Rivers State Police have arrested 13 suspects after gunmen assaulted Classic FM reporter Allwell Ene during an investigation in the Garrison area of Port Harcourt.
Police said the suspects belong to a gang that robs and harasses residents and passersby around Garrison, a known blackspot.
Ene was attacked while filming suspected criminals during a solo investigation, police spokesman ASP Blessing Agabe said Monday.
“The journalist, Mr. Allwell Ene, was conducting solo investigative activity in an area marked as a blackspot when he was attacked and physically assaulted by suspected hoodlums for video recording them,” Agabe said.
Commissioner of Police Olugenga Adepoju ordered an immediate probe after the report. The DPO of Olu-Obasanjo Division led operatives to rescue Ene at the scene.
Agabe said a joint operation by the command in the Olu-Obasanjo axis and adjoining areas led to 13 arrests.
“In line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, operatives of the Command has been jointly carrying out coordinated operations within the Olu-Obasanjo axis and adjoining areas. Currently, a total of thirteen (13) suspects have been arrested.
“The suspects are believed to be involved in phone theft and harassment of law-abiding members of the public. Investigations are ongoing and efforts are being intensified to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.” he said.
