Raheem: Police Detain Suspects As Lagos Lawyers Protest

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has confirmed the arrest of three policemen who killed a female lawyer and real estate consultant, OmoBolanle Raheem while returning from a Christmas Day service with her family at Ajah under the bridge in Lagos.

He told reporters that the suspects have been taken into custody, adding that they would be prosecuted accordingly.

Besides,on Monday,Lagos lawyers took to the streets to protest the death of their female colleague.

Lawyers from the Lagos branch of the Nigerian bar association, including the leaders of Eti Osa Lawyers Forum had a brief meeting with the DPO of Ajiwe police station in Ajah, Adolf Ogwu, where the officers are stationed,

The aggrieved lawyers were told that the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti and is currently before the Commissioner of Police.

The vice chairperson of the NBA lagos branch, who led the delegation, Abiye Tam George, in her response pleaded for transparency in prosecuting the case.

The lawyers later paid condolence visit to the family of the deceased.

Meanwhile,Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA) on Monday, condemned the killing of the female lawyer.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement warned the police not to cover up the identity of the culprit, an Assistant Superintendent of Police but reveal his name and picturebto the public.

The group also demanded the immediate prosecution of the principal “murderer”.

He said:“It is very unfortunate that trigger-happy policemen continue to send young innocent Nigerians to early graves and the authorities continue to look the other way. The killing of Raheem is particularly painful because officers from the same Ajiwe police station in Ajah on December 6, 2022 also shot dead Gafaru Buraimoh, a resident of Happy Land estate in Ajah.

“HURIWA condemns these heinous assassinations and demand the immediate prosecution of the murderers involved. It is still unthinkable how a family was served the killing of their daughter as a Christmas Day and Boxing Day gift. This is the height of callousness and inhumanity of police officers despite the October 2020 nationwide protests against police brutality and extrajudicial killings.

“A report released in 2021 by a human rights group, the Centre for Democracy and Development said over 13,000 Nigerians were extrajudicially killed by security agents in the last 10 years.Extrajudicial killings by security agents have reached alarming decibel and must be stopped forthwith! The Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba; and President Muhammadu Buhari should stop these carnivorous consumption of young, innocent Nigerians by trigger-happy and dark-hearted security agents. “

According to reports, Raheem was shot dead in a car when she and her family members drove back home from a Christmas Day church service and tried to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge.

Eyewitnesses report has it that the officer was visibly drunk and all entreaties from his colleagues to allow the lady’s husband who was driving the car to go proved abortive.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC),has blacklisted Italian e-commerce companies in the country.

The regulator,in a statement warned Nigerian investing public to desist from dealing with blacklisted foreign companies.

The four companies are; Tetris Group Limited, Broker Capitals Limited, MTinvesting and NBIMarkets. The warning follows a report that the Italian securities regulator blacklisted the four e-commerce firms over fraudulent trading activities.

The commission said:“The attention of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigeria (“SEC”) has been drawn to a report that the Italian securities regulator, (Commissione Nazionale per le Soecieta’ e la Borsa – CONSOB) has blacklisted four (4) e-commerce companies and blocked their websites for fraudulent e-trading and unauthorized offering of financial services.

The report noted that online financial services providers leverage the complexity of their operations and limited understanding of most prospective investors to conceal details of their activities, thus plunging most investors into taking uninformed decisions. The CONSOB, therefore, called on investors to adopt the greatest diligence to make informed investment choices to safeguard their savings, including checking the registration status or otherwise of such companies”.

The statement informed the Nigerian investing public that the aforementioned companies are not registered in Nigeria. The investment schemes promoted by the entities are also not authorised by the SEC.

I say this because investigative journalism is on the progressive trend and requires constant capacity building. From the two-day exercise, I have been able to improve my knowledge on investigative reporting. Before the training, I was always in a hurry to conduct investigative stories and got discouraged when the right sources were not forthcoming. With this training, I have acquired new skills. I can now do better and represent my medium appropriately.”
