Reps Move To Penalize Employers For Non Payment Of Salaries

The House of Representatives on Tuesday advanced efforts aimed prohibiting non payment of salaries and wages by employers of labour, as well as improve the general welfare of employees within the public and private sectors of the economy.

The bill which passed second reading on the floor of the House during plenary is being sponsored by the House Speaker, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila.

Titled: ‘HB 07. Employees (Unpaid Wages Prohibition) Bill, 2019’, the proposed legislation seeks to ensure the timely remuneration of employees, whether in the public or private sector,prohibit the withholding of payment due to employees by employers in the guise of using same to cover the cost of employee negligence and prescribe penalties against employers for violations of the provisions of the bill

It also seeks to provide compensation for employees and improve the general welfare conditions of employment for labour in
Nigeria.
