The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Epe Branch has cautioned its members against toxic and unprofessional posts on social media, saying such conduct undermines the dignity of the legal profession in the country.
In a statement on Saturday, the Branch Chairman, Mr Tansiru Ogunlaja, Esq noted the recent warning by the NBA President on disciplinary action against lawyers involved in abusive and offensive online publications.
He described the warning as a timely reminder that professional responsibility does not end in court, in chambers or in the office, but extends to the digital space.
According to him, while members are entitled to freedom of expression, the Branch said such rights must be exercised with civility, decorum and respect. It cautioned members to be mindful of their posts on WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok and other platforms.
He cautioned against abusive, insulting or defamatory comments, personal attacks, reckless allegations, disclosure of confidential client information and online confrontations likely to bring the profession into disrepute.
He urged members to consider the professional, ethical and legal implications before posting and to use appropriate channels to resolve grievances instead of resorting to online attacks.
He reaffirmed his chapter’s commitment to promoting professionalism, discipline and mutual respect among members.
