The Nigerian Metrological Agency (NiMET) has predicted three days of heavy rainfall in four northern and 15 other southern states of the country.
The agency in a statement by Prof. Mansur Matazu, its Director-General said that the three days heavy rainfall mentioned the three northern states as Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue and Kwara.
The 15 southern states that will witness the heavy rainfall are: Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, Ondo, Edo, and Delta.
According to the agency, there are chances of moderate rainfall over parts of Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Kaduna, Bauchi, Plateau, Taraba and Adamawa.
Others are Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Gombe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Federal Capital Territory, Anambra and Imo states.
It added that light rains are expected over the rest of the country within the three days period.
It said due to the presence of good amount of soil-moisture and the expected heavy rainfall over the aforementioned states, there are increased chances of flash flood events on roads, settlements, farmlands and bridges.
It added that there are also chances of reduced horizontal visibility, which could disrupt vehicular traffic and flight operations and advised the public to exercise restraint, avoid low-lying areas and fast flowing runoff waters during the period.
“There are chances of moderate to heavy rainfall events especially on the second and third days, leading to slippery roads, reducing travel time, with increased likelihood of cars skidding off the road and chances of crashes.
“Strong winds are expected to accompany the moderate to heavy rains, which can lead to falling of unsecured objects, weak buildings, and exposed structures. Hence, the public is advised to be prepared for these events to avoid damages from rain-related hazard and watch out for updates,” it added.
