The Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, has resolved a dispute that stalled the rollout of 1.55 million smart meters nationwide.
He convened a high-level meeting with the Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria, AMMON.
The action led AMMON to file a Notice of Discontinuance at the Federal High Court in Kano, withdrawing its suit against the Federal Government.
Filed in April 2026, the suit had placed an injunction on bidding for 3 key programmes: DISREP, MAF 3, and the Presidential Metering Initiative.
Following the withdrawal of the suit, procurement activities under the programmes are expected to continue, a move seen as critical to accelerating efforts to close Nigeria’s electricity metering gap.
The Federal Ministry of Power said resolution followed extensive engagements involving the Ministry, the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and other stakeholders.
The discussions produced a mutually acceptable solution that addressed the concerns raised by local meter manufacturers while remaining within the requirements of local and international competitive procurement rules.
According to the Ministry, the agreement convinced AMMON to discontinue the court action, allowing the previously stalled procurement process to resume.
Nigeria’s metering gap has remained one of the biggest challenges confronting the electricity sector, with millions of consumers still subjected to estimated billing.
The Ministry added that the rollout of additional smart meters is expected to improve billing accuracy, strengthen revenue collection by electricity distribution companies and reduce customer complaints arising from estimated billing.
