CBN Clears Air On $3.7bn Foreign Reserves

Mohammed Shosanya

The Central Bank of Nigeria has faulted the recent estimation of the country’s foreign reserves by JP Morgan, saying it was misleading.

JP Morgan had estimated that the CBN’s net FX reserves fell to $3.7 billion at the end of 2022, compared to $14 billion in 2021.

Director,Monetary Policy Department, CBN, Hassan Mahmud, said that fluctuations, liabilities, and encumbrances to the reserves were only natural and normal.

He said, “We also read the JP Morgan numbers in-house and we didn’t panic over that. That’s not the first time we are seeing people, institutions reeling out numbers; they must have their intentions to do that, whether to rouse market sentiments, whether to mislead the public.

“But the central bank has tried as much as possible to be transparent. What I will say about those numbers is that it is just funny in the sense that number one, reserves like any account balance, is a flow; there are changes that go within it at any particular time.

“Two, even if you have outstanding liabilities, you don’t mark the outstanding liabilities to market on a day and say this is your net balance”

He implored Nigerians to disregard the JP Morgan estimate.

Mahmud said: “It is a ridicule for us (CBN) to come to the public domain, whether the CBN governor or deputy governor to speak on issues by JP Morgan. I don’t even know who said it in JP Morgan.

“I don’t want us to get to that level where we will be ridiculing ourselves as a sovereign or country because of a private investor that has its own motives for giving those numbers. It could also be that those numbers were quoted out of context.”

According to him, the CBN owned about 80 percent of funds in reserves mainly to support the local currency in periods of volatility as well as to boost confidence of foreign investors.

“We have the numbers there. The central bank’s reserves are on our bank net. Yes, the figure you see today may not be exactly to the last decimal point but you have that picture that you are seeing there,” he said.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed payments of match bonuses and allowances for the Super Falcons.

The NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday while appearing before the House of Representatives ad hoc committee on dispute between Super Falcons and NFF

He said no fund was released for participation but revealed that in the 2023 FiFA women’s world cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand $960,000 were given to all 32 countries that qualified.

According to him, this preparation money provided by FIFA is to be used by these countries to prepare the teams for the world cup.

“We can’t use this money to pay outstanding allowances for 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup”, he added.

She said the document of how the Super Falcons were funded in the 2019 FIFA women’s world cup, the breakdown of match bonuses and its slips for 23 players and the coaching crew be provided by NFF before Aug 30.

The NFF President replied that they usually get funded by CAF and FIFA, adding that no payment was gotten from the Federal Government for its staff and officials rather the federation got its operational cost from FIFA.

Women’s World Cup:FIFA Begins Disciplinary Action Against Rubiales Over Kiss

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Luis Rubiales on Thursday after the Spanish Football Federation president kissed Spain star Jenni Hermoso on the lips following the Women’s World Cup final last weekend.

“The FIFA disciplinary committee informed Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Association, today that it is opening disciplinary proceedings against him based on the events that occurred during the final,” world football’s governing body said in a statement.

The body said the incident “may constitute violations of article 13 paragraphs 1 and 2 of the FIFA disciplinary code”.

Spain star Hermoso released a joint statement with union Futpro on Wednesday, which called for action to be taken against the RFEF president.

“We are working to ensure that acts such as those we have seen never go unpunished, that they are sanctioned and that the exemplary measures are adopted to protect women footballers from actions that we believe are unacceptable,” the statement said.

Global human rights organisation, Amnesty International, gave their support to Hermoso on Thursday.

“Amnesty International wants to show their support for the demands of the player, who has asked the (RFEF) to set underway ‘exemplary measures’ regarding the non-consensual kiss,” said the organisation in a statement.

“(We) underline that this behaviour is a form of sexual violence like any other, and cannot be justified in any way.”

Spain’s women’s football league, Liga F, has also called for Rubiales to be sacked.

The RFEF have opened an investigation into Rubiales’ conduct and are holding an emergency meeting on Friday.

Rubiales, 46, initially attacked his critics before eventually apologising but the criticism of his behaviour has not abated.

Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez previously said that Rubiales’ apology for the kiss was “not enough”.

Earlier Thursday Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti criticised Rubiales for his conduct.

“It’s a very delicate topic, like most people it was behaviour that I obviously did not like,” Ancelotti told a news conference. It was not the behaviour of a president of the federation.”

The Italian coach would not be further drawn on the issue.

“I don’t know if he should resign or not, I think he will take the most adequate decision,” added Ancelotti.

Real Madrid play Celta Vigo in La Liga on Friday and the Galicians’ manager Rafa Benitez also spoke about Rubiales.

“The success of the national team is the news and unfortunately it’s been relegated to the background,” said Benitez.

“We all agree we have seen behaviour which was not correct and the competent authorities are there to take decisions.”

Getafe president Angel Torres criticized Rubiales on Wednesday and said the president could not spend “one minute more” in his post.

American forward Megan Rapinoe, the world’s highest-profile women’s player, was similarly scathing in an interview with The Atlantic earlier this week.

“What kind of upside-down world are we in? On the biggest stage, where you should be celebrating, Jenni has to be physically assaulted by this guy,” said Rapinoe.

She referred to Rubiales’ behaviour at the final as portraying “a deep level of misogyny and sexism”.

Sexual Assault: R Kelly Loses $500,000 To Victims

A United States judge has ruled that Universal Music Group must provide singer R. Kelly’s sexual assault victims access to his royalties, which total more than $500,000.

US District Judge Ann Donnelly,in Brooklyn, New York, signed an order on Wednesday directing Universal Music Group to turn over the money to satisfy unpaid restitution and fines that the singer still owed.

Donnelly had earlier ordered Kelly to surrender almost $28,000 in his prison inmate account and apply it to his unpaid fines.

The judge fined Kelly in 2022 when she sentenced the R&B artist to 30 years in prison for racketeering and sexual exploitation of minors.

He received a 20-year sentence after being found guilty in a different federal child pornography case in Chicago; the majority of those years will run concurrently with the Brooklyn sentence.

Kelly is currently in a federal prison in Butner, North Carolina. It’s not clear whether he has a lawyer representing him.

Kelly’s attorneys expressed displeasure last year that federal prosecutors had taken the “unprecedented” action of taking the singer’s prison prisoner account, claiming they had been unable to establish Kelly’s failure to make payments in full to his victims in the form of penalties and reparations.

The judge later rejected their argument that prosecutors acted prematurely when they’d frozen all but $500 in Kelly’s prison inmate account.

Collapsed Building:Wike Orders Arrest Of Landlord,Resettlement of Indigenes

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike has ordered the arrest of the landlord of the two-storey building that collapsed in Lagos Crescent located in Garki 2 of Abuja.

He also ordered that the indigenes of these places be resettled and then the government has to plan out this place, saying, cities are planned to forestall these kinds of occurrences.

Wike gave the order during an on the spot assessment of the site of the building collapse on Thursday in Abuja.

He added:”It is not as if anybody has any personal vendetta but for me it is for us to do the right thing. I don’t know why it has taken so long that the FCTA has not resettled them and so we will take immediate action to see that the indigenes of these places are resettled and then the government has to plan out this place.

“When government says take a building plan, it is not to suffer anybody but to make sure that everyone is protected. Cities are planned to forestall these kinds of occurrences. Imagine buildings without approval. I will ask that we must identify and arrest the owner of this property. It is very important.

“Government will of course take over this area and make sure no further development is carried out here. I want all the stakeholders here to please work with the government in the interest of everybody. No one has come here to say I like A, I don’t like B. I know sometimes government decisions may not be too comfortable with the people, but in the long run it is in the interest of the people”, he said.

Wike, however, commended the ongoing rescue efforts, saying, “It’s unfortunate that we woke this morning to the very disturbing news of this building collapse. It is not what we contemplated. Let me thank the agencies particularly NEMA and FEMA that have supported us to rescue not less than 37 lives. It’s unfortunate that we lost two lives”

He appealed to the Permanent Secretary to make sure that funds are raised to pay the hospital bills of those who were rescued to minimize casualties.

“Secondly, these are the things we have been saying, nobody knows whose turn it will be, therefore, when government says it will take actions in areas we believe there are illegal developments or buildings that don’t comply with the standard codes.

“Now we are all gathered here and none of us is happy we are here, these are the things we are trying to forestall. Again I sympathise with those who lost their lives, the government will pick up the bills of all those in the hospital. We will also support the rescue efforts and ensure that they get to the last level and rescue everyone still trapped in the rubble”, he added.

Also, Director, Department of Development Control, FCTA, Tpl Mukhtar Galadima hinted that :”The building is located within the Garki indigenous settlement. The building had two suspended floors, one used for commercial activities while the other floors were used as residential accommodation. The building caved in yesterday and 37 persons were rescued

He added:”The statues of the place is that it is not a planned area so the development had no planning approval. In fact the area is meant for resettlement from here to Apo resettlement town”.End
