Emefiele Begs Nigerians To Embrace New Naira Notes

The Governor Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has implored Nigerians to embrace the redesigned naira notes.

Emefiele, who stated this at the 57th Annual Bankers’ dinner organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) held at Eko Hotel, Lagos on Friday, said that the bank has moved forward with the currency redesign of 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes.

According to him, those who refused to return the old notes to the bank by Jan 31, 2023 will have to burn them after the expiration of the date.

He said the currency redesign was as a result of the ever-escalating challenges that are inundating currency management in Nigeria, with grim consequences for our sovereign integrity.

He added:”Analysis of the key challenges primarily indicated a significant hoarding of banknotes, as over 85 per cent of currency in circulation were held outside banking system. This is even as currency in circulation more than doubled from N1.46 trillion in December 2015 to N3.23 trillion in September 2022; a worrisome trend that must be curbed.

“Whilst the global best practice is to undertake currency redesign every 5–8 years, our existing banknotes have remained unchanged in almost two decade 20 years. It is therefore no longer tenable to continue with business as usual; especially given the continually evolving circumstances that could impinge the optimal performance of the Naira. It is against this backdrop and congruent with relevant sections of the CBN Act 2007, that the CBN sought and obtained the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari to redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes.

“This policy will quicken the attainment of cashless economy as it is complemented by increased minting of our eNaira. It will curtail currency outside the banking system and, as monetary policy becomes more efficacious, help to rein in inflation”.

EFCC Moves To Rehabilitate Youths, Ex-Convicts

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa has concluded plans to roll out programmes aimed at rehabilitating ex-convicts, most of whom are youths that have been convicted for internet fraud related offences.

The EFCC boss, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by officials of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre led by the Director-General, Soji Eniade at the EFCC headquarters, Abuja, Wilson Uwujaren,Head, Media & Publicity, said in a statement.

He was quoted as explaining that the desire to partner with the relevant organisations to rehabilitate ex-convicts is to allow them to separate themselves from the psychological and environmental factors that made them commit crime in the first place.

He said:“I am worried, very concerned for the future of the youths of this country. I honestly do not derive joy in the arrest, investigation and prosecution of the thousands of youths who are supposed to be in their productive ages; but the job must be done. We must concertedly cleanse the system of all forms of economic and financial crimes. In doing that, we must also think of how to rehabilitate and bring the ex-convicts back to the society, hence the collaboration”, he said.

He added that the rehabilitation will involve psychological approaches to morality and cognitive sanity as well as general education such as literacy skills and work training, adding that the goal is to re-integrate offenders back into society after serving their time in prison.

The CLTC Director-General, Eniade, described the objective of the visit as creating a synergy to advance frontiers for the restoration of confidence in national unity and attitudinal change particularly among youths and young officers on the impact of individual actions on nation building and the corporate image of the country.

Describing the importance of the rehabilitation programme as proposed by the EFCC as top-notch, Eniade said it is very important to re-educate and retrain those who commit crime to discourage them from further engaging in the same or in any other crime.

CIPPON Goes Tough On Unlicensed Printers, Urges FG To Deny Them Patronage

Chartered Institute of Professional Printers of Nigeria, CIPPON is deepening its campaign against unlicensed printers in Nigeria, accusing them of promoting unethical practices in the nation’s printing industry.

Besides, the Institute urged the federal government and some of its agencies to desist from patronizing such printers as a way of strengthening CIPPON Act 24 of 2007 which enable it as an institution to bring sanity to the printing industry.

Specifically,CIPPON implored the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC not to award of contract to an unlicenced printing outfit to print ballot papers.

Mr. Malomo Olugbemi, the Institute’s president, who spoke at a press conference in Lagos, lamented that there has some unscrupulous printers who according to him have been a clog to the wheel of the progress of the industry, alleging them of corrupt practices which have been hampering the economic value-chain gains in the industry.

He added:“It is very pertinent that we brief the nation, particularly the president of Nigeria that is desirous of a corruption free Nation about developments in our industry that is capable of truncating the progress we have made in the quest for Nigerian printing industry remaining in Nigeria campaign.

“We are currently have a situation in the industry that’s some big printers in Abuja that represents “ the status quo “ are currently using to distabilse our industry because of the award of INEC contract .

“From the beginning of our first tenure as Council members after the election in July 2019 , we embarked on a journey of using the instrument of regulation provided by ACT 24 of 2007 to contribute to the economic growth / development of our nation by making printing business profitability again and intentionally laying out plans to institutionalized our industry hitherto dominated by “status quo”,he said.

He implored the electoral commission on the need to award contract to the institute licensed printers, adding that the leadership of the institution would not rest on its oar to fight back corrupt elements in the country.

“We challenged the status quo in our industry and called them to accountability. We call up government agencies particularly INEC on the need to patronize local printers and printing contracts should only be awarded to the Institute licensed printers as enshrined in the Act .Our campaign to have INEC patronized local printers is available in the public domain and from the onset we are not under any illusion that status quo will fight back .

“We knew that to change the status quo and address the issues of fair and transparency government procurement is like “ riding on the tail of the tiger “ still we are undaunted . We will rather try and fail than just not do anything when we had the opportunity.Alas, corruption is now fighting back and we need your help so that truth and justice may prevailed.” He said.

He advised the federal government of one Mr. Tommy Ittu who works with the federal ministry of information, saying that he has been parading himself as the sole administrator of the institute with the use of the ministry of information as his backing.

He narrated that there was a court order by the federal high court sitting in Jalingo under Hon. Justice S.A Amobeda, with suit no: FHC/JAL/CS/4/2022 which was filed by one of the aggrieved members of the institute-Mrs. Olajunmoke Owoeye which restrained the institute from conducting election.

He said the court drafted in Mr. Ittu to run the affairs of the institute and conduct election within 3 months, adding that the judgement has been challenged by the institute in the Court of Appeal sitting in Yola in a suit no: FHC/JAL/CS/4/2022.

“That the judgement was immediately challenged by the filling of an appeal and stay of execution of the judgement on the 23rd of September, 2022. That thereafter on the 29th of September 2022, Mr. Ittu posted an undated Press release proclaiming himself as the “ sole administrator “ of the Institute ( see attached 12) disregarding the appeal and stay of execution notice”,he said

He bemoaned such acclaimed position by Mr. Ittu as sole administrator was not in tandem with the ACT that set up the institute.

How Yoruba Can Harness Cultural Heritage Through Ijala Music

The Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, the Araba Awo of Osogbo, Chief Yemi Elebuibon, a Professor of Legal History, Prof. Akinkunmi Adegbola Alao, and other culture advocates have advocated the need to constantly look into ways of harnessing the intellectual foundation of an indigenous genre of music, ‘Ijala’, in developing the society.

They spoke at a lecture celebrating the 2022 Ijala Are-Ode Cultural Festival in Ibadan with the title ‘Ijala: Beyond Social Gyration to Intellectual Exposition of Yoruba Cultural Heritage’.

Dr. Olatubosun, was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Oye Oyedele.

He suggested that a home-grown method of teaching the coming generation Yoruba culture is the only way Yorubas can occupy their rightful place in the comity of nations.

He added that for the Yoruba race to conquer the world, they must appreciate who they are, learn the things of the race, and behave truly like Yorubas.

Olatubosun said Oyo state government has shown commitment to resuscitating the Yoruba culture and tradition among the younger generation, through a re-introduction of history classes to public schools in the state.

In his lecture, Prof. Akinkunmi Adegbola Alao said there is a need to go back to the basics, look beyond the social gyrations derived from Ijala by hunters, and find ways to deploy the intellectual foundation of Ijala in Yoruba cultural heritage.

He advised historians to always research Yoruba cultural values that can benefit the society.

The scholar noted that although the immediate purpose of any traditional music performances is to entertain, the genre of music could influence a renaissance of Yoruba culture and traditions.

He enjoined Africans, especially the Yorubas to embrace and leverage indigenous technology to develop human society.

“We need to go back to the basics. Go beyond just the gyrations of individuals, amusing themselves, to unearth the intellectual premise of this rich cultural tradition”, he said.

On what led to the celebration of Ijala by hunters in those days, Alao noted that the neglect by the political class, gave room for chanting Ijala by the hunters to celebrate their contributions to the society.

Alao, who commended the efforts of hunters in maintaining peace within the boundaries of their society, admonished the Political class to forthwith stop diminishing their importance.

“The nature of their profession takes them away from domestic politics. They are always engaged in warfare and deep forest hunting and so many other activities outside the immediate precinct of the established kingdoms. So many times, they are not on ground to take part in the political process, so the political class diminished their importance.

“But they resorted to Ijala to celebrate themselves, to call attention to their importance and to let people know they have contributed a lot to the development of the society”, he added

Prof. Alao who chided the Political class for refusing to recognise the little efforts of hunters, commended the Oyo State Government for partnering Ona-ara Development Forum in celebrating the Ijala are-ode cultural renaissance.

“Rather than denouncing our hunters, we must encourage them to positively use their knowledge towards the development of human society,” he noted.

Alao noted that the festival will open doors of opportunities to hunters, showcasing talents and importance of the hunters’ guild.

He further prrledicted that in five years, the festival would have been internationalized.

Prof. Alao also said that in the coming years the Organisers would call attention of the world to the intellectual precinct of Ijala, hoping that the guild would have assumed new relevance in the Yoruba society by then.

Also speaking, the Araba Awo of Osogbo, Chief Yemi Elebuibon urged Africans to develop their culture, observing that it is a must to “first appreciate who they are and what they are”.

He also warned the Yorubas against jettisoning Ifa science and technology, adding that if care is not taken, in no distant future, people of the Yoruba tribe will soon be paying the Europeans for Ifa divination.

The Chairman Organising Committee, Ijala Are-Ode Cultural Festival, Oloye Dipo Gbenro noted that the Ona Ara Development Forum seeks for the development of Ona-Ara.

He also revealed that the forefathers of all Ona-Ara indigenes were hunters and warriors, who played pivotal roles in the ‘Agbekoya war’.

He said Ijala is an expository of intellectual content, which spells history, family lineage.

“Ijala explores and exposes the inadequacies of our leaders, promotes social relations and is rich with powerful of words”, he said.

Bimbo’s Death: CSOs Blame LASG For Negligence, Complicity

Men Against Rape Foundation (MARF) and Make A Difference Initiative (MARF) have accused the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) of Lagos State of negligence and complicity in the circumstances surrounding the death of a 35 year old, Mrs Bimbo Ogbonna.

She was alleged to have bought kerosene and set herself ablaze in the heat of hostilities between her and her husband, Mr. Ikechukwu Ogbonna on the 13th of October, 2022 in her apartment in Lagos.

At a press conference in Abuja, the Executive Director of the Foundation , Lemmy Ughegbe and Director of Investigation, Make A Difference Initiative, Comrade Jacob Edi said the agency failed to act in a proactive manner in Bimbo’s case.

According to Ughegbe ” Based on our background in investigative journalism, we have taken time out to investigate the circumstances that led to Bimbo death, adding that her demise was avoidable.

He added:“It is on record that Bimbo cried out, filed a formal complaint to Lagos DSVA about serial abuses by her husband, Mr. Ikechukwu Ogbonna. We also have recorded conversation between Bimbo and a DSVA official, wherein Bimbo was distressed and called the agency for urgent action. Unfortunately, the evidence we have is that the DSVA treated it with complacency and the usual bureaucracy of public service.

“For an agency set-up to deal expeditiously with issues of Domestic and Sexual Violence expeditiously, the complacency with which Bimbo’s distress call was treated amounts to negligence and complicity in situations that led to her death”.

He said it was even more ironic that an agency whose facebook page carries the message ¬“every domestic violence case is a potential murder case” will not act on a distress call from someone who has even taken the extra step to lodge two complaints already.

Speaking,Comrade Jacob Edi, who decried the rising tide of Domestic and Sexual Violence called on the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution to call the DSVA for the files with documentary evidence of physical abuses of the deceased by her husband.

“We have seen a video recording by Mr. Ogbonna while his wife was locked inside the house with fire. How can a man whose wife is on fire be so calm to record the incident instead of calling for help? Comrade Edi queried “.

Edi said that singular act, with the substantial evidence of his abuses of Bimbo, shows clearly that he knows more than he is saying about the fire incident that killed his wife.

Africa Must Embrace Off-Grid, Renewable Energy To Tackle Power Hitch- ENGIE Energy

ENGIE Energy Access, solar homes systems and mini-grid solutions in Nigeria and SubSaharan Africa, has advised African governments to channel their efforts at alternative reliable and clean energy solution, including off-grid systems to address the recurrent power supply challenge.

Kolawole Oluwamuyiwa, Head of Customer Experience, ENGIE Energy Access Nigeria, gave the suggestion in a statement on Friday.

According to him,off-grid solutions such as mini-grids and solar home systems had proved to be triggers for socio-economic development particularly in un-served and under-served rural communities in many developing countries.

Oluwamuyiwa who stated this at the recently concluded Western Africa Solar Week 2022, advised the continent’s governments to consider partnership and collaboration with the private sector in a bid to tackle the challenge.

According to him,the company was deploying innovative solutions that made affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy available for underserved and un-served communities in more than 11 states in Nigeria, impacting thousands of individuals, homes and small businesses in communities across the country.

He emphasized that installation of the hybrid 90-kilowatt Gbangba mini-grid in Gbako Local Government Area of Niger State by ENGIE Energy Access had boosted the productive economy of the community as well as accounted for improved quality of life of the people and businesses significantly.

He said: “Our revolutionary hybrid 90-kilowatt mini-grid is a benchmark rural electrification project in Africa. The power plant was completed in December 2021 and formally inaugurated on April 12, 2022 by the Niger State Governor. The project was instrumental in breaking the lack of access to electric power for the people of Gbangba community for over 100 years of its existence.

“Since December 2021, ENGIE Energy Access has been delivering uninterrupted, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, reliable and affordable power to a wide range of customers – individuals, homes and businesses in the community. Over 1,500 lives are being directly impacted and their lives changed for the better.’

.

He maintained that getting more private sector investors in the power sector would help in addressing challenges such as poor implementation of tariff policy, high and unsustainable losses in the distribution chain, energy theft and frequent grid collapse as experienced in recent times across the country.

World Bank Underestimates Poverty Level In Nigeria-Opay Boss

The President & Co-CEO of OPAY, Mr. Olu Akanmu, says poverty level in Nigeria is worse than what the World Bank estimated.

Akanmu ,who spoke on the theme: ‘Marketing as a tool for sustainable economic development, stated this at the 11th Advertisers Association of Nigeria Africa Marketing Excellence Awards in Lagos recently.

He said,84 percent of children under five years in Nigeria are poor due to a lack of intellectual stimulation needed for childhood development. 65 percent of poor people – 86 million people – live in the North, while 35 percent – nearly 47 million – live in the South.

He added:“Cry the beloved country. Bayelsa, an oil-producing state has 89 per cent of its people poor, second only to Sokoto with 91% of its people poor. Cry the beloved country. That poverty is prevalent in Nigeria urban areas with 42% of urban poor as well as rural areas with 72 per cent of rural poor.

“With a Nigerian population of 211 million and 133 million of which are poor, 63% of our people are poor and are probably not being served by our commercial markets who will find them unprofitable. We can conclude that our high rate of social exclusion in Nigeria also translates to a high rate of commercial exclusion. That our businesses and our marketers are only serving and relevant to just about 40% of the Nigerian population or at best 50%.”

He implored organisations as well as marketers to begin to responsibly find innovative ways to solve the large social and commercial exclusion, unlock the potentials of these excluded markets with innovative service and business models that could make them profitable.

“Can we truly say we are doing responsible marketing in a country like Nigeria if most of us despite our awards tonight are not relevant to 50% of the Nigerian population,” he queried adding that “America does not have this large profound exclusion problem, at least not like our context, hence Kotler could have defined marketing with implications that only markets that could be served at a profit are worthy.

“For marketers in developing countries, he said, “Africa and in Nigeria where 50% of our population are socially excluded, we need to responsibly find innovative ways to solve our large social and commercial exclusion, unlock the potentials of these excluded markets with innovative service and business models that could make them profitable. By doing so, we will double the size of our addressable markets, and become more socially relevant while creating inclusive prosperity for all.”

Speaking to innovation, the President of the Advertisers Association of Nigeria, Osamede Uwubanmwen stated that it’s a known fact that innovation is key to ensuring our reliance and effectiveness in the scheme of things, as such ADVAN has put in place an executive council that will ensure the association is a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

“We are not financial billing plans or links to brand budgets. We are the experts, whose corporate entities have spent so much training and equipping with the needed resources to carry out their day-to-day functions. We are the expert storytellers, who bring brand stories to life,” he said.
