The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, said Nigerians are focused on steady power supply, not on disputes over regulatory powers between federal and state governments.
Speaking at a workshop in Abuja, Oseni said the success of the country’s evolving multi-tier electricity market will hinge on dialogue, cooperation and coordinated action among all regulatory and policymaking institutions.
He added:“Nigerians do not really care about who regulates what or who is responsible for policymaking, but they strongly care about the availability and reliability of supply,” he said.
He implored stakeholders to put aside institutional rivalry and personal interests in favour of collaboration aimed at delivering improved outcomes for electricity consumers.
Oseni also proposed the creation of a more structured platform for continuous policy engagement between the Federal Government and state governments as Nigeria implements electricity market decentralisation.
He suggested that the existing National Council on Power (NACOP) be reformed to enable more regular and focused meetings between the Minister of Power and state commissioners responsible for electricity.
According to him, more frequent policy engagements would improve coordination on policy implementation and help address emerging issues during the transition to the decentralised electricity market.
He explained that such engagements would provide regular touchpoints between federal and state institutions, strengthening cooperation as states assume greater responsibilities under the evolving electricity sector framework.
