Innoson Drags Imo Govt To Court Over N2.5b Debt

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company has sued the Imo State Government over its failure to pay a N2.54 billion debt owed to the firm.

Head, Corporate Communications, Innoson Vehicles, Cornel Osigwe, in a statement explained that the lawsuit filed at Nnewi high court is also claiming a 10 percent interest.

It said the state government had purchased various IVM vehicles — including the parts which it manufactured, sold, and delivered — worth N2.54 billion and refused to make payment “despite repeated demands and appeals”.

“The lawsuit, which was filed by Prof. Joseph N Mbadugha, SAN, FCPA of McCarthy Mbadugha & Co, the counsel to Innoson Vehicles, is coming against repeated attempts made by the chairman of Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing, Chief Dr. Innocent Chukwuma OFR, to the governor urging him to pay the company on the vehicles sold, and delivered to the state government,” the statement reads.

For the avoidance of doubt, sometimes in April 2021, his excellency, the executive governor of Imo state, senator Hope Uzodinma, invited the chairman/CEO of Innoson Vehicles, Chief Dr. Innocent Chukwuma to the Imo state Government House, Owerri, where they discussed and agreed that Innoson Vehicles would sell and supply various specifications of its brand of vehicles to the state government.”

The vehicles include “70 units of Innoson 5-seater double cabin pick-up (IVM Carrier) 4WD, 10 units of Innoson 5-seater double cabin military pick up (IVM G12), 10 units of Innoson 5-seater single cabin military pick-up (IVM G12), 100 units of a complete siren with public addressing system, revolving light, and street police light, 2 units of IVM ambulance vehicles, 20 Units of IVM G12 MS11 and 20 sets of B. Canopy,” Innoson Vehicles said.

“The above vehicles, which were valued at over N2.5 billion ($6.3 million), were supplied in good faith to the Imo state government based on an understanding with the governor which arose after a special request that Innoson Vehicles grants the state the favour of paying for the vehicles after deliveries to them and which request was granted and honoured.

“The special and privilege request granted to the governor turned into a nightmare for Innoson Vehicles and its chairman after Chief Chukwuma had at various times through several visits, phone calls, messages, and submission of letters requesting payment appealed to the governor and his conscience to make total payments or set up a payment plan that will offset the debt.”

Innoson Vehicles further disclosed that the situation has led to “difficulties in fulfilling its loan repayment obligations to Keystone Bank Limited and Bank of Industry (BOI)”.

The company noted that the banks granted its credit facilities at the rate of 10 percent interest and other fees therein.

“More so, it has led to the loss of profit arising therefrom and the accruing interest,” the manufacturing company added.

‘It is also interesting to note that as of July 27, 2022, the over N2.5 billion worth of vehicles supplied to Imo state government in April 2021 under the leadership of Hope Uzodinma with a dollar value of $6.3 million is now worth $3.8 million.
“Even if the money is paid today, the value of the money has depreciated by over 40 percent.”

Innoson Vehicles said it was “slamming a lawsuit of over N2.5 billion with an interest rate of 10 percent on the entirety of the sum claimed at the high court of Anambra state, Nnewi division”.

FG’s Imported Mega Transformers Arrive Nigeria September

The first batch of the mega transformers ordered by the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) are expected to start arriving Nigeria from Italy in September 2022.

The managing director of Federal Government of Nigeria Power Company (FGN-Power) Mr. Kenny Anuwe who lead a delegation that includes engineers from Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) witnessed the factory acceptance test conducted on 28 July 2022 in Trento Italy. The factory acceptance test paves the way for Siemens Energy to start delivering the transformers to Nigeria.

The development came after the Minister of Power Engr. Abubakar D. Aliyu led a delegation to Germany in April, where he paid visits to Siemens Energy factories in Berlin and Frankfurt, and held meetings with the senior leadership of Siemens Energy on the need to fast-track the delivery of the early orders that will kick start the transformation of Nigeria’s electricity.

Aliyu secured the approval of the Federal Executive Council of €63 million (Euro) for the procurement of equipment to boost power supply under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) — whose first phase will provide 10 mobile power sub-stations and 10 mega transformers that will be deployed across the country to boost and stabilize electricity supply.

In 2018 President Muhammadu Buhari initiated the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) that will enable Siemens Energy to upgrade Nigeria’s electricity systems. The first phase of the PPI seeks to modernize, rehabilitate and expand the national grid by investing in the electricity value chain, including generation, transmission and distribution systems.

Nigeria’s Forex Crisis Will Soon Be Over -CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria ,has expressed its commitment to resolving the foreign exchange issues confronting the nation in recent times.

The apex bank has been working to manage both the demand and supply side challenges, according to its Director, Corporate Communications at the CBN, Mr. Osita Nwanisobi .

He spoke in Abuja, where he also admitted that there was huge demand pressure for foreign exchange to meet the needs of manufacturers as well as those for the payment of tuition, medical fees and other invisibles.

He expressed the bank’s concern about the international value of the naira, adding that the monetary authority was strategizing to help Nigeria earn more stable and sustainable inflows of foreign exchange in the face of dwindling inflows from the oil sector.

He noted that recent initiatives undertaken by the Bank such as the RT200 FX Programme and the Naira4Dollar rebate scheme had helped to increase foreign exchange inflow to the country. According to him, the Bank’s records showed that foreign exchange inflow through the RT200 FX Programme in the first and second quarters of 2022 increased significantly to about US$600 million as at June 2022. Similarly, he disclosed that the Naira4Dollar incentive also increased the volume of Diaspora remittances during the first half of the year.

He added that interventions such as 100 for 100 Policy on Production and Productivity, Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP) and the Non-Oil Export Stimulation Facility (NESF), among others, were also geared towards diversifying the economy, enhancing inflow of foreign exchange, Stimulating production and reducing foreign exchange demand pressure.

Nwanisobi therefore said that the Bank would continue to make deliberate effort in the foreign exchange sector to avert further downward slide in the value of the naira, which he observed is fuelled by speculative tendencies.

Reiterating an earlier position of the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, he urged Nigerians to play their role by adjusting their consumption patterns, looking inwards and finding innovative solutions to the country’s challenges. He submitted that Monetary policy alone could not bear all the burden of the expected adjustments needed to manage the challenges around Nigeria’s foreign exchange and admonished that: “It’s our collective duty as Nigerians to shore up the value of the Naira”.
