Three distinguished lecturers  from the  University of Lagos (UNILAG) have been elected into top positions of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP) at the end of its scientific and symposium meeting in Accra,Ghana
Professor Cecilia Ihuoma Igwilo emerged as the President of the College, while Professor Ibrahim Adekunle Oreagba and Dr. Olufunsho Awodele,won  the positions of the Secretary General and Chairman, Faculty of Public Health respectively .
The election was part of  the highlights of the 32nd and 33rd (Combined) Annual General Meeting and  Scientific Symposium and 62nd & 63rd Council Meeting of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP) with the theme: Universal Health Coverage: The Roles of Digital and Collaborative Services”.
The new WAPCP President, Prof. Cecilia Ihuoma Igwilo, became Nigeria’s first female professor of Pharmacy in 1994.
She attended University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife) where she bagged a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree with First Class honours in 1977 and a Master of Science degree in Pharmaceutics in 1979. She obtained a Ph.D. in Pharmacy in 1983 from Chelsea College, University of London.
She served as the Acting Head/Head, Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology from 1993-1999, she was Dean, School of Pharmacy, University of Lagos from 2001 to 2003. She has also served as Director, Academic Planning Unit (2006-2012) and Director, School of Foundation Studies (2012-2016)
She  is also the First Vice President of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP) in 2017 and served as the Chief Examiner, Editor in Chief and Chairman, Faculty of Drug Production and Quality Assurance of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists.
The scribe of WAPCP; Prof. Ibrahim Adekunle Oreagba,is currently the Head of Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology, College of Medicine University of Lagos.
He is also a Lead investigator at the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Standardisation and Regulatory Science of the University of Lagos.
He  is a Consultant Pharmacist and Clinical Pharmacologist with a Masters and Doctorate degree in Pharmacology. He also has a Post Graduate Certificate in Pharmaco-epidemiology and Pharmacovigilance from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine London U.K.
He is also a seasoned resource person and examiner of the the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP).
The new Chairman, Faculty of Public Health, WAPCP; Dr. Olufunsho Awodele, is an Associate Professor and Consultant Toxicologist/Pharmacoepidemiologist in the Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology, College of Medicine, University of Lagos. He won the Professor AFB Mabadeje’s prize as the best M.Sc. Pharmacology graduating student in 2004; best University of Lagos PhD thesis award in 2009, best National Universities Commission (NUC) Doctoral Thesis Award in Pharmacy (2009) and best University of Lagos researcher of the year (2010).
Dr. Awodele recently served as a Toxicologist with International Maritime Organization London on Evaluation of Hazards of Harmful Substances carried by Ships.
He has published more than 100 research papers in reputable journals and attended several academic conferences in South Africa, India, United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
The West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP), formerly known as The West African Pharmaceutical Federation (WAPF), was founded on the 13th October, 1976 in Monrovia, Liberia by representatives of National Pharmaceutical Societies of eight African countries namely; the Republics of Benin, Ghana, The Gambia, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
Congratulating the trio,the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos; Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe ,commended them for sustaining the University’s winning sprit at such a continental level.
 He said the feats achieved by the three lecturers speak volume  of the University of Lagos an Institution of first choice and the nation’s pride.
