New Electricity Tariff Takes Effect Next Wednesday-NERC

No 50% increase in electricity tariff — NERC - The Point

A new electricity tariff increase has been approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC) and would take effect from September 1st this year,PremiumNews has learnt.

Olumide Anthony Jerome,General Manager,Loss Reduction,Eko Electricity Distribution Company, confirmed the tariff adjustment in a notification sent to his firm by NERC and seen by PremiumNews.
The notification attributed the increase to the nationwide mandate to implement the Service Based Tariff approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC).
The power firm told its customers that the increase will be reflected on the energy bill for October,2021 which represent consumption for September this year.
It added:”In  addition, for our metered customers with internal vending arrangement,we urge you to adjust the rates accordingly to reflect the new tariff as released by NERC.Eko Electricity Distribution Company appreciates your continued patronage as we go through this period of change and growth”.
The new tariff adjustment is likely to met with stiff opposition by consumers in the country in the face of the current economic challenges therein.
The Nigeria Labour Congress had earlier this month insisted  that  the Federal Government must implement by December the agreement to reduce electricity tariffs by N15 per kilowatt-hour.
It  cautioned that it would not accept the serial violations of agreements, noting that it was serving the government a notice.
The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba:“It is significant that the incessant increase of electricity tariff was one of the several issues discussed between the representatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria and organised labour, hereinafter referred to as the principals, on 28th September 2020.
“Specifically, an agreement was reached at the meeting to set up an FGN-Organised Labour Technical Committee on Electricity Tariff.
“The technical committee thus set up on 28th September 2020 had a clear mandate to review several critical issues in the power sector and to suggest reforms that will provide succour to Nigerians over the short and long term.”
Wabba explained that the technical committee submitted its final report in January, noting that the Federal Government and labour met on February 22 and discussed the report.
The statement added, “The principals accepted, among other recommendations, that necessary actions should be taken to use efficiency to bring the gas price to below $1.50 per MMBtu.
“Whereas, the Gencos are required to pay as much as $2.50 per standard cubic feet, other gas users, however, get the same at lower rates, ranging from $1.50 to $1.70 per scf.”
Wabba said the principals resolved that gas companies should be integrated into the Central Bank of Nigeria payment wallet of the Nigerian Electricity Sector Industry to guarantee payments for gas and contract sanctity of Gencos.
The NLC said, “Consequently, congress demands of the Federal Government to reduce the pricing of domestic gas supply to Gencos to less than $1.50 per scf.
“Congress remains implacably committed to the ultimate reduction of electricity tariffs by N15 per kilowatt-hour by December 2021 as contained in the agreement.”
He added that the congress had thus served notice that the posture of the Federal Government to flout agreements was completely unacceptable and would be resisted.
Open Letter To President Muhammadu Buhari  On The Worsening State Of Insecurity In Nigeria

Open Letter to President Muhammadu Buhari - Vanguard News
On behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC), the Central Working Committee (CWC), Members and Staff of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), we write to formally express our dismay and frustrations at the wave of unending security challenges facing our dear Country, Nigeria, and attempt to proffer solutions to this malaise.
While acknowledging the gallant efforts of our courageous soldiers and security personnel who sometimes pay the ultimate sacrifice in a bid to keep the rest of us safe, we believe that much more can be done especially in the provision of adequate equipment and boosting of the morale of the officers by significantly improving their welfare.
The harmful effects of kidnappings, killings and assassinations have directly impacted PENGASSAN as an Association as the lives of our members and the public have been put in danger. We have therefore, chosen this means to join millions of Nigerians to demand that you deploy the powers vested on you by the Constitution of the Federal Republic Nigeria to immediately put an end to the myriad of senseless and unprovoked killings of our brothers and sisters under whatever guise.
As a responsible Association whose activities are vital for the economic development of our dear Country, we cannot sit back and watch miscreants masquerading under the togas of ethnic militias, regional or religious armies destroy the only Country we can proudly call our own.    We pledge our readiness to partner with you in your continued efforts to improve the security and general welfare of the Nigerian citizens.
Your Excellency, arising from an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting where we painstakingly discussed the dire security situation in our dear Country; we hereby highlight some of the cogent recurrent security breaches and proffer solutions to this hydra-headed monster.
Specifically, we are worried about the increasing attacks by bandits and other criminal elements on Institutions in the Zones where majority of our members live and work i.e., Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna. Recently States under Port Harcourt and Kaduna Zones were on the front burner with news of security threats, attacks, and killings. We must unequivocally restate the importance of these Zones to the economic development and industrial peace of the Nation and therefore must be protected at all costs.
Your Excellency, kindly treat this communication arising out of our NEC deliberations with utmost importance because as leaders in this important sector, we are finding it increasingly difficult to put our members in check as their restiveness regarding the growth and rise of insecurity across the country  is getting out of control. Consequently, your fatherly disposition to the issues raised hereunder will go a long way to allay their fears and reassure them that their concerns are being handled at the highest level of Governance.
We also pledge our readiness and commitment to support your administration to reposition all vital sectors in your quest to bequeath a better Country to the upcoming generation.
1. Activities Of Armed Herders In Kaduna And Plateau States And Incessant Abduction Of Students
PENGASSAN have observed with total dismay the bloodbath currently ongoing in Kaduna, Zamfara, Niger and Plateau states without any meaningful solutions in sight or significant Federal Government interventions.
The Kaduna carnages is more worrisome given the fact that there are an array of military and para-military institutions scattered all over its nooks and crannies. Educational institutions in the State are also enmeshed in the murky water of the unending security threats in the land. Armed gangs have repeatedly struck some schools and universities, abducting more than 700 students.
On Monday 31st of May 2021,156 pupils from a school in Niger State were abducted with a N110 million ransom tag placed. On August 3rd, 2021, another 25 citizens of Kaduna state were gruesomely murdered by suspected armed herdsmen.
Again, on August 15, 2021, the Nation woke up to the unpleasant news of massacre of over 20 travelers with 40 persons still missing in Plateau. Also, coordinated attacks on communities especially in Plateau and Kaduna with farmlands and crops destroyed have since become a new ‘normal.’
Our Position
We demand the declaration of a state of emergency and a total overhaul of all the security apparatus within the states of Kaduna and Plateau to wipe out all criminal elements especially in Southern Kaduna.
We also demand that the States should be empowered with a special Police Force that will enable them take charge of security issues in their domain as the era of centralized policing is outdated. The States should be empowered to take charge of their security.
2. Food Security
Your Excellency, we do not need experts from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations to predict that the prevailing level of insecurity plaguing the country will lead to acute food shortages this year and beyond.
To further buttress the looming dangers ahead, farmers in states such as Benue, Plateau, Katsina, Nasarawa and Taraba cannot readily access their farms due to several security challenges.  It is necessary to secure the farmlands and the farmers who work on the land as the aggregate food production by the local farmers is the bedrock on which our food security systems rests.
Our Position
Our position therefore is that extreme care should be taken to offer all those engaged in all forms of food production the necessary protection to continue the assiduous work to feed the nearly 200 million mouths nation-wide. It is not out of place for the involvement of the Military in daily patrols to protect this important industry.
3. Youth Employment As Catalyst To Security
We acknowledge that unemployment is one of the most serious problems facing Nigeria like many other countries in the world and is directly responsible for the high rate of insecurity in Nigeria.  We have an army of unemployed youth some of whom are graduates who constitute the highest demography involved in criminal activities.
Our Position
For sustainable development to be achieved, the Government must urgently address the unemployment crisis facing the country’s youthful population, especially graduates to be able to adequately tackle its security challenges. While Government vision of paying stipends and daily feedings to school children and the aged is commendable, its implementation is questionable.
We suggest that Government should redirect most of these funds to other productive sectors such as sports and entrepreneurship development capable of catering for a larger population of the unemployed.
4. Insecurity And Challenges Of Foreign Direct Investment
Sir, challenges posed by insecurity has limited the inflow of foreign direct investment into the Nation’s economy and the accompanying consequences are unimaginable to our growth and development.
No genuine investor, either local or foreign will invest in an environment infested with official graft, excessive bureaucracy, corruption under different guises, kidnapping for ransoms, double taxations, and wavering business policies.
Our Position
To overcome these uncertainties, it is our opinion that the various levels of Government should initiate programmes and policies that will gradually improve the ease of doing business in Nigeria and allow private investors with the resources and technical knowhow to invest in hitherto designated State-owned establishments.
Government’s role should be limited to regulating all the players and providing the enabling environment and security of investments.
Please accept the assurances of our highest regards and esteem.
Yours faithfully,
 President,PENGASSAN,Comrade Festus Osifo
General Secretary, PENGASSAN ,Comrade Lumumba .I. Okugbawa, MINM

The group gave the commendation ahead
of the upcoming National Conference on Ajaokuta Steel Project and President Muhammadu Buhari’s Industrialization Agenda,
The group mentioned  the recent Financial Reports of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company, NNPC that have not seen the light in the last 44 years, the recent signing into law of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) that was pending before previous governments in the last 20 years and others as exemplary, progressive and  value adding by nature.
The group noted that though security challenges is the major hindrance to accelerated human, environmental and economic development, the ongoing infrastructural developments across the country and the promise by the government to do more before the end of the administration is worthy of commendation and should be supported by Nigerians.

He maintained that the  most important economic survival and Nigeria’s industrialization strategy is the Ajaokuta Steel Company revival, adding that the project the project is part of President Buhari’s agenda to strengthen the nation’s economy.
Jinns Give Missing Person’s Whereabouts

The Sindh High Court has heard that jinns had given the whereabouts of a missing man to his family. In yet another odd piece of news, colleges in Karachi ran out of question papers and asked students to help each other, but they won’t call it cheating.
The Sindh High Court heard cases on missing persons on Thursday. One petitioner insisted that his brother Usman Ghani, one of the missing persons, was in the Malir prison.
The investigation officer said he had already spoken to the jail authorities and Usman was not found in the said prison. The court then asked Usman’s family who had informed them about Usman’s possible whereabouts. The answer made everyone in the court chuckle.
The petition told the court that jinns had informed him that his brother Usman was in barrack number 9 at Malir jail to be precise. He claimed the jinns lived with him.
The court was amused. It asked if the Ranger’s prosecute could seek help from jinns to find missing persons.
The court ordered that the petitioner be shown every barrack in the Malir jail and allowed to meet every single prisoner to clear his doubts.
Meanwhile, intermediate students in Karachi sat for their chemistry exams on Thursday. A report in a local newspaper claims some of the girls colleges ran out of question papers and they asked students to pair up – a strange proposition for final exams!
Students told the newspaper that at Apwa Government Degree college Karimabad invigilators ran out of the question papers before half of the class was handed the sheets. The invigilators then asked students to pair up and use a single question paper.
The arrangement allowed many students to be good Samaritans and they helped their fellow students to whatever degree they could.

The feat, which was the first in the history of the 44year-old state oil company received presidential applause on Thursday.
At a press conference in Abuja,Kyari attributed the turn-around of the Corporation from a loss of ₦803bn in 2018 to profit of ₦287bn in 2020 to the aggressive implementation of cost-cutting measures, improved efficiency through business automation, emphasis on commercially-focused investments and non-interference in the management of the corporation from any quarters.

Sunday Igboho,Kanu Nigeria’s Enemies-Obasanjo

Obasanjo: Sunday Igboho, Nnamdi Kanu Can't Break Nigeria
Those calling for the creation  of Yoruba and Biafra nations as well as others working for the dismemberment of Nigeria are enemies of Nigeria, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared.
He said their agitations would hit the rock as Nigeria is better as one indivisible nation.
The cost of staying together as a nation ,he maintained,is cheaper than the cost of dividing Nigeria into pieces.
He disclosed this on Friday during a book launch in Lagos, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media Kehinde Akinyemi.
The book titled: “My Life and Times, a Memoir by Sunday Mbang”, organised by the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and supporter by others was held at the Admiralty Centre, Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Obasanjo, who described the cleric  as steadfast and lover of Nigeria, assured the Christian leader that the enemies of Nigeria won’t succeed.
“We are here to honour somebody we should honour, and learn from him (Mbang), to show that we genuinely love and appreciate him for the service he has rendered to the Christian community in this country and world over. And to assure him that whatever happens, we will continue to work for unity, peace, security and progress of this country.
“I know that these are things that are dear to his heart. We want to assure you that Nigeria will continue to exist because the cost for Nigeria not to continue to exist is much more than the cost for us to make Nigeria to continue to exist. There are many people high and low – who can be described as enemies of Nigeria but they will not win over those who are friends of Nigeria,” Obasanjo was quoted to have said.
The cleric recalled how he became friend with Obasanjo and since then “we have become brothers, but of different mothers.”
