Blackout looms in major parts of Nigeria as Seplat Energy Plc announced routine maintenance on its major gas production facilities.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited confirmed this on Thursday in a statement signed by Andy Odeh, its Chief Corporate Communications Officer.
According to the statement, Seplat Energy, one of its joint venture partners and a key supplier of gas into the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC) pipeline network, has scheduled maintenance activities from February 12 to 15.
The four-day activity is part of standard safety and asset integrity procedures aimed at ensuring the long-term reliability and efficiency of critical gas infrastructure,Odeh clarified.
The statement quoted that during the maintenance window, officials said there will be a temporary reduction in gas volumes injected into the NGIC pipeline system.
This,it said, may lead to limited gas availability for some power generation companies that depend on the supply, potentially resulting in modest declines in electricity output nationwide.
The company emphasized that the maintenance is corrective and intended to reduce the likelihood of unexpected outages that could cause more severe disruptions.
“This planned activity forms part of standard industry safety and asset integrity protocols designed to ensure continued reliability, efficiency, and safe operation of critical gas infrastructure,” the company added.
NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), the statement quoted, is engaging alternative gas suppliers to bridge potential supply gaps and maintain stability across the network in order to cushion the effect, adding that both NNPC and Seplat are coordinating closely to ensure the work is completed safely and on schedule.
It added: “Upon completion of the maintenance exercise, full gas supply into the NGIC system is expected to resume promptly, enabling affected power generation companies to return to normal operations.”
