Kano Sub Regional office of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), over the weekend unveiled plans to overhaul 60 year old Kano power transmission lines.

The Assistant General Manager, Kano Sub-Region, Engr. Muhammad Kamar Bello, explained that the moved was designed to boost their capacity in line with the existing demand.

He stated that Kano state has a single line that supplies energy to the state from Kaduna which was installed 60 years ago.

Malam Bello disclosed that “DanAgundi Substation was built 50 years ago on 80 megawatts capacity but today, it is operating more than 280 megawatts which made expedient to overhaul it to accommodate desired capacity,”

He said that several towers, transmission lines within the corridor would be reconstructed to boost the capacity.

He disclosed  that over the years there have been encroachments on the Right of Way by illegal structures across several transmission lines.

He said so far TCN has marked no fewer than 1000 illegal structures stretching over 9.8km between Dan’Agundi to Samegu transmission corridor , adding that such structures would be demolished to pave way for contractors to mobilise to society soon.

He added: “We have marked 1000 illegal structures within the corridor of Dan’Agundi to Samegu power stations spanning 9.8km stretch that would give way . In addition any structure within safe haven of high voltage 3,330kv voltage, and  1,330kv would be cleared to accommodate 20m radius, and 15 m radius respectively.”

According to him, despite upsurge in population of the city, power consumption has remained static. due largely to the capacity of a sole distribution line to the city, and TCN is poised to reverse the trend.

He said that civil works on the affected transmission lines would not affect power supply to the city and its franchise,  adding that the job would be completed within 3 months.
