A suspected transformer vandal has been electrocuted to death while attempting to vandalise a transformer in Abam-Ama community, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when power was restored while the yet-to-be-identified man was allegedly tampering with the facility.

The Civilian Joint Task Force Commander in Okrika LGA, Igwe Godswill, who disclosed this on Tuesday, said members of the group discovered the deceased during a patrol of the area.

The man was believed to have been electrocuted after power was restored while he was allegedly vandalising the transformer.

Godswill said members of the group found saw blades, a torch and other items at the scene, suggesting that the deceased may have been attempting to steal components from the transformer.

He said, “When we got to the scene, we saw saw blades, a torch and other items. From all indications, he went there to steal from the transformer, and when power was restored in the middle of the night, he was electrocuted. That was how he died.”

He stated that the incident had been reported to the Okrika Police Division for investigation.

He condemned the increasing incidents of theft and vandalism in communities, urging youths and residents to desist from criminal activities and embrace legitimate means of livelihood.

He said, “We are calling on everybody, especially the community and the youths, to shun stealing and look for something meaningful to do. There are different ways to feed your families, not by stealing.

“We are also encouraging everybody to remain vigilant in their communities. Whenever you notice strange movements or suspicious activities, you should alert the security agencies so they can intervene.”
