There is no doubt that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has demonstrated commitment to infrastructure development and has, in many respects, delivered commendable results. Like every public official, however, he is not infallible.
Every minister is supported by a team of seasoned professionals, including career directors, engineers, planners, and other technical experts. Minister Wike is no exception.
Driven by a desire to make a lasting impact, his administration has embarked on several ambitious projects, including the construction of about ten new flyovers across Abuja. These achievements deserve recognition.
However, I believe the recent remodeling of the Abuja City Gate missed an important opportunity to address the real challenges faced by commuters.
A drive through the area during the morning or evening rush hours reveals that traffic congestion has worsened.
Rather than easing traffic flow, the new design appears to have created additional bottlenecks by reducing four lanes to two at a critical point. This has resulted in longer travel times, frequent gridlock, and many public servants arriving late to work.
The situation becomes even more difficult during rainfall, when the area experiences severe traffic buildup, further compounding the daily frustrations of motorists.
While the remodeled City Gate may have enhanced the aesthetics of the entrance to Abuja and created a tourist attraction for visitors and young people, infrastructure projects should first and foremost solve practical problems affecting residents.
I therefore respectfully urge the FCT Minister to review the current design as a matter of urgency and consider expanding the traffic lanes to improve vehicular movement. The people need infrastructure that is not only beautiful but also functional, efficient, and responsive to their daily needs.
