Ogun Begins Conversion Of Mass Transit Buses To CNG

Mohammed Shosanya

A team of technical engineers from India has arrived in Ogun State to commence the process of converting vehicles from fuel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The move signals the commencement of the E-Mobility and Gas Mobility Programme of the state government, which involves the conversion of mass transit buses from fuel to gas and tricycles and motorcycles to electric.

The four-man technical team will work on the pilot project, initiate the first phase of the Gas Mobility Programme and further prepare a process map to scale up and do a phase-wise implementation on all the commercial buses in the state.

The Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration had in March this year, in partnership with Nigerian Transport Solutions Limited (NGTSL), took delivery of the CNG conversion kits for the pilot phase of the state’s mass transit buses to be fueled by the CNG.

The CNG project demonstrates the commitment of the administration to a cleaner economy and ensures cheaper means of transportation in the state, especially with the removal of subsidy on fuel by the federal government in May.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Tokunbo Talabi, in a statement on Wednesday, said the Indian engineers are in the process of starting the conversion process.

He said, the state’s mass transit buses will start running on CNG in the coming days, in line with the promise by Prince Abiodun that the project would commence in the first week of August.

“The CNG team are on the ground. I was part of the team that received the CNG kits on behalf of the government early in the year and I visited the project site this morning (Tuesday). His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun is a man of his word and such a highly progressive Governor deserves all necessary support for Ogun State to continue to progress.

“The aim is to improve and modernise bus operations in Ogun State through conversion of buses to Compressed Natural Gas by equipping them with the latest technology to improve environmental and operational performance.

“Moreover, the newly fitted buses are expected to improve public transportation reliability, safety and efficiency and reduce polluting air emissions. The pilot project will commence with the conversion of twenty buses from diesel to CNG and exploring the performance before rolling out the programme,” he said.

According to the SSG, the team is also training locally-based auto mechanics and technicians on CNG conversion.

This, he explained, will ensure technology transfer and create jobs for the teeming youths in the state.

The conversion process is expected to take between four to six weeks, involving the Bus Mass Transit buses currently in operation in the state capital, Abeokuta as well as others to be deployed in the fleet to serve the planned Mowe-Berger axis.

Talabi said the scheme will relieve the burden imposed on the people of the state by the subsidy removal through cheaper means of transportation.

Killer Diseases: 600,000 Kano,Katsina,Jigawa Children Yet To Receive Vaccination -UNICEF

Over 600, 000 children are yet to be immunized against killer diseases in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, the United Nations Children Fund,UNICEF,has said.

The Chief,UNICEF Field Office, Kano, Mr. Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah, disclosed this on Wednesday, during a media dialogue on routine immunization and the zero dose campaign,in Kano.

He said:”In the three states of the Northwest of Nigeria: Kano, Katsina and Jigawa, there are over 600,000 children who have not been vaccinated against childhood killer diseases.

“This is closer to about 40% of the total unimmunized children in Nigeria. Over 300,000 of those children are in Kano State, representing 50 per cent of the three states under the UNICEF Kano Office. This situation is unacceptable and should be reversed urgently.”

Mr. Farah implored the governments of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states to take concerted action to strengthen their primary healthcare system.

He urged them to implement the Nigeria primary health care under one roof policy to ensure one-stop functional primary health care centre per ward, particularly, those local government areas with unimmunized children.

He further emphasized the need for the governments of the three states to ensure an integrated package of primary health services are provided to families in one functional health facility.

They should also increase strategic interventions to address persistent gap in human resources and recruit additional skilled critical cadres of health workers, including vaccinators, Community Health Influencers and Promoters Services (CHIPS) agents for immunization demand creation.

Mr. Farah advised governments of the three states to provide essential medicines and health commodities, infrastructure, electricity, and water supply for quality integrated Primary Health Care service for people.

He reiterated UNICEF’s commitment to work with and support the governments of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states towards ensuring that the well-being of children and their rights are fulfilled and protected.

He added: “Immunization is the single, most cost-effective, and high-impact intervention which protects children against illness and death caused by vaccine- preventable diseases.

“Yet, despite proven safety, efficacy, and availability of vaccines, Immunization uptake has not always been optimal. Myths, disinformation, misinformation, and rumours, have contributed a great deal to poor immunization uptake, exposing children to high risk and death that can be avoidable when they don’t get immunized.

“The National Immunization Coverage Survey Results have shown that over the years, Nigeria has made progress in Immunization coverage, however, it is also clear that gaps exist.

“As the UN agency mandated for the protection and promotion of children’s rights, we are extremely concerned, when children don’t get immunized, when children have no access to immunization services their basic fundamental right is not fulfilled.

“I also take this opportunity and urge traditional and religious leaders, community leaders, and civil society organizations, to forge partnerships to eliminate the number of unimmunized children in Nigeria.

“I therefore, urge media participants at the media dialogue today, and indeed every media practitioner across the country, to create the demand for immunization and to raise awareness of the importance of Immunization by providing accurate information to caregivers, families, and communities.”

ISPS Facility Code:US Coast Guard Promises To Offer NIMASA Expertise

Mohammed Shosanya

The United States Coast Guard i committed to Nigeria’s quest to implementing the International Ships and Ports Security (ISPS) Facility Code in line with acceptable global best practice.

Lt. Cdr. Jonna L. Clouse who lead a team from the US Coast Guard in Nigeria for peer review, disclosed this while on a working visit to the headquarters of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA.

She explained that engaging NIMASA on a constant basis is to ensure more Ports and Jetties in the country implement ISPS Code, thus enhancing safety of the entire Nigerian maritime domain.

“We are in Nigeria to assess the level of compliance with the International Ships and Ports Security (ISPS) Facility Code. Our desire is to enhance cooperation between the Nigerian maritime sector and the United States Coast Guard. We will also offer our expertise to NIMASA in closing identified gaps. We hope to work with NIMASA and reduce or end the Conditions of Entry regime for Vessels from Nigeria to the United States”, she said. Lt. Cdr. Clouse further commended the NIMASA Management for efforts made in cooperating with the USCG.

Speaking, the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, noted that due to the dynamism of maritime threats and patterns, NIMASA has been fortunate to have peer review partners that create avenues for developing capacities needed for effective ISPS Code implementation

Shedding light on the steps taken by NIMASA to ensure ISPS Compliance in over 90% of Ports and Jetties in the country, Dr. Jamoh highlighted the need for the United States to review the Conditions of Entry regime for vessels calling at some Ports in the United States.

He added:“It is worthy of note that despite efforts taken by NIMASA in improving Port Security and ISPS Code implementation in Nigeria, the issue of Condition of Entry (COE) still hovers over vessels from Nigeria calling at Ports in the United States. For vessels leaving Nigeria to undergo stringent port controls before being granted access to US ports, it has adverse effect on the aggregate shipping economies of Nigeria. The delays lead to additional costs that strain an already present high freight cost within the Gulf of Guinea. This is adversely affecting Shipping in Nigeria

“We have reviewed this decision taken by the USCG and proposed an action plan to enable the US Coastguard physically determine the compliance levels of these facilities in the Condition of Entry list. We at NIMASA are calling on the US Coast Guard to facilitate the removal of Nigeria from the Condition of Entry list”.

He also declared the readiness of NIMASA to cooperate with the US Coast Guard team to close all identified gaps before the full Audit in August.
