We’re Not Withdrawing Naira Notes From Circulation -CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, says there was no plan to replace the Naira notes in circulation with digital currency, the eNaira.

The Director, Corporate Communications Department of the apex bank, Mr Osita Nwanisobi, gave the clarification at the weekend.

He disclaimed  the statement purportedly to have been made during a stakeholders’ engagement on eNaira adoption in Asaba, Delta state was misconstrued and therefore called on the general public to disregard such in it’s entirety.

He explained that  the digital version of the Naira is meant to complement the existing currency notes and therefore, will circulate simultaneously as means of exchange and store of value.

Speaking on the benefits of adopting the eNaira, the spokesman hinted that the digital legal tender aside from the safety and speedy features, it will also ensure greater access to financial services by the underbanked and unbanked populace thereby enhance financial inclusion.

He implored members of the public and business owners to embrace the digital currency, the eNaira as it offers more possibilities.

Misconduct: Oyo  Suspends Two Medical Personnel

The chairman of the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, Otunba Dr. Gbola Adetunji, has suspended a medical officer and a nursing officer  found  to have been involved in unprofessional conduct.

They were suspended after a meeting of the Management held at the weekend, following their diversion of a patient to a private facility for emergency surgery.

Dr. Adetunji  said in a statement   that the suspended officials were petitioned by a relation of the said patient and that the Management investigated and found them culpable.

He  added: “The Oyo State Hospital Management Board has suspended two medical officers for diverting a patient to a private facility for surgery.This decision followed an investigation of a petition received from an affected relation of the said patient.

“Further investigation is continuing by the Disciplinary Committee of the Board. “Following the activities of the Monitoring Committees of the Ministry of Health and the Board and reports of members of public, the Board had come to the conclusion that a few bad eggs in the state health sector are demeaning the good works of the majority of the public health workers.

“The Board has had several interactive sessions with a cross section of the health workers, emphasising drastic attitudinal changes in the course of their duties.The Board is greatly pained by this unprofessional attitude despite the huge investment and welfare packages in the health sector by the present administration under the dynamic and people-oriented leadership of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde.”

The Board warned health workers in the state to continue to be professional and law-abiding, saying it would not condone any untoward act that can bring the state health sector into disrepute.

“The Board is now sending a strong note of warning to health workers in the public sector to buckle up or face severe disciplinary action, as the leadership of the Board is migrating from counselling mode to serious disciplinary mode.While the Board publicly appreciates those who are professionally committed to their duties, it will not relent in fishing out the bad eggs within the system”

Sanwo-Olu Signs Landmark Air Quality Declaration 

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwu-Olu has signed the C40 Clean Air Cities Declaration alongside Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Dakar, Ekurhuleni, Freetown, Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Tshwane efforts to improve air quality.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement released by by C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and made available to journalists in Abuja on friday said that he  was proud to join the mayors and governors of nine other African cities in making an unprecedented, ambitious commitment to improve air quality with the signing of the C40 Clean Air Cities Declaration.

It  added:”The need to breathe clean air is more important than the licence to pollute it.Lagos has committed to improving air quality and i appeal to the responsibility of every citizen, because together we can”, he said.

The statement  disclosed  that by signing the C40 Clean Air Cities Declaration, the governor   recognised that breathing clean air is a human right and committed to work toward safer air quality.

The chairman of C40 Cities and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said: “With COP27 being held in Africa later this year, I am delighted to welcome ten new African signatories to the C40 Clean Air Cities Declaration. As Chair, I am determined to do more to support cities in the global south, who are on the frontline facing the worst consequences of climate change.”

Khan said he is focussing C40’s resources on helping cities around the world accelerate their efforts to tackle the climate emergency, reduce toxic air pollution, and address inequalities.

He lamented that the world is at a crossroads, adding that efforts must be made to allow cities around the world to become greener, fairer, and more prosperous for all.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, President of the C40 Board, and 108th Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg noted that many of the world’s fastest growing cities are in Africa, adding that the ten mayors can help show cities everywhere how to protect public health, fight climate change, and expand economic opportunity all at the same time.

“This new commitment is an important step to help build momentum and highlight Africa’s leadership in the lead-up to COP27 in Egypt later this year,” Bloomberg said.

Bandits Free Four Kidnapped Kaduna Students

Terrorists have freed four kidnapped female students of the College of Education Gidan Waya in Kaduna State.

The students were Racheal Edwin, Esther Ishaya, Promise Tanimu, and Beauty Luka who were kidnapped at Mile 1 area of Gidan Waya axis last Monday.

President of the Students Union in the college, Benjamin Fie confirmed that the terrorists demanded huge sums as ransom and the students were set free on Friday.

“They were rushed to Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital in Kafanchan for a medical checkup after which they were reunited with their relatives,” Benjamin Fie said.

Kano Police Intercept Car Loaded With  Bombs

Police in Kano have intercepted a car loaded with bomb-making devices and two AK47 rifles in Kano.

Spokesman for the command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, who conveyed this in a statement,said the crackdown followed intelligence report on the vehicle.

He said,on Thursday,following an intelligence report that a Mercedes Benz Motor Vehicle, ash in color with suspected sophisticated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) is coming from Jigawa State to Kano State, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko,  immediately raised a crack team comprising Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological Radiological and Nuclear Defence (EOD-CBRN) and Operation Puff Adder.

He added:“At about 1630hrs of the same date, following a hot chase, the suspects abandoned the Motor Vehicle at Bubbugaje Quarters Kumbotso LGA Kano State. A technical search conducted by the team revealed that the motor vehicle was fully loaded with Improvised Explosive Device materials.

“Two (2) AK-47 Rifles, Four (4) AK-47 Magazines, One Thousand and Ninety-Eight (1,098) Live Ammunition, and Two (2) Pistol Magazines were also recovered.  An investigation has commenced”
