Two new bills have been introduced into the House of Representatives intended at formalizing homeschooling in the country.

The bills, titled the “Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (HB.1860)” and the “Child’s Rights Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (HB.1859),” were sponsored by Hon. Ghali Mustapha Tijjani of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) member from Kano.

The proposed amendments seek to recognize and regulate homeschooling as a viable educational option, ensuring broader access to quality education for Nigerian children, while also aligning with international standards of child rights and education.

The proposed bill aims to strengthen adherence to national educational standards by introducing clear mechanisms for compliance.

According to Tijani,”Uniform national exams such as WAEC, NECO, and Common Entrance will serve as vital checkpoints to assess compliance with the national curriculum.”

Acknowledging the challenges in overseeing public schools, he emphasized that these exams would provide consistency and ensure that educational standards are met.

He further clarified that the bill presents an alternative educational pathway, not a substitute for traditional schooling. “It is entirely optional. Parents who prefer conventional schools are free to continue.

However, for those who may not have the financial means, this bill offers a legal option for homeschooling,” he explained.

Canvassing for support,Tijani urged Nigerians, particularly members of the media, to back the bill.

He described it as “a policy that serves the common man” and expressed optimism that it would gain both legislative and public backing.
