Adamawa Targets 1.4m Children In New Polio Vaccination Drive

The Adamawa Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ADPHCDA) has unveiled a polio vaccination campaign aimed at reaching 1.4 million children, with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Speaking at the 2025 National Immunisation Day celebration in Malkohi, Yola South LGA, on Saturday, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and future of children.

Fintiri, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Ibrahim Mijinyawa, emphasised that healthcare remains a top priority for his government.

He urged traditional leaders to mobilise parents and caregivers to ensure their children are vaccinated during the campaign, describing it as a critical step towards eradicating polio from the state.

The governor also implored all stakeholders to collaborate closely to guarantee the campaign’s success.

In her remarks, the Chief of UNICEF’s Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, appealed to parents and caregivers to seize the opportunity presented by the campaign, stressing that it could mark the final push to eliminate polio.

She noted that UNICEF is working in partnership with the Adamawa State Government to enhance the well-being of children across the state and the country at large.

She reassured the public of the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness, urging community support and acceptance.

Also speaking, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Coordinator in Adamawa, Dr. Yusuf Abdulkareem, encouraged parents to prioritise all immunisation exercises as a means of strengthening children’s immunity, describing children as “the leaders of tomorrow.”

Abdulkareem further called on the government to intensify efforts in combating malaria across the state.

The District Head of Yola South LGA, Alhaji Zubairu Mustapha, commended development partners for their contributions to the health sector and pledged full support to the government’s healthcare initiatives.

He also promised to redouble efforts in sensitising his community members to prioritise the health and well-being of their children.
