The Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, has implored in-coming administration in the country on improved power sector.
President of the group,Kunle Olubiyo,in a statement made available to Premium News recently, specifically tasked the in-coming government to take a deeper look at the entire gamut of the power sector privatisation exercise and overhaul the process.
According to him, there was need for the government to break the current unhealthy monopoly of the present electricity distribution companies’ franchises into smaller units .
He also implored the federal government to consider de-investing its 40% equity stakeholding / equity shares completely from the power generation post privatised electricity market in the country.
The federal government,he said, should also notate the existing vesting contracts with a view to reducing the current burden of NBET Plc
He added:”We need to also make all the noise by March this year to clean up the mess and provide a direction for in-coming administration that would emerged between March ,2023 and May 29th ,2023 .We ve got to work closely with the Transition Committee that would be set up in March ,2023 that would function till May,2023″.
To him,the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission ( NERC),should live up to its responsibility of effectively monitoring of the electricity distribution licensees/electricity market and further demonstrate the ability to be an incorruptible judge and fearless arbiter.
He added:”NERC must more than before show that it has liver and capacity and capability to sanction erring and delinquent distribution licensees.Unlike before,
there must be consequences for impunity, recklessness and gaming of the system/gaming of the electricity market”.
