The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has unveiled a new coordination platform bringing together electricity regulators, aimed at tightening oversight and improving consistency across Nigeria’s power market.

Known as the Forum of Nigerian Electricity Regulators (FONER), the initiative was unveiled on Wednesday during the first quarter 2026 meeting between NERC and State Electricity Regulators (SERs) held in Lagos.

Speaking, NERC Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, explained that the forum is central to managing Nigeria’s transition toward a decentralised electricity system, warning that weak coordination could create gaps that operators might exploit.

He emphasized the need that regulators at all levels must work together to narrow potential gaps and ensure that the intent of the Electricity Act 2023 is fully realised.

The new body is backed by statutory provisions and is expected to guide regulatory alignment nationwide, he said.

He added:”FONER is designed to function as a standing platform for dialogue between NERC and state regulators, with a focus on harmonising tariff methodologies, strengthening market rules, and improving consumer protection standards. It will also support technical capacity development through peer learning and serve as a consultative channel for ongoing electricity market reforms.”
