The Federation of International Football Association has not taken a final position on the leadership crisis rocking the Nigeria Football Federation.
The world body said it is still reviewing the mass resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the Executive Committee.
FIFA confirmed it will send a delegation to Nigeria for an on-the-ground review before deciding next steps.
The resignations followed public pressure over poor results from Nigeria’s national teams, leaving a leadership vacuum in the federation.
The mass resignation created a leadership vacuum within the federation and prompted engagements between Nigerian football authorities and the international football governing bodies.
Due to the development, Acting NFF General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and some representatives of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) travelled to FIFA headquarters in Zurich last Tuesday for discussions with FIFA officials over the situation.
In a letter dated September 7, 2026 and signed by Elkhan Mammadov, FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer, the organisation stated that no decision had been taken on the matter.
The body explained that it was still reviewing the situation in Nigeria and assessing the circumstances surrounding the developments before reaching a final position.
It also indicated that it would hold further consultations with key stakeholders in Nigerian football before making its decision.
It said the planned consultations will involve representatives of the NSC, representatives of the current NFF administration and representatives of the NFF’s various members.
The consultations are expected to give FIFA a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the crisis, the positions of the different stakeholders and other matters that may require consideration under the applicable FIFA, CAF and NFF regulatory frameworks.
