The Kano State Police Command has invited Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, and State House of Assembly aspirant, for questioning over an alleged unlawful display of a firearm during a political gathering.
In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said that the alleged display of the firearm constitute a violation of the Firearms Act.
The police spokesman said, “He is currently at the Command’s State Intelligence Department (SID) and investigation is in progress”
Warkal was invited to the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano, following a viral video reportedly showing him openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle at a political event.
The police said its cyber patrol team detected the video while monitoring social media platforms as part of the Command’s intelligence-led surveillance operations across the state.
“On the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, the said Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal was invited to the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano,” Kiyawa said in a statement issued on Monday.
The Command said it was examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged display, stressing that the act could “incite fear, intimidate members of the public and breach public peace and security.”
CP Bakori warned that the Command would not tolerate “any act of lawlessness, thuggery, or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace,” regardless of the status of those involved.
He further directed political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other relevant laws.
