The Obi of Onitsha Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe has gone into seclusion as this year’s Ofala festival approaches.
The purpose of the monarch’s seclusion is to prepare himself spiritually and be clean enough to commune with the spirits.
The theme of the festival is, “Njiko na Ntachi” (Unity and Perseverance).
A statement signed by Ozonmma Tony Nezieanya, a member of Media lead, strategic marketing communication subcommittee, stated that these sacred rituals are vital part of Onitsha’s rich cultural heritage.
The monarch’s seclusion from the public is known in Igbo language as ‘Inye Ukwu Na Nlo Eze Onicha ‘ (Spiritual Retreat of the Monarch), shields him from public view.
Among other early rituals are Owuwaji (Yam Festival) which kicks off the season of celebration and thanksgiving and Ogbalido (Feast of Atonement): a sacred ceremony marking the eve of the monarch’s emergence; the Grand Celebration
The grand celebration of Ofala Festival 2025 will be highlighted by Iru Ofala which comes on October 17. It is day of majesty and splendor, reserved for the monarch and his chiefs.
This is followed by Azu Ofala which is October 18; a day for the people, when age grades troop out in colorful displays to pay homage to the monarch.
“We are excited to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Onitsha through the Ofala Festival. This year’s theme, ‘Njiko na Ntachi,’ emphasizes the importance of unity and perseverance in our
community,” said Nn’emeka Maduegbuna, Chairman, Ofala Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee and ace broadcaster.
