
The House of Representatives has implored the federal government to declare a state of emergency on drugs abuse in Nigeria.
The development was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance brought by Hon. Henry Nwauba, (PDP, Imo), calling for urgent action to be taken to arrest the ugly development amongst youths and adults who are into drug abuse.
Nwauba,who moves the motion, said: “These addictive drugs come by different names as tramadol, codeine syrup, lacatomtom and so on and so forth, and the end point according to many is that drug abuse is fast destroying the future of the country.”
Hon. Toby Okechukwu, (PDP Enugu) and Deputy Minority Leader, condemned the vices in very strong terms while also suggesting that an emergency on illicit drug abuse be declared to stem the ugly tide.
The House adopted the motion unanimously and called on the federal government to be proactive in checking the dangerous trend through an aggressive enlightenment campaign through the national orientation agency.
The lawmakers also implored the NDLEA and other security agencies to up the ante before drugs ingestion among the youths completely obliterate a whole generation of Nigerians.
