The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) is reporting a likely monthly loss exceeding N1 billion due to a recent reduction in electricity tariffs, which was recently enforced by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC).
The slash reduced the Band A customer tariff from N209.50 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to N160.40/kWh starting August 1, 2025.
According to the company, implementing the reduced tariff would make it impossible for the company to meet its financial obligations to the electricity market.
In a statement on Tuesday, the power company decided to lower the volume of energy supplied to its subsidiary, Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), by about 50 percent to mitigate these losses
The development made parts of Enugu State to experience black out for the past four days on account of a significant reduction in electricity supply from the parent company, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), which distributes power in the area.
It further explained that the disruption followed the recent tariff order issued by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), which lowered the tariff for Band A customers from N209.50 per kilowatt-hour to N160.40 per kilowatt-hour.
Sequel to the review of the new tariff, EEDC determined that implementing it would lead to a monthly loss exceeding N1 billion, making it financially unsustainable to maintain the previous energy supply levels to MEDL.
It said:”As a result, EEDC reduced the electricity volume supplied to MEDL by about 50%, severely impacting MEDL’s ability to serve customers in parts of Enugu State. MEDL clarified that it does not receive electricity directly from the national grid but depends solely on EEDC, which handles bulk electricity trading through the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading company (NBET)”.
The management of MEDL management expressed regret over the inconvenience to customers
It also acknowledged a delay in communicating this development due to receiving late notice of the tariff order details and appealed for customer patience and understanding during efforts to restore normal power supply.
