The House of Representatives has called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to mandate Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating in the country to immediately block access to all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content.

The House  also urged the NCC to enforce the full provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act against any defaulting ISPs that fail to comply with the directive.

The resolution of House follows the adoption of a motion, titled “Need to Block Internet Websites Hosting Pornographic Content and Sanction Defaulting Internet Service Providers,” was introduced by Hon. Dalhatu Shehu Tafoki (APC, Kano).

In presenting the motion, Tafoki highlighted that cyber pornography is rapidly emerging as a global issue, yet no decisive actions have been taken to address the growing problem of online pornography in Nigeria.

According to him, Nigeria is a deeply religious nation, with all the major religions condemning nudity and obscenity in any form.

He emphasized that many countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have implemented laws banning pornography, in alignment with their cultural and religious values.

He expressed concern that some of the immediate effects of viewing pornographic contents include:

“(a) causing deception in marriage and which may later on, affect family life,

(b) promoting adultery, prostitution and many unreal expectations that can result in dangerous promiscuous behavior.
