Politicians defecting from the Oyo State Government are selfish and self-serving, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor Seyi Makinde, Dapo Falade, has said
Falade, who is also Deputy Director of the APM Governorship Campaign Council for 2027, said this during an interview on Dominion 106.1FM, Ibadan, while reacting to recent resignations of commissioners, special advisers and aides.
According to him, defection is not new in Nigeria, dating back to cross-carpeting in the First Republic, but the current wave in Oyo is driven by personal ambition ahead of 2027, not public welfare.
“Looking at the timing of the defection, everything is about politics. What we are seeing is a transfer of loyalty from one party to another,” he said.
He maintained that the welfare of the people must come before personal interest, stressing that in politics there are no permanent enemies or friends, but permanent interests.
He described Makinde as a calm and focused leader who has refused to be distracted, adding that even betrayal can fulfil a greater purpose, as seen in the biblical story of Jesus.
He said that similar resignations under former Governor Abiola Ajimobi did not stop Ajimobi from winning re-election as the first governor to serve two terms in Oyo State.
He punctured claims that Makinde has an anointed successor, saying the governor never signed any pact with any aspirant for 2027, and said governance has not suffered as the deputy governor and other appointees remain active.
He expressed optimism that APM candidate Bimbo Adekanmbi is best placed to continue Makinde’s legacy from May 29, 2027.
