Alleged Misconduct: NBA President Shuns Call To Bar Ceremony

President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Mikyau (SAN) has shunned the call to bar ceremony, presided over by the Chairman, Body of Benchers, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN),on account of alleged misconduct.

He conveyed his action in a statement issued on Tuesday and made available to Premium News in Lagos

He stated that to attend the ceremony would be to endorse, celebrate or condone a practice what he considered unwholesome and unprofessional, by virtue of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2007.

His action came two days after he wrote a letter to the Chairman of the Body of Benchers, asking him to step aside from presiding over the call to bar ceremony.

He made reference to the allegations of professional misconduct against Olanipekun in the wake of the scandalous email by a former partner in his firm, Ms. Adekunbi Ogunde to SAIPEM, an expatriate company claiming that the senior lawyer uses his office as BoB chairman to influence judges and get favourable judgements for his clients.

He said: “At the meeting of the BoB held on 5 December 2022, I drew the attention of the Chairman to my letter, and called for deliberations on same since it directly impacts on the propriety of the Chairman presiding over the Call to Bar ceremony, but this was not done nor were the hard copies of the letter distributed to the benchers.

“The meeting of the BoB was adjourned to January 2023, on a date to be fixed by the Chairman. In the circumstances, therefore, having regard to my firm persuasion that the matters raised in my letter should have led the BoB to ask the Chairman to recuse himself in the interest of safeguarding the integrity of the Legal Profession, I am in good conscience unable to attend and participate in the call to bar ceremony.

“The NBA under my leadership remains committed to the protection of the integrity of the Bench and the Bar and will not shirk that responsibility,” he said.

Reps Propose Six Months Imprisonment For Parent Who Abandons New Baby

The House of Representatives,Tuesday proposed a prison term of not less than six months for any parent who willfully abandons his/her newly born child for the purpose of abdicating parental responsibilities.

The bill which passed through second reading on the floor seeks to amend the Child’s Right Act, just as it proposed six months imprisonment or N200,000 fine for any parent who abandons a child after birth.

Sponsored by Hon. Sergius Ogun from Edo state, the Bill seeks to amend section 14 of the Principal Act by inserting a new subsection (3) immediately after the subsisting subsection (2).

The proposed amendment said: “Subject to the provisions of this Act, no child shall be abandoned at the time or place of his birth, the conditions of his birth notwithstanding.

“Where a parent abandons a child at the time or place of his birth, he shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction be liable to fine of two hundred thousand naira or imprisonment for six months or to both such term and imprisonment”.

Leading the debate on general principles of the Bill, Ogun explained that the proposed legislation seeks to make provision within the child’s Right Act against the practice of child abandonment by parents.

Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai from Delta state said while it is the duty of parents who have brought children to world to care for them, the government too has the obligation to complement parents.

“Every person has obligation to contribute to society. We have social security in USA. Whereby you are not working and you are not able to take care of your child, social security are there. It is in that principle that majority of our northern state are yet to domesticate this law, this law must have a human face,” he added

Deputy speaker of the House, Ahmed Wase who presided over the plenary said Ossai deviated from the proposed amendment, saying it is “seeking for punishment for abandoning new born babies,” and not children generally.

TikTok Challenge Used To Circulate Information-Theft Malware, NCC Claims

The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has warned about the potential harm of taking part in the Invisible Challenge on short-form video hosting service, TokTok, revealing that it exposes devices to Information-Stealing Malware.

An NCC-CSIRT statement said threat actors have taken advantage of a viral TikTok challenge, known as the Invisible Challenge, to disseminate an information-stealing malware known as the WASP (or W4SP) stealer.

The WASP stealer, which is high in probability with critical damage potential, is a persistent malware hosted on discord that its developer claim is undetectable.

The statement said: “The Invisible Challenge involves wrapping a somewhat transparent body contouring filter around a presumed naked individual. Attackers are uploading videos to TikTok with a link to software that they claim can reverse the filter’s effects.

“Those who click on the link and attempt to download the software, known as “unfilter,” are infected with the WASP stealer. Suspended accounts had amassed over a million views after initially posting the videos with a link. Following the link leads to the “Space Unfilter” Discord server, which had 32,000 members at its peak but has since been removed by its creators.

“Successful installation will allow the malware to harvest keystrokes, screenshots, network activity, and other information from devices where it is installed. It may also covertly monitor user behaviour and harvest Personally Identifiable Information (PII), including names and passwords, keystrokes from emails, chat programs, websites visited, and financial activity. This malware may be capable of covertly collecting screenshots, video recordings, or the ability to activate any connected camera or microphone”

The Team said some ways to forestall such an attack include avoiding clicking on suspicious links, using anti-malware software on your devices, checking app tray and removing any apps that you do not remember installing or that are dormant and embracing healthy password hygiene practices such as using a password manager.

The CSIRT is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.
