I commend the Ogun State Government for setting the record straight on the territorial integrity of Irokun, a coastal community in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun state, rich in natural resources. This decisive step is appreciated, as it provides much-needed clarity on the rightful ownership of the community.

However, declarations alone are insufficient. It is imperative that the government takes concrete steps to demonstrate its commitment to the people of Irokun.

Beyond affirming its position, the state must awaken to its responsibility by providing essential infrastructure and basic amenities—good roads, reliable water supply, electricity, healthcare facilities, and quality education—that will tangibly improve the lives of the dwellers of Irokun.

The community deserves to experience the benefits of development, and such initiatives will reinforce Ogun State Government’s claim over the area.

Moreover, it is important to recognize that Irokun is one of the key communities in Ogun State poised to confer oil-producing status on the state.

This potential economic advantage makes Irokun a strategic asset that Ogun State cannot afford to lose to a neighboring state. The development and integration of Irokun into the state’s growth agenda will not only benefit its residents but will also serve as a robust signal to the Ondo State Government and its allies that Irokun is firmly and indisputably part of Ogun State.

Investing in Irokun is, therefore, both a matter of social justice and a strategic imperative. By ensuring that the people of Irokun receive the basic amenities they deserve, the Ogun State Government will reinforce its authority and safeguard its economic interests.

Anything less than decisive action risks reducing these promises to mere window dressing, an approach that could ultimately backfire.

Now is the time for the Ogun State Government to turn its declarations into tangible benefits for the good people of Irokun and, by extension, Ogun Waterside Local Government.

Empowering Irokun is not just an option; it is a necessity for a more prosperous Ogun State.
