Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, MESL, operator of the Kainji, Jebba and Zungeru hydro power plants, has launched a sector-wide SCADA training program to improve grid stability and power delivery in Nigeria.
The program will accelerate the integration of power generation companies, GenCos, into the national Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System, SCADA/EMS.
The initiative supports compliance with Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission Order No. NERC/2024/057, which mandates grid-connected generating units to integrate with SCADA/EMS.
Besides, it aligns with the Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO’s June 2025 directive requiring real-time visibility and automated dispatch across the grid.
“Integration of generation units into the national SCADA system is not optional. It is a critical operational and regulatory requirement for real-time monitoring, dispatch coordination and secure grid management,” said Engr. Abdu Mohammed Bello, Managing Director and CEO of NISO, at the training launch at Mainstream Academy in Kainji.
He explained that the training builds technical capacity for GenCos to meet regulatory obligations while strengthening grid reliability and resilience.
MESL is delivering the training through Mainstream Academy, its dedicated learning hub for power sector professionals.
The curriculum covers SCADA architecture, remote terminal unit configuration, cybersecurity protocols and real-time data exchange with the National Control Centre.
Olugbenga Adebola, MESL Head of Corporate Communications, said compliance with the directives will reduce system collapses, optimize load management and improve power delivery to Nigerians.
Usman Muhammad Umar, Executive Director of Corporate Services and founder of the academy, said the program responds directly to regulatory directives aimed at improving grid visibility and coordination.
“By equipping other GenCos with the skills and systems for full SCADA integration, we are supporting a smarter, more resilient national grid that can power Nigeria’s industrial aspirations,” Umar said.
He urged all GenCos yet to comply with SCADA integration to act immediately, saying alignment with operational standards is essential for a stable and efficient power system.
