The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has faulted the social media reports surrounding the tragic death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, a Nigerian singer and vocalist who died on January 31, 2026, from severe neurotoxic complications as a result snake bite.
The hospital clarified that upon the patient’s arrival, the hospital’s medical team acted promptly and in line with established emergency care protocols.
In a statement on Sunday, the hospital said immediate interventions included resuscitation, administration of intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen support, and the provision of polyvalent anti-snake venom.
It added:”Following a rapid but comprehensive clinical assessment, it was determined that the patient had suffered advanced neurotoxic effects from the snake bite. While preparations were underway to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for specialised care, her condition deteriorated suddenly shortly before the transfer.
“The attending medical team immediately commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other advanced life-saving measures. Despite sustained and coordinated efforts by the clinical team, the patient could not be revived.
“The management of FMC Abuja firmly refutes claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom or delayed medical response, describing such reports as inaccurate and misleading. The centre maintains functional emergency response systems and remains committed to delivering timely, compassionate, and quality healthcare services.”
It reiterated its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and continuous improvement in patient care.
The hospital advised members of the public to seek information from verified and credible sources and to avoid speculation that may cause distress to affected families.
It added:”The management of the hospital extends its deepest sympathies to the Nwagene family in this moment of profound loss. We recognise the pain of losing a loved one and share in the family’s grief.”
