Gangs Of Lagos: Isale Eko Descendants’ Union Kicks, Seeks Withdrawal Of Movie

The Isale Eko Descendants’ Union (IDU) have petitioned the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) over alleged defamation of their community and Eyo masquerade in the Gangs of Lagos film.

The union’s Chairman, Mr Yomi Tokosi, who conveyed this in a statement, said Gangs of Lagos, portrayed the Isale Eko community and Eyo in the bad light of platforms for criminal activities.

It expressed displeasure that Isale Eko was painted as a crime hub in the film directed by Jadesola Osiberu, and co-produced by Kemi Akindoju, adding that it brought the indigenes into blatant shame.

It said:“The attention of the Isale Eko Descendants’ Union (IDU) has been drawn to the very disturbing violent images in a new movie directed by Jade Osiberu and Kemi Lala Akindoju, executive produced by Adesegun Adetoro, Demi Olubanwo, Olumide Soyombo, Bankole Wellington, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, and Kola Aina; and filmed by Greoh Studios, and released by Amazon’s Prime Video Nigeria called gangs of Lagos.

“In the movie, the unique Eyo masquerade indigenous to the Isale Eko community in Lagos was illegally and scandalously depicted as being used as a camouflage, decoy and subterfuge for murderers and gangsters operating in the Isale Eko area.”

The union emphasized that Eyo has been the exclusive cultural legacy of the indigenous Lagosians for close to 170 years, thus slamming Gangs of Lagos and its owners for viewing it in a “despicable and insensitive manner.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Eyo masquerade has been part of the unique cultural heritage of the Isale Eko community of Lagos since 1854 (169 years) and the Eyo is known as a masquerade for celebration in Lagos island and not an instrument of gangs of criminals as illegally and scandalously portrayed.

“Most importantly, the movie has brought the Eyo masquerade and the people of Isale Eko into disrepute, who are now deemed criminally minded in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society.

“The Isale Eko descendants’ union is very disturbed that the culture and tradition of Isale Eko can be wantonly exploited in such a despicable and insensitive manner by Amazon Prime Video to the detriment of the Isale Eko community.

“The illegal and scandalous depiction of the Eyo masquerade in the movie is actionable and a petition has been lodged by the IDU with the National Film and Video Censors Board (NF&VCB) including other major stakeholders.

“The IDU has among other things requested that the NF&VCB withdraw the approval granted to the movie- Gangs of Lagos and direct the withdrawal of the movie from all viewing channels available to the public. The IDU and other community stakeholders will also be considering legal action for the damage done to the culture, tradition and image of the Isale Eko community and the Eyo masquerade.”

Ojikutu: I Will Cease To Be Nigerian Citizen If Tinubu Is Sworn-In As President

Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, says she will renounce her citizenship of Nigeria once Aswijau Bola Tinubu is sworn in as President.

Her lawyers have commenced work on her decision ahead of May 29,she disclosed at a press conference on Wednesday.

Nigeria, she claims,is in a deplorable state and doesn’t need a President with baggage to start managing its affairs at this critical time.

She alleged that her safety is no longer guaranteed and that if anything happens to her, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the President-elect should be held responsible.

She also alleged that part of the grouse Tinubu had against her was her insistence that Lagos needed to be developed and also because she aspired to be governor of Lagos State.

Ojikutu further alleged that those things didn’t go down well with Tinubu and he had on many occasions humiliated her publicly and even ordered that her land documents be revoked.

She spoke on the 2023 general elections, saying:“Nigeria is in a hopeless situation and when I heard Peter Obi speaking, I had no choice but to support him. Again I am one of those who believe that it is time for the South-East to get the presidency. If we say we want to remain one Nigeria, then we have to take equity into consideration.

“You cannot say that you are one Nigeria and you are suppressing a particular region. You don’t want them to get the presidency shot. If you don’t want them as number one let them go. If you don’t want them to go, then give them the chance to be number one.

“Obi came out and said things that appealed to the youths. He said he would take care of the wastages that are not letting the nation to develop. Many of us fell in love with what he said”.

How Obi Was Detained In London Over Alleged Self Impersonation

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, was reportedly detained at the Heathrow Airport, London, on Good Friday,April 7,over alleged self impersonation.

Obi-Datti Media team said in a statement that Obi arrived the Heathrow Airport in London from Nigeria on Good Friday, April 7, 2023, and joined the queue for the necessary Airport protocols when he was accosted by immigration official who handed him a detention note and told him to step aside.

He was questioned for a long time and it was very strange for a man who lived for over a decade in that country, the statement said.

It added the former Anambra State governor was questioned for “duplication offense meaning that someone has been impersonating him in London”.

The statement also disclosed that like the faces of other Obidients, the LP’s presidential hopeful’s face was already an “international frame for Nigerians, Africans home, and in Diaspora who are likely to be Obidients”.

According to the statement, the ordeal it said however did not last for long as immigration officials were taken aback at the spontaneous reaction of Nigerians at Airport.

It said:”The high implication of the offense is that the impersonator could be committing all kinds of weighty crimes and other dubious acts and it would be recorded in Obi’s name.

“Since the impersonator is still at large, the scenario is unimaginable as Obi could be implicated in a series of forbidden acts and even be framed in a manner that could be a huge embarrassment to him, his family, his party, the Obidient Movement, and indeed Nigeria, where he currently and indisputably remains the conscience of the people.

“Obi-Datti Media office recalls that our principal has been under all kinds of attack, since the February 25th, 2023 Presidential election in which as the standard bearer of the Labour Party he put up an outstanding showing coming third out of 18 contestants as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, even though his supporters and many other election watchers including international observers believe very strongly that he won the election but was manipulated out.

“Since he was told to go to court if he feels strongly about the election which all international monitors chorused were flawed and full of imperfections and he accepted, there have been severe attacks on him from all corners.

“Even the Federal Government who directed him to go to court even despatched the Minister of Information Lai Mohammad to the United States to attempt to de-market him and accused him of treason.

“Obi’s telephone line was also bugged when they were possibly looking for information to portray him badly before a section of the country who had voted for him massively.

“As if they were not getting the desired results of denting his image, and possibly placing the traducers under a heavier conscience load, they tried to persuade him to leave the country and go take a rest. It’s also not impossible that those urging him to leave the country may have planted the impersonators ostensibly to tar the Eagle’s immaculate appearance.

“The Obi-Datti Media office would like to therefore assure all persons of goodwill especially the Obidients that the Rock is not deterred as he is ready to suffer the pain and remain even more determined to pursue whichever path his creator destined for him in Nigeria.

“Finally, let it be known that In the face of the flurry of unwarranted attacks and cogs being placed in the wheel of rescuing our dear country, Obi strongly believes that a new Nigeria is possible where the people will be able to live in a secure and productive country they will all be proud to own”
