NLNG Explains Low Penetration Of Cooking Gas In Nigerian Domestic Market

Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has expressed commitment  to supply all its Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) production (butane and propane) to the Nigerian domestic market despite feedgas and market challenges.

NLNG’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, made the statement on Thursday  at the Nigerian Association of LPG Marketers (NALPGAM) 35th Annual General Meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He maintained that there were challenges which have slowed the utilisation of LPG in the country, which include the inability of the market to completely absorb NLNG’s propane production, leading to its sparse export of propane to avoid tank-top situations at its plant.

“When we made that commitment last year, the intention was that every molecule of butane and propane that we produce in our facility will come into the domestic market and since then we have made every effort to keep to that since January 2022. We have been successful in achieving supply of 100%  of our butane production. We have not been able to reach 100% with propane, not because we don’t want to but because the market capacity to absorb the propane is just not there. We intend that all the butane and all the propane that we produce goes into the domestic market whether propane is being used to blend with butane as cooking gas, used as autogas, or used in industry to generate power,” he said.

“Our production capacity as NLNG can supply about 400,000 tons per annum which is somewhere roughly about 40% of the current national demand. This means that the balance has to be imported. Last year, we supplied about 400,000 tons per annum into the Nigerian market. But we did that under extremely difficult circumstances where our gas supply into our plant was heavily compromised by numerous upstream factors, the single biggest one of which is crude oil theft. And as a result of the disruption that this created, our capacity utilisation fell. Unfortunately, that remains the case today. If we have more gas input to our plant, we can produce more LPG. So the issue of supply for us starts with addressing the upstream supply challenges, the biggest of which is crude oil theft,” he added.

He said the NLNG’s Board had decided to commit all its LPG products to the domestic market to change the narrative of LPG being exported amidst difficulties faced by Nigerians in accessing energy. He stated that despite NLNG’s commitment to 100% LPG supply into the market, some local producers still export LPG out of the country. He called on all stakeholders to collaborate in reversing the trend.

He described the Decade of Gas plan, which was fully sponsored by NLNG, as one of the most comprehensive plans in the industry. He said stakeholders in the industry will need to work collaboratively to ensure implementation, which will unleash and unlock LPG potential in the country. He said the aim would be to saturate the market which will result in fall in price and excess gas can then be exported as a source of income for the country.

“I think that we need some favourable government policies concerning LPG pricing. We need a utilisation policy that encourages the deepening of this market. The government will need to  adopt a phased removal of kerosene subsidies. We all know the challenges that subsidies provide as a whole,” he said.

CBN Moves To Recover N9.3trn Intervention Loans

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has commenced moves to recover an estimated N9.3 trillion intervention facility given to state governments, companies and individuals to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The Director, Development Finance Department of CBN, Mr Yusuf Yila, conveyed the bank’s move at a media briefing in Abuja.

He said while N3.75 trillion has so far been recovered out of the N9.3 trillion, his bank would not rest on its oars to recover the full loans disbursed to the beneficiaries.

“Of that figure, N5 trillion has not matured because we gave out some long tenor loans in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors which would take some years to mature”, he said.

He warned those with the wrong assumption that the loans were grants and cash gifts, to immediately perish such thoughts because relevant levers of loan recovery structures were being pressed to ensure that the money was totally recovered.

He disclosed that the security agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been enlisted to make debtors to pay up, while the Global Standing Instructions (GSI) has also been activated.

He said:“For the States, we debit them directly at FAAC. For the over N1 trillion facility under the Anchor Borrower’s Programme, we have recovered N400 billion so far.All loans must be paid back. No mercy. We’re working with EFCC to set up a desk to recover the loans. It’s like a revolving scheme and when people pay back, we can give to others. These are loans not grants, including the Targeted Credit Facility. We will chase debtors to recover the money to the last kobo.

“Good thing we have the individuals BVN and we always track monies that move in and go out their accounts. When money comes in, we’ll mop it up.We’re slowing down on intervention programmes not to dump too much liquidity into the economy”.

MC Lively Opens Up On His Pregnancy Scandal

Nigerian Comedian and popular skit maker, MC Lively, sits with Chude Jideonwo, the host of #WithChude, to discuss the start of his career in comedy, acting, and the pregnancy scandal that almost ruined him.

MC Lively, who had studied Law at Obafemi Awolowo University, discussed his struggles with unemployment and underemployment before the start of his career as a skit maker “When I was starting out, I had just finished law school. I was just learning about goals and five-year plans. So, I drew a five-year plan. I went through that goal sheet recently, and I saw a lot of things that I abandoned, but there are also things that I didn’t foresee that could happen which have happened, and I am grateful to God for that. I loved law so much, and I excelled at it, but there was such a struggle between what you did in school and what obtains in real life. How do I go to law school, spend such a huge amount of money, and after I graduate, you are offering to pay me 5,000 naira monthly? It was such a problem.

He spoke on how he got to be on the Ndani web series, Ratings, saying,“I got a mail from Ndani saying that they wanted me to come audition for a new show they were creating. And in my four to five years in this industry, I have hardly ever done an audition, partly because when people want me on a movie, they usually cast me based on the skits I have done. But, for Ratings, they wanted something different, and I was happy to do it. This is because one of my greatest mentors is Frank Donga, and it was Ndani that produced his interview series, so I have always loved Ndani TV. It was such a pleasure to audition for it”.

On the pregnancy and abortion scandal that trended in 2021, He said, “It was a friend of mine I had known for a few years, who always wanted more than a sexual relationship, but I didn’t want that. I saw something in her; I like music a lot, so I’m drawn to people who can sing. She hollered at me one day and said she needed help paying her rent. I think the money was ₦800,000. I didn’t have that amount of money, so I ignored it.

“Some time went by, and she called to say she was on the island and wanted us to hang out, so we did, and it went down. Three weeks later, she sent me a message to say that she was pregnant. She said she wanted to take it out, that her parents were going to kill her. I didn’t even think for one second that I could have been played. One day, she sent me a long text after I didn’t respond to one of her requests for money, threatening me with our messages and voice notes if I didn’t respond to her.

He said a ton of stuff, and I let her know that I wasn’t scared, but I was disappointed. I didn’t even think it was blackmail; I just felt she was throwing tantrums, but I knew, there and then, that there was no pregnancy from the start. She was just trying to squeeze out the ₦800,000 that she wanted for the house rent” he said.
