The Federal Government has generated the sum of ₦7,121,521,142.00 billion as revenue from the concession of the 40MW Kashimbila Hydropower Plant in Taraba State.
Prof. Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, stated this on Friday at the 8th edition of the 2025 media briefing series hosted by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, at the National Press Centre, Abuja.
He explained that the amount generated in January 2024, was the commencement fee for the first five years into the Special Concession Account of the Federal Government.
The Minister said three dams have been completed and commissioned in the last two years of the current administration.
The dams completed and commissioned include Rafin Yashin Multipurpose Dam, Niger State; Odo-Ape Hydropower Dam, Kogi State and Amla Otukpo, Benue State.
Under the Public Private Partnership(PPP) arrangement, he said one Hydropower Plant and a Cargo Agro-Allied Airport have been concessioned which include 40MW Kashimbilla in Taraba State and Kashimbilla Integrated Cargo/Agro-Allied Airport (Category B).
He further revealed that two dam and hydro-power projects are at various stages of PPP concession, as they include the 460MW Katsina-Ala in Benue State and
20MW Farin Ruwa in Nasarawa State.
As part of the benefits of these dams and hydro-power projects, Utsev said they would provide additional power supply, aid movement of agricultural goods and promote development of cottage industries in the area.
He further stated that
four irrigation projects namely Bakalori Irrigation Project, Zamfara State; Dadin-Kowa Irrigation Project, Gombe State; Micro Irrigation Project at Igbogidigidi Ipapo, Oyo State and Micro Irrigation Project at Gari, Jigawa State have been completed.
He further enumerated water supply projects completed and commissioned by the present administration.
According to him, they include Water Project at Birnin-Kudu Community, Jigawa State, which was designed to provide water to approximately 500 households in Birnin-Kudu and environs.
Others are:”Gashua Water Supply Project, Yobe State with a capacity to supply 3,200 million litres per day, serving over one million residents with clean and potable water in Gashua town and its environs.
“Potiskum Water Supply Project, Yobe State: designed to serve 30,000 persons in Potiskum and environs and Water Project at NYSC Camp, Kubwa, Abuja, which was designed to provide sustainable water supply in the NYSC Orientation Camp.”
He assured that his Ministry would complete and commission about 11 projects on or before the end of 2025.
Other initiatives to be embarked upon by the Ministry include improvement of sanitation facilities in schools, health centres, and public places;
strengthening of capacity of State and Local Government Areas WASH officials on demand creation and hygiene promotion approaches towards achieving open defecation free status as well as engagement of the private sector to leverage investment opportunities in ending open defecation in Nigeria under the Clean Nigeria Campaign in collaboration with UNICEF, among others.
