Amended Law Empowers Governor To Extend Tenure Of  LASIEC

Lagos Assembly extends LASIEC board's tenure by 6 months
The Lagos State House of Assembly has reviewed and amended a portion of the law creating the state’s Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
The Assembly amended the law by creating a subsection for Section 2 of the law. The new  subsection 5 gives the governor of the state the power to extend the tenure of the commission based on exigencies.
Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, leader of the House, told the House that the amendment was permitted by existing law, chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Public Petitions and LASIEC, Hon. Victor Akande, explained that the amendment is to resolve the lacuna that could occur between the period the tenure of the commission elapses and when new members are appointed by the Governor.
“The bill is just for a singular amendment or a fraction of the law and the major issue is that it is seeking for us to give the Governor a leverage in case of scarcity of time,” he said while urging his colleagues to support its passage.
Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) said the amendment is in good faith for the progress of the state and effective running of the government.
He recommended  that the amendment should be in such a way that there would be recourse to the House should there be any reason to extend the tenure of the commission.
Hon. Tobun Abiodun (Epe 1) supported the amendment and noted that it was being done to “ensure we abide by the law.”
He noted that the amended portion of the law states that if the tenure of the commission expires when the government has yet to make fresh appointments, the tenure could be extended by six months.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa explained that the portion of the law was being amended to meet the exigencies of time.
Obasa explained that the amendment became expedient to ensure that the process leading to the effective conclusion of the local government election in Lagos State is not hampered as a result of the soon-to-end tenure of the members of LASIEC.
He argued that a legal extension of the members of the commission would help them effectively conclude the elections with the backing of the law.
He noted that an additional six months as suggested by the bill was too wide since the period is simply meant to perfect fresh appointments.
While suggesting a reduction of the time period to three months, the Speaker also maintained  that the request for such extension should be subject to a review and approval of the House.
Ekiti’s 5MW Power Plant Inspired By Afe Babalola-Fayemi

Fayemi commissions ABUAD's 2.5 MW IPP, As Ekiti 5Mw Plant Near Completion
Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, says the successful completion of the Independent Power Plant at the Afe Babalola University, Afo-Ekiti was a big challenge  to his government.
He disclosed governor  made this observation  while inaugurating the 2.5 MW IPP at the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
He assures that the state government would continue to support the institution’s initiative to achieve its visions of becoming a globally renowned institution.
He explained that Aare Babalola’s intention of building a power plant project in the institution five years ago prompted his administration to commence the construction of a five megawatt power plant two years ago to address the electricity challenges confronting the people of the state.
He described the establishment of the IPP projects in the institution as revolutionary with the hope that more of such would spring up in the state to address the epileptic  power supply in Ekiti state.
He  maintained that he was  inspired with the ABUAD founder’s audacity of imagination and determination to succeed in achieving huge projects, adding that he has challenged and demonstrated a mindset of possibilities to those in leadership positions.
He  commended Aare Babalola for contributing immensely to government projects especially the airport project for which he had committed himself to constructing a terminal building. He noted that the airport project and the Ekiti knowledge zone are two major projects of his administration situated along ABUAD axis to inject more life into the environment.
He said: “Aare Afe Babalola is an uncommon gift to us in Ekiti State and Nigeria by extension and the globe also by extension and no amount of encomium and adulation would be enough in appreciating how much of the gift he is to us in Ekiti. His audacity of imagination and determination when he wants to accomplish the task. We have just gone round to either commission or laid the foundation of nine projects. When we calculate what the projects will cost, it is possible dampen a man’s spirit if it is going to be possible. This institution is fast becoming a state within a state, because When you have an independent power project, a water project, a secondary school, different components in the farm, there is an hospital; which I regard as the best in the country, I go everywhere promoting it, you understand why I said we have a state within a state.
“One of the things Baba has done so well is to challenge those of us in leadership, as I indicated earlier he spoke to me five years ago about the IPP project and we were also looking for how we can improve on the electricity challenge in the State, two years ago we started an independent power project for the state whose credit goes to baba on no uncertain ground because he was able to show that these things are doable it is no rocket science once you put your mind to it.”
Dr Fayemi who also laid the foundation of the bottle recycling factory at the ABUAD industrial plant, said the initiative was a thought for the future to address the imminent challenges of climatic changes.
