Sylva, Energy Journalists  Mourn Barkindo

Chief Timiprye Sylva, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and the management of the ministry have condoled with the family of the Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Late Dr. Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, who died  late Tuesday night.

The  former Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) died after attending the ongoing Nigerian Oil and Gas Conference NOG 2022, in Abuja.

Sylva, in a condolence letter signed on behalf of the management, Staff of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, its agencies and the entire oil and gas sector, described the Late OPEC boss as a worthy ambassador of our great country Nigeria whose contributions in the global energy space will be difficult to match.

“On behalf of the Management, Staff of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, its Agencies and the entire Oil and Gas Sector, I wish to convey our sincere condolences over the sudden and unfortunate death of the outgoing Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Dr. Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo.

“Barkindo was indeed a worthy ambassador of our great country Nigeria and his contributions in the global energy space will be difficult to match.

“We share in your grief and pray that the Almighty Allah will grant him eternal rest and the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.May Almighty Allah obliterate his shortcomings and grant him Aljannat Firdous: – Amen” reads the letter in parts.

Besides,the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria, NAEC, mourned Barkindo,saying the global energy industry will miss.

In a statement , Chairman of NAEC, Mr Olu Phillips, said “The measures he brought to balancing geo-politics and energy security is quite remarkable. I find it quite difficult to take this all in considering that he spoke to us at the ongoing Nigeria oil and gas conference on Tuesday.

He said Mr. Barkindo was a great man and one of the finest in the energy sector.

“He Left great legacies for the industry and we pray to God to console his family”, he added

It would be recalled that Mele Kyari, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, announced his demise in a tweet in the early hours of Wednesday.

Kyari said he died at about 11p.m on Tuesday few hours after delivering a speech to oil and gas stakeholders at the ongoing 2022 Nigerian oil and gas conference and exhibition in Abuja.

After the event, he met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the statehouse alongside a delegation from the OPEC secretariat.

He was aged 63.

He described his departure as a great loss to his immediate family, NNPC Nigeria, OPEC and the global energy community.

“We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11 pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community,” Kyari tweeted.

Barkindo is the third ex-NNPC GMD to have passed on in two years — Maikanti Baru died in May 2020 and Joseph Dawha in August 2020.
