NAFDAC warns against using chemicals to enhance food, drinks | Tribune Online
National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against adding chemicals and additives to food and drinks to enhance the taste.
Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, who gave the warning in Abuja said the   practices could lead ton severe illness and  death.
She assured that her agency would continually  ensure that only safe food and other regulated products are available in the market for consumption and use by Nigerians.
Her caution came  against the backdrop of the recent Kano incident where three people reportedly died as a result of their consumption of dangerous chemicals used as additives while serving a flavoured drink to unsuspecting consumers in the ancient city.
She announced  that a preliminary result of the agency’s investigation was submitted to the Kano State governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, during her two-day visit to the state on an on-the-spot assessment of the incident.
She regretted  that three  casualties were recorded with many people having their health compromised.
‘’Even if just one person died, that will be one too many. It’s heart-warming to note that all the merchants of the deadly chemicals and additives have been apprehended while further investigation continues.”
She  maintained  that food contamination and poisoning could occur through consuming expired food.
“Food poisoning could also occur by preparing food with poorly sourced water and putting cooked food on the shelf for several days or months or in the refrigerator for too long amongst others.
‘’We are very particular about food additives, about the temperature at which food can be kept, or about the expiration date of food.
“If all of these are violated, then there could be food poisoning whether it is food or water, adding chemicals and other substances either to enhance the food or change its form can be dangerous especially when we can’t verify the source and content of such additives.”
Adeyeye also disclosed that NAFDAC is now working assiduously in partnership with the Kano State government with a view to preventing the reoccurrence of the March 11, 2021 incident.
She said that her agency will be working with the Kano State Taskforce under the Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, which is domiciled in NAFDAC, and the Nigeria Consumers Protection Agency in Kano.
She explained that shortly after the news about the Kano incident was received by NAFDAC, six directorates of the agency immediately swung into action to unravel the mystery behind the sad event.
She disclosed that internal checks revealed that only two of the five flavoured drinks identified in the incidence were registered by NAFDAC while three were not on the Agency’s database.
She said samples of the chemicals and additives that were added while preparing the flavoured drinks for consumption were collected and taken to NAFDAC’s, laboratory in Kaduna for testing.
‘’We have five flavoured drinks. Two were registered while three were not. Any food that is unregistered are not guaranteed by NAFDAC and could be is unwholesome.
“It’s fake food. It was most likely smuggled into the country, we tested all the food samples, and there was E-Coli bacteria in some.
“One would wonder how E-Coli bacteria would get into powder.
“It depends on the storage. If it’s stored in a very humid condition and expired, the packaging probably was getting compromised, you can get bacteria into the dry powdered medium. But ordinarily, it shouldn’t happen,” she said.

NLNG Signs  Pact  With  USAID To  Stop Malaria In  Bonny

Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG),has  signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the U.S. Agency For International Development (USAID) to make Bonny Island, its operational base, malaria free.
The MoU was signed by NLNG’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Tony Attah on behalf of NLNG and the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard.
Through the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), USAID will provide technical assistance to NLNG’s led Bonny Island Malaria Elimination Project (BNYMEP). BNYMEP seeks to reduce the malaria burden, move the community to pre-elimination status, bring malaria-related mortality to zero, and make Bonny Island our country’s first malaria-free zone.
The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) is focused on reducing malaria-related mortality by 50 percent across 24 high-burden developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria and three Southeast Asian countries, through a rapid scale-up of four proven and highly effective malaria prevention and treatment measures.
The MoU also includes a partnership between NLNG and the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) regarding support to the HIV/AIDS Surge Project, which focusses on the control of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) on Bonny Island. The HIV/AIDS Surge Project is currently coordinated by Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) in Rivers State.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Attah explained that NLNG commenced the Bonny Malaria Elimination Project (BNYMEP) in January 2019 as part of its vision to transform Bonny Island into a tourism and economic hub in the West African region.
He  added  that a malaria-free zone was key to attracting investments to the Island, which will positively impact the socio-economic well-being of its residents.
“We are ready to put Bonny Island on the map as one the first malaria-free community in Nigeria and a reference point in the global eradication of the disease. Malaria has impacted negatively on health care in Nigeria, and it is time to change the narrative.  It is time to free ourselves of the economic burden that this scourge has imposed on us for years, freeing available resources to tackle other issues and to attain more Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs). We hope to set a precedence with a workable model for private sector participation in SDGs’ achievement. These goals align with our vision of helping to build a better Nigeria,” Attah said.
“Reducing the burden of malaria and HIV/AIDS on Bonny Island are goals now within our reach,” the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard said at the ceremony.
She added: “This partnership moves us closer to achieving those goals. I commend the efforts of NLNG to meet its social responsibility in helping the economic climate of Bonny Island by improving the health of its residents.”
The company has a record of intervention in combating the scourge, with programmes such as Roll Back Malaria Campaign as well as staking $100, 000 in its sponsored Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, The Nigeria Prize for Science, in search for solutions to the disease.
On Roll Back Malaria Campaign, NLNG supported efforts of both the Federal and Rivers State governments to roll back malaria in all its host communities in the state through improved sanitation habits and use of mosquito/insecticide treated bed nets. The company distributed anti-malarial drugs and insecticide treated bed nets as part of that campaign.
NLNG, with industry partners, is also sponsoring the Ibani Se Initiative, a health care and awareness programme aimed at reducing the prevalence rate of HIV endemic on Bonny Island.
Why Nigerians  Seek Medical Help Abroad-Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has  said  that unfriendly attitude of hospital staffers, poor hygienic and house keeping standard in the presence of sophisticated equipments and qualified medical doctors as some of the failings triggering medical tourism in the country.
He said  these factors  are more frequently responsible for loss of confidence of end users in the nation’s health sector more than lack of equipments.
Represented by the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, President Buhari, said this during the Commissioning of seven projects executed by Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu led management of the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The President, who expressed delight at the strides recorded by the management of the hospital, however charged management of hospitals across the country to also pay attention, not only to improving staff harmony and welfare, but to retraining health care givers for even better professionalism.
The projects which were commissioned by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila included a Conference Center and Telemedicine Hall named after the President; and a pharmacy complex named after the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo Pharmacy Complex.
According to President Buhari, the Telemedicine Center will increase the knowledge base and skills of care givers on a continuous basis, especially at a time of COVID-19 pandemic when virtual meetings and online consultations have become a new normal.
Buhari said: “We still get all too often for comfort, disconcerting reports of not friendly attitudes of staff to patients, reports of hygiene and house keeping standards that leaves something to be desired even in the presence of sophisticated equipment and well qualified doctors.
“Such simple failings like this, are more frequently responsible for the loss of confidence of the end users in our health system than even the lack of equipment. They are the triggers for the distrust that will lead people to go on medical tourism.
“We have a lot of work to do in that area and I want to believe that the managers of our hospitals after such laudable, fantastic infrastructure investment we now begin to pay attention, not only to improving staff harmony and welfare, but to retraining health care givers for even better professionalism that deliver service in a productive and courteous atmosphere based on the lessons we learnt from our traditional African hospitality.
“This International Conference centre and Telemedicine hall which I’m informed has the capacity for 1,500 persons is said to be equipped with modern gadgets to facilitate international meetings which should contribute to the knowledge base and skills of care givers on a continuous basis.
“Telemedicine is an icing on the cake for universal health coverage. This government is passionate about healthcare at grassroots level and it is our policy to have one functional Primary Health Care in every political ward of the country, this will be almost 10,000.”
