A medical report released by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has revealed that the leader of the Biafran Nation agitation, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is medically fit to continue to stand trial and that he is not favcing any life threatening ailment.
President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) enpanelled the medical experts to examine Kanu’s claim that he is feeling not too well.
The medical team was ordered by Justice James Omotosho, halfway into Kanu’s alleged terrorism trial before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, to ascertain if actually his health status has been compromised.
There were conflicting claims on the issue of Kanu’s health status made by medical experts engaged by the prosecution and the defence.
But, in the NMA panel’s report, submitted to the court on October 13, by the prosecution team led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), part of which was read in the open court during Thursday’s proceedings, it was disclosed the defendant’s ailment is “not life threatening”.
The team certified that the IPOB leader is fit to stand trial.
In his ruling, Justice Omotosho maintained the court was convinced that the defendant could proceed with the trial based on the information contained in the report and in the absence of any objection from lawyers to parties.
He granted the defendant six consecutive days, begining from October 23, to open and close his defence.
Besides, Justice Omotosho granted an oral application by defence lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN) that Kanu’s legal team be granted private consultation opportunity with the defendant, outside the premises of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Agabi said the defendant’s legal team was afraid that its consultation with him (Kanu) could be recorded by the DSS.
The court directed that the private meeting with Kanu be held in the courtroom, during which only the defendant and his lawyers would be present.
