The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) has issued a two-week ultimatum to Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) seeking payment of productivity bonuses and other outstanding staff benefits.

The workers will resume industrial action if their demands are not met by the management of the power firm, they warned.

The association conveyed this a letter dated 4th June, 2025, and signed by Rosemary Odey, Deputy General Secretary, Corporate Communications, citing management’s failure to clear all outstanding staff benefits outlined in a letter dated November 5, 2024, despite seven months elapsing.

The union emphasized that the recent significant improvement in cash collections—over 98 billion Naira in the last three months—and other revenue milestones were achieved through the dedication of the workforce.

According to SSAEAC, critical unresolved issues, including: “Collapse of health services due to high indebtedness, resulting in the deaths of about seven staff members in the past month, with more at risk. Non-payment of the 2024 productivity bonus. Non-remittance of 18 months of pension deductions. Failure to implement the National Minimum Wage. Incomplete review of conditions of service. Non-regularization and improper placement of staff. Lack of confirmation for staff on acting appointments. No promotions conducted since 2013. Non-implementation of career path. Non-remittance of third party deduction (Union check off dues) and Refusal to fund Business Districts and non-procurement of operational materials.

“In view of all the above, your Management is hereby put on notice to resolve all the outstanding issues within one week of receipt of this letter without any further notice as this will no longer be accepted by our Association. Consequently, all officers are hereby directed to be on standby to resume with the earlier notice of 5th November, 2024. A stitch in time saves nine”.

Besides,  the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) also issued a formal notice announcing the resumption of a previously suspended industrial action against the AEDC due to unfulfilled commitments on key labour issues.

The action was contained in a letter 3rd June 2025, and signed by the Assistant General Secretary of the workers’ union, Opaluwa Eleojo Simeon.

The union had earlier agreed on November 27, 2024, to suspend the strike following a trade dispute but highlighted persistent unresolved grievances, including non-remittance of pension deductions for 16 months, failure to implement the national minimum wage, lack of staff promotions and stagnation over 10 years and non-confirmation of acting appointments and irregular staff placements.

Other unresolved issues include refusal to convert ad-hoc staff to permanent status, collapse of health services due to unpaid hospital bills, non-remittance of 10 months’ PAYE taxes. Incomplete review of conditions of service and career path implementation, and interference by the board in daily company operations and non-payment of union dues and 2024 productivity bonuses.

The union also emphasized that despite these challenges, workers have significantly increased company revenue by over 95 billion naira in the past 90 days, often without adequate resources and under stressful conditions that have led to a high number of deaths.

The notice warned  that the strike will resume immediately upon receipt of the letter, with full mobilization of union councils across Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The union vows to sustain the industrial action until all demands are met, affirming the power of unity in their struggle.
