Fuel Scarcity: Fish Out Marketers Sabotaging Nigeria,Reps Beg Security Agencies

The House of Representatives on Wednesday implored security agencies to fish out oil marketers and other economic saboteurs that may be responsible for the fuel scarcity across the country.

The House also urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited as a sole importer to urgently ease off these queues in service stations in the country.

The resolutions of the House was passed following a motion of urgent public importance on (Standing Order 8 Rule4) on a
“Need For The NNPC Limited And Other Regulators In The Petroleum Industry To End The Fuel Scarcity Across The County,” sponsored by Hon. Leke Abajide, (APC, Kogi).

Rep. Abajide, who moved the motion, noted that NNPC Limited is the only importer of premium motor spirit, popularly called petrol, in the country.

He stated that the National Assembly has approved the money for the subsidy on the petroleum products so as to mitigate against unforeseen circumstances in the areas of shortages of the product.

He said:”The House recalled that over three months, there has been persistent scarcity of PMS in many parts of the country and the situation appears to be getting worse.

“Aware that there are uneven pump prices being dispensed by the filling stations across the country which fields speculations that government may have begun to remove subsidy on petrol.

“Also aware that there is allegation of drop in petrol supply to marketers by private depots which is creating a dangerous mindset in the country.

The House maintained that the current fuel crisis across the country may worsen in the days ahead with the introduction of a N16.00 per liter charge.

He further explained that another contributing factor to the scarcity of the product may be unconnected with the increased cost of hiring daughter vessels in the hike in liter charges which hitherto were paid in Naira but now being charged in US Dollars.

He added:”The House is worried that the scarcity is associated with saboteurs among some of the key stakeholders who deliberately manipulated the system.Worried that due to the scarcity Nigerians are exposed to all sorts of hardships which has resulted in a hike in transportation fares and high cost of some major food items.

Adopting the motion, the House said that with the petrol scarcity Nigerians are not finding it easy in their day-to-day livelihood activities.

The House mandated the relevant House Committees to investigate the matter within 48 hours and report to the House.

FG Registers Uber, Bolt Drivers,Logistic Companies As Trade Union

The federal government, has presented a letter of approval of registration to an informal sector trade union, the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria (AUATWON).

Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige made the presentation at a ceremony in his office, according to a statement issued by Olajide Oshundun
Head, Press and Public Relations,
Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The membership of the new union comprises all app-based transport workers, online transport services, and e-hailing drivers and operators in Nigeria.

Speaking,Ngige described the registration of the new union as a milestone in labour administration, particularly in the trade union services segment.

The development marks a continued global journey to formalize the informal sector, which constitute the larger population in the world of work,he said.

He noted that prior to now, the informal sector had been unmanageable, owing to lack of identifiable structural framework to harmonize and demarcate its diverse sectors.

He said:“Hitherto, we gave recognition and certification to workers in the formal sector, including the private sector, such as banks, oil and gas, insurance, among other technical areas, and the public sector workers in the unions of pensioners, teachers and recently, the two newly registered university based unions, the Congress for University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA).

“Today, we are breaking new ground with those in the informal sector who are employing themselves and from there, employing others. The promoters of AUATWON applied for registration as a trade union on April 27, 2021 to cater for self-employed persons in the field of IT-based transportation services.

“We considered necessary factors and perimeters, especially the global move, which is sponsored mostly by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to formalise the informal sector that has most of the working population in the world of work, characterised and independent owned-account workers.

“In our case today, we have a hybrid of the forgone in the informal economy who own and operate economic units which may also further include employers, and members of cooperatives and of social and solidarity economy units.”

He said in view of these considerations, his ministry decided to register AUATWON to enable the organisation of the new but growing segment of the informal economy.

Besides, the creation of jobs, he said the registration of the union would enable the government to monitor the security component of transportation systems in Nigeria.

“We are also backed by international position on the unionization of workers who are self employed. The need to ensure that such workers enjoy trade union rights for the purpose of furthering and defending their interest, which includes collective bargaining, has often been emphasized in different fora, concerning the world of work.

“But for the self-employed, it is a different kind of collective bargaining, tailored to suit the peculiarities of the self-employed segment of workers, and the collective bargaining mechanism may transverse international shores of Nigeria, as such apps are usually foreign owned and operated.”

He urged the union to observe the provisions of Section 3 of the Trade Disputes Act, CAP.T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN), 2004, which demands that they should deposit copies of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) with the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment.

He charged them to also discharge their obligations under the Trade Unions Act, CAP T14, LFN, 2004, such as the rendition of annual returns to the Registrar of Trade Unions.

“The office of the Registrar of Trade Unions (RTU) will gazette your organisation in consonance with Sections 5(2) and (3) of the Trade Unions Act, and 90 days will be given for those who want to object to your existence. We will look at each petition on its merit and the RTU will write a recommendation. Afterwards, we will invite you to give you the certificate of registration to operate as a full-fledged trade union.”

The President of AUATWON, Dr Adedaramola Adeniran, commended the minister for the registration of his union to protect the interest of their members who belong to the informal economy.

He described the registration of the union as a step towards achievement of decent work practices in the Nigerian informal sector, especially in the area of social dialogue by the establishment of union to represent the needs of workers in the app-based transportation sector.

He assured that they will work and collaborate with important stakeholders including government, app-companies, both local and international organisations that will provide welfare for their members, among others.

2023: Pray, Vote Responsible Leaders, Reverend Ajayi Advises Christians

Founder of the Love of Christ Generation Church, Reverend Esther Ajayi, also known as Iya Adura, has urged Christians to back their prayers with action by exercising their civic duties and voting to install their preferred leaders in the forthcoming general elections.

She spoke while fielding questions from journalists at an event recently.

Rev Ajayi said: “My advice to Nigerians is to look at this card I’m holding, this is my PVC. It is your power. I wanted to talk to my people about it today but that didn’t happen because I had to come here. It’s my agenda for our meeting next week.”Again, she added, “the PVC is your power, don’t lose it. Go and vote. That’s the only way you can change whoever is leading. At least your conscience tells you that you’ve got to vote. So, go and vote!”

She didn’t disparage the importance of prayers but emphasized that prayers alone won’t cut it as there is a part of prayers that must be executed by the individual praying.

“Prayer will help you. Prayer is important, but when you carry out the practical aspect of prayer it enhances the prayer, and makes it go straight to God,” she said.

In a separate incident, she hinted on how Nigerians could navigate the year 2023 successfully in a press release as she welcomes the body of Christ to what she termed “2023: the Year of Possessing My Possessions.”

In part, the statement admonished Christians to be more graceful, and more loving.

Quoting sections of the Holy Bible, which preaches love as the principal virtue, the cleric implored Christians to develop and nurture relationships in line with the deed of Jesus Christ.

“Yes, one must be mindful of acquaintances with ulterior motives, but as much as possible have peace with all men. There is a place for healthy interpersonal relationship. That’s what Hebrews 12:14 tells us.That is the counsel of God, and the benefits are not just personal. It goes a long way,” she added.

Ajayi, who said globally, times are hard, advised Christians to stay prayerful and try to improve on their approach to evolving innovations and technologies.

She added:“Times are changing fast, and unemployment rate is increasing. Even well-educated people are finding it difficult to get jobs, and this puts extra strains on families. But with prayers and the right attitude to emerging fields and current technologies, I’m sure Nigerians will have better chances in 2023”

Fuel Scarcity, Naira Redesign Designed To Scuttle 2023 General Elections, Tinubu Alleges

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Wednesday alleged that the current fuel scarcity and naira redesign in the country are designed to scuttle the 2023 general elections.

Tinubu spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during the APC presidential campaign rally at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, where he also vowed that Nigerians will defy all odds to cast their votes, adding that the 2023 election would be a revolution.

“They don’t want this election to hold. They want to scuttle it. Will you allow them?”, Tinubu asked the teeming supporters at the rally. They have started coming up with the issue of ‘no fuel’. Don’t worry, if there is no fuel, we will trek to cast the vote. If you like increase pump price of fuel, hide the fuel or change the ink on the naira notes, we will win the election.

“We will use PVCs to take over government from them, if they like, let them say is no fuel, we will trek there. They are full of mischiefs, they can say there is no fuel, they have started talking about fuel scarcity, forget about it, be rest assured. I, Asiwaju will end fuel scarcity.

“Let the price of fuel continue to soar, they are the ones that know where they are hoarding it. You’re hoarding the naira notes, they are hoarding fuel, we will vote and we will win.If you like change the ink in the naira note, you can spend lavishly and become a debtor, you will be shocked, we win the election, the opposition (the umbrella party) will be defeated.

“I’m a youth, I’m here for you and you will not be put to shame. We will take over the government from them, they are traitors that want to wrestle the government from us, they have never done it before.”

“This is a revolution; this election is a revolution. They are being cunny, they are jokes. When there’s nothing to say, they are creating artificial fuel scarcity, they are saying pump price will increase to N200, N500 but let your mind be at rest, we will end fuel scarcity, we will end fuel crisis.

Tinubu reiterated his resolve for students’ loan, assuring that no student will be dropped out of the university because of money.

He said:“I am assuring you one thing, there will be student loan, nobody will drop out of the university because of school fees, I guarantee you that. Nobody will have to repeat one class for eight years and not graduate, we are too smart, we are brilliant, we are courageous, we are sharp, we will make four years course four years course. You agree, will you vote? Whether there is fuel or not”.

Cashew Exporters To Rake In $500m In 2023

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammad Mahood Abubarkar, has said that cashew export will fetch Nigerian farmers about $500million by 2023.

He stated this on Wednesday at the launch of Nigeria Cashew Day and Cashew Season flag-off ceremony with the theme:” Industrializing the Nigeria Cashew Sector through Inclusive Policies”.

He also disclosed that of the 250,000 mt of cashew nuts produced in Nigeria, only about 10% is processed.

The Minister, who was represented at the event by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, said at the end of 2022, cashew nuts exported from Nigeria generated over $250million (accounting for about 10% of the country’s agricultural export) and cashew export is expected to fetch Nigerian farmers about $500million by 2023.

He said:”I therefore, implore you to continue working together in harmony as this is the only way you can make positive impact towards sustainable development of the cashew industry and ensuring its contribution in achieving the overall goal of this Administration’s Economic Diversification Agenda.

“In Nigeria, cashew is increasing in its importance as an export oriented cash crop since in the 1990’s. It has become an important source of non-oil export earnings (estimated to represent over 10% GDP based on export data of 2022). It has become a commercial crop in Nigeria and is cultivated in 27 States of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“In realization of the importance of Cashew, the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development listed Cashew as a priority crop to be promoted under the Import Substitution Strategy of the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Cashew value chain is among the crops being promoted under the Value Chain Programme of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Ministry has carried out a number of activities over the years to promote the growth of the value chain in the country. These includes:distribution of improved seeds/seedlings to cashew farmers free of charge, establishment of cashew cottage industries in some states, distribution of agro-chemicals/growth enhancers, carbon free jute bags, knapsack sprayers, water pump to cashew farmers free of charge, conduct of capacity building/training, sensitization exercise, stakeholders meeting e.t.c.

“As a result of the above activities by Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, jobs were created along the value chain, income of farmers improved and our country’s foreign exchange earnings also improved. At the end of 2022, cashew nuts exported from Nigeria generated over $250million (accounting for about 10% of the country’s agricultural export) and cashew export is expected to fetch Nigerian farmer about $500million by 2023.

” it is important to note however that, one of the major constraints of the cashew industry in Nigeria is skill gap, technological know-how on processing, inadequate processing capacity of our processing plants and equipment.

” Of the 250,000 mt of cashew nuts produced in Nigeria, only about 10% is processed while Raw Cashew Nuts (RCN) are sold to cashew buying agents for export and cashew apple eaten raw and the rest wasted because of inadequate facilities to process other cashew derivative e.g cashew juice, jam, ice cream etc. This means exporting Nigerian jobs to other countries.

Edo state governor, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Stephen Idehenre, said government hope is to see the event attract more investors, impact knowledge , harmonize our cashew industry for the gain of the state economy .

Obaseki said: “Our collaboration with the private sector to grow the oil Palm and cassava value chains are testimonies of how well thought policies could foster effective economic growth and development. The state is campioning the biggest single investment in oil Palm production in Africa through Edo State Oil Palm Programme.

” A total of 62,500 hectares have been allocated to nine investors in this respect. The theme of this event is apt as the development of Inclusive Policies for the sector will no doubt grow cashew value chains as demonstrated by the Eso state government in its Oil Palm intensification initiative.

“The state is making an effort to ease farmers access to improved seeing for increased productivity. 40,000 caco seedlings would be distributed in 2023 to Cocoa farmers in the State. Also , 150,000 cashew seedlings would be distributed under our collaboration with PRO- Cashew , a project funded by USDA, and implemented by cultivating new frontiers in Agriculture.

In 2021, 50,000 cashew seedlings were distributed to farmers under the collaboration between the state government and the federation of agricultural commodity associations of Nigeria.

Speaking, the National President, National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), Prince Ojo Joseph Ajanaku, said at present Nigeria is said to be the 5th largest producer of cashew in the world with Ivory Coast taking the lead.

Prince Ojo posited that, cashew growth in Nigeria has been steadily expanding over the last 3 years by 11%, which implies that the sector has the potential to drive national revenue generation, job creation and economic diversification.

He said: “The National Cashew Association of Nigeria was founded in 1999 to harmonize and coordinate the affairs of cashew private sector players for the profitability of all stakeholders. NCAN’s long term goal is to transform Nigeria from a low-priced commodity producer to a reliable supplier and exporter of high-quality cashew products (kernels, nuts, foods and indigenous innovations etc.).

“Nigeria is currently said to be 5th largest producer of cashew in the world with Ivory Coast taking the lead.Cashew growth in Nigeria has been steadily expanding over the last 3 years by 11%, which implies that the sector has the potential to drive national revenue generation, job creation and economic diversification.

” It is worthy to mention that cashew can be produced in all states in Nigeria, however, only 22 states including the FCT are currently producing cashew in commercial volume.
More than 3 million people in Nigeria, mostly women, works in the cashew sector, which also provides the primary source of household income for more than one million rural households in Nigeria.

“While cashew output in Nigeria has experienced growth, the same cannot be said for the country’s processing capacities.
Less than 10% of cashew nut production is processed locally in Nigeria, which presents significant constraint for the country’s value addition efforts.

” Although a number of processors have successfully supplied the international market, they still need to be helped to strengthen and grow their tiny market share.
Major constraints include the high cost of capital and high staff turnover but, more importantly, the difficulty in purchasing and storing raw nuts to process throughout the year”.
