At 88, Subomi Balogun is a Symbol of the Nigerian Dream

The assertion that Nigeria is a blessed nation, is a truism of monumental dimensions.
And in spite the disparaging acts of a few charlatans across the disciplines in the geo-polity, there still abounds in the land, men of character and value, the thought of whose principles and actions ignite hope.
Symbols of consolation, they have by their deeds across time, reverently and consistently lifted the banners of genuine brotherhood, business integrity, dexterity, true statesmanship, exemplary industry, perseverance, and every other value of importance. And by a mixture of sheer grit and hard work, while steering their business brands, they have become creators of employment, bastions of treasured values, crusaders of sustainability and worthy legacies, incubators of financial substances, as well as society’s solid standard references for success and notable history makers.
In this pack is the cerebral entrepreneur, a rare gem with panache, Christian with infectious value system, and the possessor of many positively inspiring titles – Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun. Call him a symbol of the true Nigerian dream, and you would be stating the obvious. That dream encapsulates warm relationship with and accommodation for people of other ethnicities, religions and cultural values, patriotism and visioning, – vital ingredient in the founding and nurturing of enterprises, as well as the spirit of altruism and help for others in need. In all these, the beloved the Olori Omo-Oba Akile Ijebu, has quite an impressive record.
Many stories of him in the public space are tonics for motivation, for embedded in them, are the lessons of dexterity, doggedness and commitment. A typical example is the story of the quest to obtain a banking license for the First City Monument Bank (FCMB), which today has become a premium banking brand. “What I did at that time was unheard of in this country, for one individual to say he single-handedly wanted to establish a bank”, as against the statutory requirement for the bank promoter to have a foreign partner, which Otunba Balogun did not have.
“But I was inspired by my God through the mouth of a 9-year-old son of mine. We were praying and the young boy went to his mother and said, ‘I just pity Daddy. Why can’t he go and start his own bank, instead of wanting to be the Chief Executive of somebody else’s bank?”
In obeying that submission however, Otunba Balogun came face to face with hurdles, which without vision, commitment and the help of God, would have overwhelmed him.
In retrospect, he said: “it was Alhaji Otiti and the former Vice President, now late Dr Alex Ekwueme, who were used directly by God to assist me in doing what many people thought was impossible. In the case of Otiti, he was a CBN deputy governor and someone in the Central Bank had just mentioned to me, ‘we cannot give you a license because you don’t have a technical partner’. You know my reply? I said, “God is my partner”. Though Otiti had reassured him by saying, “Subomi don’t worry, the CBN governor and I would arrange something provisional, which will enable you run that bank and later, look for a foreign technical partner”, it did not happen exactly that way.
Here again, you cannot but agree that divinity was at work for him, ensuring the opening of another door upon the closing of one. Rather than Otiti, it was former Vice President, now late Chief Alex Ekwueme, who had been a friend well before the civil war, that God positioned for him and used. Balogun and his wife just resolved to ‘waylay’ Ekwueme in church. “At the Cathedral Church, my wife and I planned that when Alex was being led out that I would grab his cloth and my wife would grab that of his wife. When we made the moves, the security people with them thought something was wrong with us, but Alex looked back and said,’’Subomi, Bimbola, what is happening?’’.
“Do you know what I told him? I said, ‘Mr. Vice President, why are you not giving me a license?’ So, Alex said we should come to see him, and he assured me that the following Thursday, I would get my license. By 3 pm of that Thursday, a minister phoned me, and he said ‘Egbon (Big Brother), congratulations, the Vice President said your license has been approved’. True friendship, across ethnic lines had spoken, a friendship that had taken strong roots long before Otunba’s moment of need.
It was a clear case of one good turn deserving another, which lessons would become more obvious. Recalled from the point of view of Otunba Balogun himself:
“The first house I built in my life in Apapa, Alex had the next building to mine. As soon as the war started, some pool players took over the house and were playing pools there. They would be there until midnight, but in wanting to protect my own house from being burgled by those people, I arranged for the police to evacuate them. And having done that, I renovated the house and rented it out to a lady from the East and I was receiving the rent.
When the war ended, Alex Ekwueme returned to Lagos and came to see me. After the exchange of pleasantries, I went to my room and brought out a big envelope.”
Otunba Balogun narrated: “In those days, we didn’t use cheques much, it was all cash. So, I gave him the money. I told him I renovated his house, rented it out and this is the rent I collected. Dr Alex Ekwueme looked at me, he could not believe it. All he could mutter was “Mike, I am grateful”. It is the kind of reciprocity that only men of integrity are made of. It can be imagined what could have happened, if Otunba had not before then, shown himself trustworthy. Perhaps, his aspiration to birth a bank would have remained a pipe dream. On the other hand, having been tested, he became trusted, and at the point he needed help, to establish his own bank, the help came readily and easily.
Today, several other companies have sprouted from the brand, and they include: FCMB Group Plc, subsidiaries such as First City Monument Bank (FCMB), CSL Stockbrokers, FCMB Capital Markets, First City Asset Management Limited (FCAM), FCMB Microfinance Bank and FCMB UK. There are also, FCMB Pensions Limited and FCMB Trustees Limited.
There is more to the life of this man to demonstrate his ever willingness to be of service. For example, in a situation where many still tend cause divisions, using religious inclination, Otunba Balogun, has by his philanthropy, not only blurred the line, but obliterated it.
He gives to the Jew as much as he does to the Gentile. So much, he had taken it upon himself to invest in the spiritual growth of Christians in his hometown, through an annual retreat and many more. Interestingly, this retreat also accommodates Muslims. What is the essence? The objective is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, worship the Almighty God, touch, and impact humanity. Why not, when he was made the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians, even when his mother was the Iyasuna of Muslims there, he has continued to enjoy the prayers and well wishes of all and sundry.
“If God singled me out and made me what I am, who am I? It is in appreciation of the unique endowment the good Lord made to me that I do whatever I do. I am not the only Ijebu to be a lawyer, I am not the only Ijebu to be a banker, I am not the only Ijebu to be made Otunba, I am not the only Ijebu to be anything. There are all sorts of birds flying in the air, but we know the Eagle is the king of all birds”, Baba, as he is fondly called by many around him, enthused.
He is Otunba, and further, they decided also to make him the Olori Omo-Oba (the head of all the king’s children) and yet, the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians as well as the Olori Ebi of the Arojojoye Ruling House in Ijebu Ode, of Ogun State. That town is also host of the multi-billion Naira Otunba Tunwase Paediatric Centre which he recently gave out as a total gift, to the University of Ibadan and the University College Hospital (UCH), both in Ibadan. This is aside regular donations and lending support to worthy courses far and wide., which altogether, continually proclaim the kindheartedness of this true symbol of a classic Nigerian brand.
“I am always joyous to do good and to have people around me, wherever you come from. And the good Lord has always been faithful to me”. Otunba Balogun also proves that people do not always hit it big early in their careers but should see each modest stage in life as a step to something greater in the future. His immediate job before jetting out of the country for the proverbial golden fleece was as a classroom teacher. And even when he was done with schooling in the United Kingdom, he did not allow the flash lifestyle there, tie him down.
Many other jobs he landed had enough pecks to keep him hooked, but he was persuaded enough to give to each, only what was necessary. Such included the engagement at the Western Region’s Ministry of Justice, where he was a Crown Counsel and later, a Parliamentary Counsel, at the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank, a dream workplace, for many young Nigerians then and at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the famous World Bank, and its subsidiary, -the International Finance Corporation (IFC) both in Washington DC.
Armed with a bigger vision of himself and tomorrow, he promptly returned to the country, and began to explore business ownership options. His rewards and recognitions have come in quantum– profit for investments, commendation for good works, good name around town, and fulfilment in life.
But the icing is the joining the class of distinguished Nigerians, bestowed with the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Officer of the Niger (CON). For being a true symbol of the Nigerian dream, Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun deserves all the accolades. All men of goodwill obviously doff their hats today, for this rare gift of a man and chorus for him, the prayer of many more days in the land of the living, in good health of body, of mind and of the soul. Nothing less can suffice as a birthday gift for the billionaire with panache, as this architect of history, Otunba Balogun, turns 88 this month.

CBN To Manufacturers :Don’t Take Dollar Loans
…Says Agric is Nigeria’s Saving Grace
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has urged Nigerian manufactures whose revenues are naira- denominated to  shun  dollar loans.
It promised  to continue to provide naira funding, advising that where the revenue stream is in naira, dollar loans should be avoided.
The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele spoke during a facility tour of Tolaram Group projects manager of the Lagos Sea Port under construction.
He added:“So, for any entrepreneur that wishes to do business in Nigeria, we will provide naira funding and will always advise that particularly if your revenue stream is in naira, such company should avoid taking dollar loans. Take cheap naira loans at single digit interest rate with two years moratorium”.
He assured that  the CBN will continue to  encourage people to take advantage of such loans to drive industrialisation in Nigeria and get a manufacturing business back alive again.
He  disclosed that the bank has provided N100 billion intervention fund to Tolaram Group under the Differentiated -Cash Reserve Ratio or through the Commercial Agriculture Credit Guarantee Scheme, which represents only 10 per cent of the N1 trillion, which is about $2 billion, project embarked by the company. “You can see we have sown a seed and we have also given support through making foreign exchange available for them to bring in the equipment to get the Lagos Port operation to work.
“The Tolaram Group has clearly demonstrated that it is one of the largest manufacturing companies with 19 factories in the country. We will not rest on our oars to the extent that we must make sure that whatever you need either Naira loans through our interventions or dollars to import your equipment and plants and the rest of them, we will continue to accord you priority.”
Emefiele also disclosed that Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria Limited (InfraCorp), Lagos state government and Federal Government will collaborate and begin engagement meant to ensure easy movement of goods out of the Lagos Free Trade Zone. The N15 trillion InfraCorp is co-owned by the CBN, the African Finance Corporation (AFC) and the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA). “The InfraCorp is chaired by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Its board has been formally constituted, with  a CEO in InfraCorp and as soon as we leave this meeting, I will be calling on InfraCorp to begin engagement,” he said.
“I will also be involved in engaging the Lagos state government, as well as the Federal Government as well as the Federal ministry of works see what can be done on evacuating goods out of Lagos, as well as decongesting the traffic for people living around Lekki port axis. I want to give assurance that this is something that would be dealt with. This would be a middle-to-long-term plan. We are happy that this port infrastructure is here and will improve ease of doing business, reduce congestion at the Lagos Tin Can and Lagos Apapa ports.”
He said the apex bank would work with the Lagos Free Zone by having a dedicated export desk that would make it easy for goods to be exported out of the Lagos Port.  “That is a very essential thing that we need to deal with, because again talking in a very selfish mode, we need a foreign exchange.  If we export, we earn foreign exchange, and I am going to start working with them to ensure that we designate the Lagos Free Zone as an export zone,” he said.
Meanwhile,Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, has  expressed satisfaction on the tremendous impact agriculture and the huge role agriculture has played in revitalizing the country in the last six years.
Emefiele disclosed this to  journalists during an inspection tour of the palm plantation at Odighi village in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state at the weekend.
He wondered what would have happened to Nigeria if the agriculture sector had not been revamped, vis a vis the rising cost of food items across the globe.
The CBN Governor expressed  satisfaction that the Bank has assumed a pivotal role since 2015 upon the pronouncement by President Muhammadu Buhari that “we produce what we eat and eat what we produce” by coming up with several initiatives aimed repositioning the sector with a view to creating employment opportunities as well as growing the the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.
On his assessment of the farm, an elated Emefiele, expressed joy in the blooming maize and cassava, stating that in the next 12 months, harvests would have commenced.
Acknowledging the significant role played by Edo state Government, thanked Governor Godwin Obaseki immensely for matching words with action by making sure that arable land is made available to those who are genuinely interested in agriculture. He also appealed to other state Governors to emulate Edo state which has So far, made available about 70 per cent of the promised arable land.
He spoke on the socio-economic impact of the CBN interventions, Emefiele singled out the Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) among other interventions schemes, which revolutionized agricultural practice whereby small holder farmers who hitherto could not approach commercial banks for loans, are now being granted credit facilities in the forms of inputs like seedlings, fertilizer and herbicides. Those small holder farmers can now cultivate and produce enough for their families and sell produce as loan repayment with ease, thereby generating employment, improving living standards and creating wealth simultaneously. Emefiele also commended the efforts of the promoting company, Agri-Allied Resources and Processing Limited and its parent company, Tolaram Limited for heeding to clarion made by the CBN to source their critical raw materials locally. He noted that the company has painstakingly embraced backward integration principle by acquiring farmland to the tune of 18,000 hectares for cultivation of oil palm, cassava and maize which are the critical raw materials used by the group.

50,000 Nigerian Women Die From Pregnancy Annually – FG

No fewer than 50,000 Nigerian women died from pregnancy and childbirth-related causes annually, Dr Salma Anas-Kolo,  Director, Department of Family Health, Federal Ministry of Health, has said.
Salma, who disclosed this in her welcome address at a three-day virtual training for media practitioners organised by Rotary Action Group for Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health, said most of the death are not reported.
She said child death in Nigeria was still very high.
She added:“On a daily basis, we have many women and children dying, larger than COVID-19. Every year, 40,000 to 50,000 women die from pregnancy and childbirth-related causes, but most of them are not reported.”
Noting that over 90 per cent of these deaths in both mothers and children less than five years are preventable, the Director of family health stated “each life is important and every death of a woman or child should be accounted for.”
She further stated that the Federal government was also set to increase the involvement of religious leaders with large followings in giving information about maternal and newborn health, nutrition and child spacing to ensure the quality of life and nation-building.
She announced that Nigeria is set to launch its Family Planning 2030 commitment in line with the global movement supporting the rights of women and girls to decide freely and for themselves if or when to have children.
According to her, the launch is coming on the heels of the importance of family planning to meaningful sustainable development and the Federal government’s commitment to provision and uptake of family planning.
In his remarks, Professor Emmanuel Adedolapo Lufadeju, National Coordinator, National Family Planning Campaign Rotary (RMCH) Nigeria,  said that family planning was important to improve the chances of child survival and population management.
TCN Boosts  Egbin 330/132/33kV Substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria,TCN, has boosted  its Egbin  330/132/33kV Transmission Substation with the installation of a 60MVA 132/33kV power transformer.
The transformer was installed by TCN in-house engineers and energized at about 13.05pm on the 2nd of March 2022,Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, said in a statement.
She  noted that with the new 60MVA power transformer, the substation capacity to supply bulk electricity to Ikeja Electricity Distribution company has increased by 30MVA.
She explained that the development was because her agency has decommissioned an old 30MVA transformer within the substation, which will be serviced and moved to other areas within its network that has a history of minimal electricity demand.
She disclosed that the substation capacity upgrade will ensure that more power is made available for IKEDC to take to its franchise areas within Ijeda LCDA and Ikorodu Local Government area axis.
Lagos Needs Modern Rail Routes -Group

Ọmọ Eko Pataki, a socio-cultural Yoruba group, has informed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that  Lagos need modern rail routes system as alternative transportation not more vehicles.
Prince Uthman Shodipe-Dosunmu,  its Secretary-General, who said this in a statement, said the purchase of 500 vehicles by Sanwo-Olu is Greek gift to Lagosians
He said:”Lagos State doesn’t need more vehicles on our already cluttered roads. What Lagos needs as a widening megalopolis is well contemplated alternative routes of transportation that will combine modern railroad systems, the charted pathways of the Lagoon; short, interlocking bridges linking the new burgeoning towns and cities, the 4th mainland bridge which is now more of a mirage, and the long abandoned Atlantic Super highway that  is supposed to traverse the gateway of the Lekki peninsula down to the reaches of Port Harcourt.”
According to the group Sanwo-Olu fancifully called the white and blue taxis Lagride which in his view will expand transportation access to Lagosians.
“We do not think so. It will never happen . It is a wasteful, ill- thought, hurriedly composed project that will not add any value to the transportation challenges of commuters. As a matter of fact, the so-called Lagride is a masked  political gerrymandering, an half-witted partisan move shrouded in personal gains and selfish motivations,” the group said.
The group  maintained  that Sanwo-Olu ought to focus on a progressive, forward-looking administration and not a hurriedly constituted shambolic affair, an untidy Greek gift meant for a narrow, crude electioneering purpose.
Emir Of Kano Is My Brother – Air Peace Boss

The Chairman of Air Peace Airline, Barrister Allen Onyema, says the Emur of Kano is his brother and nothing can break the bond between them.
Onyema spoke on Saturday after he was presented with the Independent Newspapers Limited Businessman of the Year Award at an event held at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, said what happened between the royal father and his company was a misunderstanding.
Decrying  that the matter is  fast wearing ethnic colour, Onyema  implored everyone involved in the face off between the company and Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, to embrace peace.
He said:” Air Peace was born out of peace. I am also a man of peace from childhood and some people are just trying to blow the issue out of proportion.I am using this medium to appeal to everyone that is connected and involved in the matter to sheath their swords and allow peace to reign. The matter is gradually turning to an ethnicity issue we should not allow that to happen because I love my country. The Emir of Kano is my brother,” he added.
He thanked Independent Newspapers Limited for  conferring the award on him, saying he is elated by the fact that the company could honour him with such an award.
Group Decries Electricity Supply Hitch, Fuel Scarcity

Coalition for Affordable and Regular Electricity (CARE), has decried the current epileptic power supply and fuel scarcity, saying Nigerians are subjected to monumental suffering on account of the twin issue.
The  group in a statement by its national coordinator,Chinedu Bosah, and secretary,Monsuru Shoyombo, said the hardship is unbearable in view of  the fact that the only alternative for a number of people is the reliance on private expensive electricity generation through generator sets.
The group said, the ongoing fuel scarcity has made it extremely difficult to generate electricity at homes and businesses and as a consequence, the cost of living has increased.
According to the group,it is unthinkable that Nigeria is stewing in crisis despite a global comparative advantage it  is supposed to have in electricity through  gas, abundant solar, wind and hydro reserves while it is also a major crude oil producer.
It said since November 2013 when the power sector was privatized, the story has been constant darkness, tariff hikes, outrageous estimated (crazy) billings and bailout of irresponsible and inefficient power sector companies.
It added that   between 2005 the process of privatizing began and today, over $15 billion has been expended on the power sector including the senseless bailouts.
It maintained that the current fuel scarcity and poor electricity supply are further evidence of the failure of the Buhari-led regime and the capitalist policies (privatization, deregulation etc).
It said:”These two sectors are overwhelmingly under the control of the private sector profiteers with the self-serving government playing a bell boy role as so-called regulator. Privatisation and deregulation have only put more money in the pockets of a few privileged and greedy individuals leaving the vast majority of the working masses in more misery and crises.
” The irony of it all is that the same Buhari-led capitalist government often claims paucity of funds when it comes to public education, healthcare and basic amenities and as a result these critical sectors are underfunded. Besides, the government keep borrowing trillions of Naira only to squander most of it including public funds generated on white elephant projects and bailout of weak and inefficient private companies and capitalist elite.
“Coalition for Affordable and Regular Electricity (CARE) calls on Nigerian workers and electricity consumers across communities to resist tariff increment and struggle for massive public investment, free prepaid meters for all consumers and uninterrupted power supply. The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) must end their strategic partnership with the self-serving bourgeois ruling elite and mobilize the working class and the poor masses to reverse the privatization and deregulation policies.
“Fundamentally, the way forward is the renationalization (public ownership) of the power and oil sectors, massive public investments and democratic control and management by the working class and consumers”
