The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, has warned Chief Judges and all judicial officers in the country over the granting of frivolous ex-parte orders in matters brought by politicians.
He gave the warning at a crucial closed door meeting held at the National Judicial Council, Abuja with seven Chief Judges over the granting of conflicting exparte orders within their jurisdictions.
According to him,the NJC will no longer condone any order that will ridicule and expose the country’s judiciary to public distrust.
The CJN vowed that the NJC will not hesitate to sanction any Judge found wanting in the discharge of his adjudicatory duties.
He said:”We must therefore put an end to indiscriminate granting of exparte orders, conflicting judgments or rulings occasioned by forum-shopping. Your job as head of courts is a sacred one, and it therefore includes you vicariously taking the sins of others. There must be an end to this nonsense. You shall henceforth take absolute charge in assigning cases or matters, especially political personally. We shall make example with these three Judges and never shall we condone such act”.
He cautioned the Chief Judges to avoid unnecessary assumption of jurisdiction in matters with similar subject and parties already before another court, protect the court from lawyers that are out for forum shopping and work in line with all their Judges to salvage the image of the judiciary.
