out from any unwitting act of replicating in the upcoming Ondo State election, the controversial APC template so ignominiously used in the recent Edo State gubernatorial election, the dust from which is yet to settle.
“Moreover, apart from being a member of Akure Town in particular, and Ondo State Community in general, which disqualifies her from the Ondo REC job; going by the rule of engagement of your Commission, it has also been established that the REC, has all along been holding nocturnal meetings with the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the forthcoming election, in the person of the incumbent Governor of the State, H.E. Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
“Such an unfortunate scenario leaves us wondering and asking: What is going to be the fate of the other contestants under such most disproportionately skewed circumstances? The above have put to question, the REC’s neutrality in the upcoming election, where the umpire is expectedly should be absolutely unbiased and non partisan. Related to this is the condonement of the APC agents and collaboration of INEC Ad-hoc Staff in the ongoing collection of the voters cards, where details of voters are written out by or for the APC.
“Certainly, all the facts deposed above, cannot but call to question the Ondo State REC’s neutrality in the upcoming election; where as the umpire, she is expected to be absolutely unbiased and non-partisan.
“The unwholesome scenario now unfolding in Ondo State, may further put a question mark on the integrity of your Commission, which integrity became even more questionable, following the controversial election held in Edo State recently.
“Mr Chairman, you may wish to know also, that the controversial Edo State election, has already charged up the atmosphere here in Ondo State ahead of the November 16 election.
“Hence, the rational thing for an unbiased umpire to do, would have been to use the Ondo election, as an opportunity to begin to work at gradually regaining voters’ confidence as well as restoring INEC’s lost integrity.
“Replacing the Ondo REC should not be a change too difficult for you to effect, if you sincerely, genuinely and intentionally care about restoring the faith of democracy-loving Nigerians in your organisation INEC.
“At this juncture, we would like to plead with you, to use the authority of your exalted office, to prevent whatever acts of commission or omission that could lead to anarchy and major threats to communal peace, or worse still, unhealthy political developments capable of derailing the country’s nascent democracy.
“Unarguably, it is only by handling the Ondo election in the most professional manner, in accordance with global best practices, devoid of any trace of preferential treatment or concealment of any kind to favour any of the contestants and their parties, that your organisation can claim to have done commendably.
“The first available opportunity to do this, and certainly a low-hanging achievement fruit at that, is to conduct a credible, fair and near-perfect, if not perfect election, in Ondo state come November 16.
“To achieve this, is to come clean with transparent preparations ahead of the election.
“The first step to demonstrate this, must be to redeploy Mrs. Toyin Babalola as the REC from Ondo State, and replace her with a non-partisan REC, whose open transparency and unquestionable neutrality, will no doubt greatly help to reassure and motivate voters in Ondo State, in the build-up to the November election.
“For the purpose of emphasis again, Mrs. Toyin Babalola, Ondo State REC, is not by any means qualified to be an umpire in the upcoming Gubernatorial election in Ondo State, because she has been residing in Ondo State for more than three decades now, even up till this moment, with her parents and siblings at House Number 3, Majekodunmi Street, Ijoka Area of Akure Town.
“In like manner, all her educational and career pursuits had emanated from her Ondo State permanent address in Akure. Furthermore, and this is even more damaging, she has been having serious links with the APC government cum its gubernatorial candidate in the upcoming November election in Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Rumbling . . .Of That Night At The Toll Gate Plaza

       Emiko Aruofor
The beats went on for days unending
The pizzas, the dancing and the megaphones
The passion was thick as steaming pap
And for the first time since June the twelfth
The Mainland and the Island too
Shared air, held hands and met eyes
Brother, where have you been
While I’ve lived my life to date.
Sister, you come across as butter,
But, you sure know to roll to the beat.
From Bariga to Banana, a common line
The cane that blanlah the wife inicio
Has come off the wardrobe top
And iyawo’s eyes are cloudy and red.
So, they gathered, thousand, upon thousand
To cry out loud to see an end
To the menace in starched khaki
Throttling down on blooming hearts
That none could breathe without
The constant SAR of air expired
The talks went on in fiery tomes
Heads bow down, knees aground
Voices raised in one lament.
The spirits bent and ground by the
Unyielding yokes and shackles
Of years gone by, would either
Crack and split asunder
Or make a stand and end it here
As real and true it’s all for certain
The best of wishes don’t horses make
Without a hint of a night foreboding
Darkness dimmed upon the waste
The frenzied tempos and waving arms
Gave way to yield to marching feet
And the drilled staccatos of glinting barrels
Sent to turn the reign of future kings
To crimson crowns soon embedded
In the freshly drenched tarmac
Of a road heading nowhere but hades.
If there were echoes of a revolution looming
The deep, heated breathe of hell descended
Gave way to fragments of shattered somnolence
As the grey curtains parted to a dawn
Of stunted dreams and shuttered speech
The hallowed grounds that heaved with hope
Now gave testament to shuddering tales
Whispered in the parable of scattered shoes and splattered shirts
Of lost bangles and that single earring
Haunting memories of souls gone
We know not where
