TotalEnergies Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited has partnered with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC, to deploy its proprietary methane detection technology across oil and gas sites in Nigeria as part of efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The technology, known as AUSEA, was announced at the 2026 Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria, NAEC, Annual Energy Conference in Lagos.
Manager, Communication Projects at TotalEnergies in Nigeria, Mr. Senan Murray, explained that the drone-mounted system allows for accurate monitoring and control of methane leaks.
“We partnered with NNPC to improve methane monitoring across our sites using our AUSEA proprietary technology. If you monitor methane emissions, you can control it,” Murray said.
According to him, the initiative is part of TotalEnergies’ broader strategy to produce more energy with fewer emissions, in line with global energy transition goals.
He also disclosed that the company has taken two major Final Investment Decisions in the last 14 months.
“In June 2024 we took FID with NNPC and our partners to develop Ubeta, and only last month we took another FID to develop the IMA gas project,” he said.
Both projects, he said, are designed with zero routine flaring and will benefit from Federal Government incentives for non-associated gas development.
“Both FIDs are with zero routine flaring. We are taking advantage of the government’s incentives for non-associated gas,” he said.
He described the current investment climate as encouraging for more projects.
“These are exciting times, the environment is now very amenable to business, and we will see even more in the coming months and years,” he added.
He noted that TotalEnergies has operated in Nigeria for 70 years in the downstream and 67 years in the upstream, and remains committed to telling the story of Nigeria’s energy sector through partnership with the media.
He added: “On behalf of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, we thank you for the opportunity to be part of this year’s conference. You’ve done this very faithfully over the past decades and we are delighted to partner with you to make sure the story of Nigeria’s energy sector is told properly.”
