Light-Up Oyo Project Returns In Three Weeks-Makinde

Mohamed Shosanya

Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde,Friday, said the Light-Up Oyo Project will return in three weeks.

The government had recently frowned at the project’s infrastructure specification, adding that it was presently auditing the entire infrastructure to determine the level and quality of work done.

The return of the project will also be backed with more expansion to add value to the lives of the citizens of the state,Makinde said at the flag off of the dualisation of the 8.3km Akobo-Ojurin-Odogbo Barracks-Olorunda-Abaa junction Road.

He said: “Let me also use this opportunity to update you on the Light-Up Oyo project. We know this project is one of the ways we are ensuring economic security for our people because when the lights are on, our people are able to stay outside longer and carry out economic activities. As promised, we carried out the audit and we have reached an alignment with the contractors. So, I assure you that in the next two to three weeks, all the lights will be back on and then we will continue to expand the project.”

He also announced palliatives to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal on the citizens of the state.

He said: “We know that things are getting harder because the subsidy on PMS has been removed and this has made transportation cost increase further. Well, I have already set up a committee to look into what we can do about increasing civil servants’ salaries but I know that everyone in Oyo State is not a civil servant. So, we have decided to deploy more Omituntun buses to ease the transportation worries. I have also directed that there should be no increase in the fare paid on these buses.

“Also, school children and our senior citizens will board these buses at half-price. We will continue to look into other ways of easing the burdens.”

Speaking on the road project,he said the flag off was the fulfillment of a promise he made to the people of the area during his campaign.

He said, “Today, we are keeping our promise by flagging off the construction. You can see that the work has already started. The equipment is here and the contractor has promised that it will be completed in 12 months. From today, we are counting 12 months. We have paid 30 per cent to the contractor and we expect that the work will progress.

“I had wanted to just fix the road as a single lane but I know that with the rate at which this axis is developing, dualizing the road is the best. So, that was how we decided to bite the bullet and dualize it once and for all.”

He solicited the cooperation of the people since the dualisation of the road would necessarily result in some houses having to give way to the road. He, however, promised that compensation to affected people would be prompt.

Lift Ban On Sales Of Fuel In Communities, Ogun Border Residents Beg Tinubu

Musbau Babatunde

Youths in Ipokia Local Government area of Ogun State have implored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to lift the ban on the sales of petroleum products within 20Kilometers of the international borders.

The Secretary, Ipokia Local Government Youth Forum, Adeyemi Sulaimon Olusegun, who made the appeal in a statement, lamented that only four petrol stations are allowed to sell petrol to a population of over 700,000 people in Ipokia.

They reasoned that federal government must lift the ban since subsidy on fuel had been removed with a view to easing the hardship on the residents of border communities.

They expressed concerns that many communities in the border area had been cut off from power supply for the past 15 years, making it impossible for businesses to survival due to inability of residents to buy fuel.

The group added: “We see it as a matter of urgency that we need to call your attention to the agonies and difficulties we have been experiencing from time immemorial of your predecessor former President, Muhammadu Buhari over 20KM suspension of PMS supply to border communities; which Idiroko border is not left out.

“Imperatively, as a beau monde of our world; we understand the goal of this policy. It was targeted at the smuggling of our subsidized PMS to our neighbouring countries and this was firmly achieved but the common man is still dealing with its reverberation.

“It would interest you to know that only four fueling stations were approved to operate in Ipokia Local government because of our continuous agitation and meeting with the necessary stakeholders, this is a LGA with a population of over 700,000 dwellers.

“Most inhabitants have to travel as far as 20 km to get fuel to run their respective businesses, farm machinery, clinics/hospitals and daily domestic uses. This had subjected us to undue hardship for almost five years, and still counting.

“Alas, this is a Local Government Area that had been cut off from the power supply for over 15 years as we solely depend on PMS to go about our daily lives and businesses.

“We lack all forms of social amenities without no hope in sight. Our economy had crumbled as most artisans and businessmen/women had deserted our communities to continue their daily lives elsewhere, as there’s no power supply and yet again, they couldn’t get fuel for their daily businesses; those that could get fuel are getting it at an exorbitant price in our localities, as it had turned to a very scarce commodity.

“We have put several efforts in place with the past administration to ease this sting of Federal Government policy on our people but it all fell on deaf ears. We sincerely do know that you’re a crackerjack economically-oriented leader that understands how all of this works.

“Ipokia Local Government Youth Forum and the good people of Ipokia Local Government solemnly do plead with you to use your good office to lift this suspension since subsidy which had been a cankerworm that had eaten deeply into our economy as a country had been relinquished.

“We think it’s no longer important that this policy should continue. It’s no longer news that the subsidy removal is leaving a tough time for Nigerians at the moment but our case is different because we’re experiencing twice the effect of the subsidy removal due to the 20KM PMS supply suspension axed on us.”

Nigeria: All On Supports 25 Mini-grid Projects With $11m

Mohamed Shosanya

Shell funded impact investment company, All On, through its Demand Aggregation for Renewable Technologies (DART) program, has announced its commitment of $11 million
to support 25 mini-grid projects in Nigeria.

This was disclosed at an inaugural DART workshop with off-grid developers, commercial banks, domestic investors, and other critical stakeholders to discuss strategies to unlock local currency
commercial funding for the off-grid renewable energy sector in Nigeria.

Speaking, Caroline Eboumbou, CEO of All On, highlighted the remarkable success achieved through the DART program since its launch in 2021.

She explained that the program has committed a total of $11 million to support 25 mini-grid projects across the country, over 2,700 solar energy systems to be
funded, and 12 successful applications thus far.

She said efforts have been made to increase the funding of the facility by $15 million, in collaboration with its partner, Global Energy for People and Planet (GEAPP). These efforts aim to address the local financing
bottlenecks experienced by developers and ensure that affordable, high-quality solar products reach the communities most in need in Nigeria.

“While celebrating these achievements, we also acknowledge that challenges have arisen along the way. In collaboration with our partners at GEAPP, we are actively working to address these challenges. We have
made significant progress in simplifying the application process and reducing the timelines from application to disbursement. Additionally, we have expanded the eligibility scope to include Solar Energy Systems, Standalone Systems for Productive Use (SSPU), and Commercial and Industrial (C&I) developers,”
she said.

Last November, All On, in partnership with GEAPP set up the DART program, a $10 million financing lfacility designed to accelerate the growth of the renewable energy sector in Nigeria and beyond. It achieves this through a combination of demand pooling, aggregated purchasing of solar equipment, access to affordable finance, and streamlined logistics processes.

By leveraging economies of scale, the
DART program aims to reduce costs for solar companies and end users while promoting the adoption of renewable energy.

Explaining reason DART program is crucial for the renewable energy ecosystem in Nigeria, “firstly, it allows small-scale developers to benefit from group purchasing, resulting in lower unit costs for solar equipment.
Secondly, it addresses the issue of foreign exchange availability, alleviating the foreign exchange bottlenecks experienced by developers.”

“Moreover, the program offers additional benefits such as a streamlined procurement process, expedited deployment of off-grid assets, access to affordable financing for developers, and the potential for result-based subsidies and other commercial financing options.” – said Caroline Eboumbou, All On CEO

The workshop encompassed a series of presentations addressing key aspects of Nigeria’s macroeconomic climate and its impact on the renewable energy industry within the country. Topics covered included the sector’s roadmap, challenges faced, and a plenary session that focused on strategies for unlocking local commercial financing.

Tinubu Moves To Reverse IoCs Divestment

Mohammed Shosanya

President Bola Tinubu has promised to secure robust collaboration with Exxon Mobil and other oil majors in Nigeria.

The development was in line with his government’s commitment to strike major oil and gas deals at the early stages of his administration and boost Nigeria’s hydrocarbon industry

He spoke when he hosted Mr. Liam Mallon, President of ExxonMobil Upstream Company, and Mrs. Adesua Dozie, Executive Director and General Counsel, Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, (MPNU), in Abuja on Thursday.

He explained that the meeting marked the continuation of this administration’s efforts to secure the collaboration of critical players in the oil industry towards ensuring stability, transparency, and fair competition in the sector.

Speaking at a recent dialogue with directors of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and other business leaders, during his presidential campaign in Lagos, had disclosed that the ExxonMobil has no business going to go to Guyana for gas production when it already has sufficient capacity in Nigeria.

Tinubu said, instead of having to dig the ground and build a city, in Guyana, “You (ExxonMobil) have some infrastructure to some extent here in Nigeria, why not negotiate with the Nigerian Government, give us some of the full benefit areas, that Nigeria wants.

“I would rather have 40 percent and you take 60 percent if, in the long run, they would provide the necessary incentive and the revenue that I need for accelerated growth and recovery. Let’s take it, if you want to make an omelette you have to break the eggs,” Tinubu stated during his campaign.

He also at the NESG dialogue said, ” We shall work in a coordinated manner to implement key reforms in the energy sector and collaborate to stem oil theft and vandalization of fuel infrastructure to tap the current high oil prices,”

EKEDC: Court Sentences 90 Vandals In 6months

Mohamed Shosanya

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company,EKEDC,says over 90 vandals it apprehended in the first half of the year have been sentenced by the courts to different jail terms.

Dr. Tinuade Sanda, Managing Director, EKEDC made this known during the periodic customer engagement forum held at the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) Centre in Lagos.

Sanda, who was represented by Mrs Rekhiat Momoh, Chief Commercial Officer at EKEDC, disclosed that the frequent cases of vandalism of power infrastructure especially in Lagos Central Senatorial district have continued to place a heavy burden on the operational cost and balance sheets of the power company.

She added:” The spate of vandalism has been on the increase in Orile, Apapa, Ijora, and Mushin axis. We are losing too much in terms of collections. This is becoming a huge financial burden running into millions of Naira. These are funds that should have been used to expand our network infrastructure.

She stated that the distribution transformers (DTs) are a major infrastructure commonly vandalized by criminals in the axis.

She said, “For instance, we spend an average of N1 million to replace four electrical cables when they are completely removed and stolen from a transformer. We record cases of transformer vandalism and other related issues on a weekly basis in these particular areas.

Speaking on the concerns over the failure of EKEDC to energize some transformers bought by the customers, Momoh stated that most times the delay is caused by the unavailability of sufficient resources to procure the accessories needed to energize the transformers.

She said the cost of accessories for installing distribution transformers is often higher than the price of the transformer. It, therefore, costs us more to get these accessories.

“There is also a regulatory provision that makes it compulsory for the DisCo to undertake a business justification process on a community seeking to relieve transformers from the Discos.

“When bills are settled, the burden of the huge financial outlay entailed in providing transformers is reduced and such communities can be energised. For instance, if EKEDC is collecting about 99 percent of the billings in such a community, we will hastily install DT in the area.

“For any transformer that needs relief or needs to be replaced, the customers should ensure to update the payment of their bills by ensuring that they are up to date,” the EKEDC’s CCO said.

Speaking on some of the successes that have been achieved since the last engagement with the customers in Orile District, Momoh said, quite a lot of things have changed since the last time we met, especially in terms of the metering of customers and promptness in response to downtime.

“We need the customers to keep paying their bills and ensure that they collaborate with us in the area of reducing the spate of prepaid meter bypass and vandalism in the district,” she said.

She emphasized that a minimum of 7000 prepaid meters are installed across all the franchise areas on a monthly basis. She added that EKEDC , as a leading DisCo in the country in terms of number of customers that have been metered, is also committed to closing the metering gaps.

Speaking,Chief Akeem Ojora, Bashorun of Iganmu kingdom, a representative of the paramount ruler of Ijora and Orile Iganmu Kingdom, in his remark during the forum said that the electricity customers and EKEDC need to work together to address power supply challenges in the district.

He said:“Whenever there are challenges over the inadequate supply of electricity, customers should avoid taking laws into their hands by vandalising, attacking, and harassing officials of the DisCo. These are men doing their legitimate works, they have families and are our brothers and sisters.

“Customers should learn to register their concerns through the appropriate channels including reaching out to the management of the DisCo.

“The distribution infrastructures are our collective responsibilities, and the palace of the Ojora, Chiefs, and offices of the CDAs are also opened for aggrieved customers to obtain justice for all the issues concerning the supply of electricity.

He also implored President Bola Tinubu to urgently ensure that Nigerians enjoy the benefit of his government by focusing on the power sector.

He further charged President Bola Tinubu focus on improving the power sector under his administration. He also charged the new government to collaborate with the DisCos and other critical players in the NESI by ensuring the formulation of policies and support required to improve their performances.

He added that the power sector reform is fundamental to improvement of the country’s economy as well as upscaling the general wellbeing of all Nigerians.

Alh. Razak Olaogun, President of Community Development Committee (CDC) Coker Aguda, while commending EKEDC for improved power supply in the district, emphasised that the management of the DisCo needs to do more in the area of increasing the number of houses that are installed with prepaid meters.

He said: “The DisCos are the closest Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry(NESI) players to the customers, because most of us don’t understand the roles of the Transmission Company of Nigeria(TCN), Generation Companies(GenCos) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Authority (NERC).

“The removal of subsidy on petrol has again reaffirmed the roles of national grid to all electricity customers. This is because the expensive pump prices of petrol has made electricity from the grid cheaper. So, customers do not have a cheaper choice to make than to partner with DisCo for the supply of electricity.

“Customers and EKEDC are partners in such a time like this. This partnership must be strengthened to ensure that optimal satisfaction is enjoyed by all parties. It is therefore mandatory for EKEDC to focus more on investing in its infrastructure and guaranteeing improved power supply to the customers,” the Coker Aguda CDC President said.

Babatunde Lasaki EKEDC General Manager, Corporate Communications and Strategy.charged customers in Orile District to take advantage of all the EKEDC’s communication channels to address their concerns.

This will ensure that the customer-service providers’ working relationship is improved to the highest level.

He said:“We are here to serve you. If we are doing well, tell others who do not know about that. If we are not satisfying you enough, ensure that you hastily reach out to us, in order to address all the issues. We are a reputable and reliable partner committed to boosting our service delivery to our customers.
