Leaked Memo That Ousted Former CJN Embarrassed Us -Ariwoola Reveals

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola on Wednesday revealed that leaking the internal memo written by Justices of the Supreme to Justice Mohammed Tanko, former CJN was an embarrassment to the Apex Court.

The new CJN,who said this in Abuja while responding to questions posed by Senators at his confirmation hearing at the National Assembly, revealed that the Internal Memo written by the Supreme Court Justices was not a petition to or against Justice Mohammed Tanko, but a correspondence aimed at addressing challenges of welfare and unconducive working environment faced by them.

“Justices of the Supreme Court didn’t write petition to or against Justice Mohammed Tanko as CJN few months back but memo where issues relating to welfare of each of the Justices and unconducive working environment of Justices at the Supreme Court generally were raised.

“We the Justices were embarrassed when we read content of our memo in the papers . It was never intended to be for public consumption since the motive behind the memo was not to fight or bring down anybody. When the hand written memo was signed by all the Justices, we didn’t allow anybody to see it, making its leakage to the media to be like a miracle to us”, he said.

He regretted that most of the issues raised in the memo are still not attended to, linking the situation to lack of fund and poor funding of the Supreme Court in particular and Judiciary generally.

“Some of the Justices appointed in 2020 , have not gotten official accommodation , making them to be coming to office from Satellite towns within the FCT.Judiciary of Nigeria must be properly funded, we should not beg for our entitlements.More Justices need to be appointed as out of 21 needed in the Supreme Court, only 13 are left and for expeditious consideration of cases , some of the cases should be allowed to stop at the Court of Appeal through constitution amendment to that effect.

Explaining the causes of delayed administration of Justice, the nation’s number three citizen pointed out that as Justice delayed is seen as Justice denied, so is Justice rushed, Justice denied.

According to him, the wheel of Justice may be slow but as long as it is steady, Justice will always be served on those who deserved it.

He explained the process of appointing Judicial officers, insisting that it takes a lawyer to be at the bar for a minimum of ten years before securing appointment as Judge of State or Federal High Court and minimum of 15 years for such appointment at the Court of Appeal.

The CJN also disclosed that contrary to fears expressed by some lawmakers, there was no crisis among Justices of the Supreme Court.

Security Agencies Conniving With Criminals To Steal Nigeria’s Crude Oil,PENGASSAN Alleges

The National President of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN),has alleged that the military and other security agencies were aiding and abetting criminals to steal the crude with the active connivance of the regulatory agencies in charge of the nation’s petroleum industry.

He spoke on Wednesday at the Senate Ad-hoc Committee, mandated to investigate Oil Lifting, Theft and the impact on Petroleum Production and Oil Revenues, where he also
explained that oil theft is collaborative crime between military personnel assigned to protect oil installations and the locals running illegal refineries.

Osifo specifically alleged that men of the Amphibious Brigade in Port Harcourt and their counterparts in the Navy in connivance with superior officers at different times, joined the locals in the theft.

He said: “One of the greatest problems we have, which nobody has highlighted is that there is a strong connivance of our security forces in the crime .There is no doubt about this. From our Army to our Naval officers, we have information that they pay their superiors to post them to some areas in the Niger Delta .

“I can authoritatively inform this committee that men of the Nigerian Army and the Navy pay their superiors to be posted to Niger Delta.Even when the former Commander of the Amphibious Brigade in Port Harcourt was removed, many of the men in the Command resisted to be posted out due to lucrativeness of their operational areas .

“I think the people who have solution to this problem are not even the one sitting here. They are the ones you will invite behind the camera.”

In his submission before the Senate Committee, while explaining further what is been stolen, the Executive Commissioner, Corporate Services and Administration in
Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC),Mr Jide Adeola, disclosed that the total revenue loss to oil theft is $2.1billion or N877billion.

Narrating what the nation has lost so far, NUPRC said that as at today, Nigeria produces 1.23million barrels of crude oil per day as against 1.8million barrels targeted, leading to total revenue loss as at today, to be $2.1billion or N877billion.

He added what is being stolen is about 95.4million litres per day or 600,000 barrels, since a barrel contains 159litres.

Expressing concern over this development, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Bassey Akpan (YPP Akwa Ibom North East), said, “I’ve never seen economic sabotage of this magnitude and it must be stopped.”

He added that “the required political will through instrumentality of legislative intervention shall surely be done after meeting other critical stakeholders like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited ( NNPCL), the military etc.”

Of the number, 54 of such bird strike incidents happened at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos alone,he also said.

He disclosed these at the the workshop organised by the Search and Rescue Mission of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) on Wednesday in Lagos, where he also lamented the high incidents arising from bird strike incidents in the industry.

He maintained the responsibility of keeping the airspace safe from birds incidents rest with every stakeholders in the industry, including airline operators, security agencies and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

He expressed optimism that the respective agencies would find a lasting solution to the menace soon, decrying that airlines were losing million of dollars to the incident annually.

He added: ”My record shows that we have had at least 93 bird strike incidents in all our airports between January this year to June. And out of this number, 54 of it happened in Lagos Airport alone, which represents about 70 per cent of the total occurrences. We all have to proffer a solution to this menace and I do hope we have a lasting solution to it because everyone, especially the airlines are losing money.”

Speaking, Mr. Adetunji Adetutu, Head of Unit, Bird Control, FAAN, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos ,said no airline was immune from the incident of bird strikes.

He disclosed that FAAN was doing its best to curb the spread of the incident through the procurement of modern equipment, which he said had gone a long way to reduce its impacts.

He blamed some of the pilots for the high bird strike rates in the industry, stressing that some of them were always in a hurry to depart an airport for the other and violate the instructions of Air Traffic Controllers (ATC)
Insisted that it was necessary for the airlines and their pilots to also have a change of culture by adhering to the instructions issued by ATCs.

According to him, 98 per cent of bird strike incidents occurred at the airports, especially when taking off and landing.

He said: ”The final say on what happens to the aircraft lies with the pilots. Until the ATC gives clearance for pilots to depart or land, it is necessary for pilots to listen to their advice.
”Airline operators should have a change of culture on how we carry out our duties. It’s the suitability of the environment that bring birds to the airport environment. We have water, shelter and food around the airports. Runway should be free of activities at take off and landing.”

He added that most of the birds that cause havoc at the airports migrate from other continents to Africa at a particular time of the season.

Mr. Olanrewaju Iwalaye, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, NAMA, said it was necessary for all stakeholders to curb the the actinides of bird strike incidents at the airport with the procurement of advanced equipment.

He said:”We need to find a way to address this challenge. Birds are in their natural habitant and most of our airports are built close to the forest. Apart from birds, we also have wildlife animals, which are also strikes. We hope to propose on mitigation in order to address it. We also need to know the activities of birds too. Statistics that was given earlier indicates that 93 bird incidents were recorded as at September 17, 2022, but 32 of this occurred in just two months.”

Sahara Group Becomes Member Of CO2CRC

One of Africa’s private power business, Sahara Group, has become a member of leading global carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) research organisation, CO2CRC.

The company joined the Australian-based CO2CRC to drive its commitment to reducing its emissions footprint and building a more sustainable business model. The company’s emissions reduction aspirations will be led by the Sahara Upstream and Sahara Power divisions in Nigeria, with subsequent replication across other divisions and locations.

CO2CRC Chief Executive Dr Matthias Raab said Sahara Group’s membership was a significant development. “Nigeria is the largest country in Africa with a population of more than 205 million people and it is facing significant challenges in producing energy for its people while striving to reduce emissions,” Dr Raab said.

“Nigeria is a significant oil and gas producer, but also a country where millions of citizens lack access to reliable, affordable and sustainable energy. As it moves towards widespread electrification, Nigeria is a perfect candidate for CCUS on an industrial scale to balance its need for a modern power network that can provide reliable and affordable energy for a country with a population eight times the size of Australia,” he stated.

He added: “Through our partnership, we will work closely with Sahara Group to understand their aspirations and to ensure our research can facilitate their aim to be an energy provider committed to lowering their emissions. CO2CRC welcomes Sahara Group as a member of CO2CRC and looks forward to supporting their energy transition to a lower emissions future.”

Ejiro Gray, Director, Governance and Sustainability, Sahara Group, said membership reinforces Sahara’s leading role in driving innovation for the transformation of the energy industry in Africa. “Our commitment to the sustainability of the planet, business, and ultimately society, is the driving force for continuous innovation and improvement through the evolution of thought patterns and our business processes,” she said.

Henry Menkiti, Chief Operating Officer, Asharami Energy (a Sahara Group Upstream company), said Sahara was delighted to join CO2CRC noting that membership will play a major role in steering Nigeria’s energy industry towards emissions reduction and resource efficiency. “These are key areas in Sahara’s Environmental Sustainability focus, and a first of its kind on the continent,” he said.
