The University of Ibadan Students’ Union Government,Wednesday embarked on a peaceful protest, alongside medical students from the University College Hospital (UCH).

They condemned the persistent power outage that has disrupted surgical procedures, interrupted life-saving treatments, and compromised vaccine storage in the university.

The 82 days power outage at UCH,was due to unpaid electricity bills owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

Despite previous disconnections in November 2023,the hospital’s power supply was again disconnected in March 2024.

Bolaji Aweda, the Students’ Union President, said the power outage has directly affected students.

He added:”We are protesting against this situation, which has impacted our students severely.IBEDC demands that UCH settle its debt before restoring power.”

The medical students threatened to shut down federal government facilities if electricity is not restored to UCH immediately.

At the state secretariat, the protesting students presented their demands to the State Governor’s representative,CP Sunday Odukoya, who commended their peaceful conduct and promised to relay their message to the relevant authorities.
