Kidnapped victims from Oorelope Local Government in Oyo State are still in captivity, the council chairman and police have said.
They faulted Sunday Igboho’s claim that the victims had been rescued, saying his account is false.
In a statement issued Sunday, June 21, 2026 by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Ogundiran Jacob Oluwale, the council said the reports are “false, misleading, and do not reflect the current reality on the ground.
“The kidnapped victims are yet to regain their freedom. We urge members of the public to disregard any information suggesting otherwise unless it emanates from official and credible sources.”
According to him, security agencies at both state and local levels are making “concerted efforts” to secure the safe rescue of the victims.
He said relevant authorities have continued to deploy necessary resources and strategies to ensure a positive outcome.
Acknowledging that the situation remains a source of concern to residents, Oluwale said he is encouraged by the commitment and collaboration from security formations and individuals supporting the rescue efforts.
The chairman appreciated security agencies, stakeholders, community leaders and citizens who have provided assistance, intelligence, prayers and support during the period.
“The protection of lives and property remains a top priority of this administration, and no effort will be spared in ensuring the safe return of the victims,” he said.
The Oyo State Police Command said it had no official confirmation that the victims were rescued and found no evidence linking Igboho to any rescue operation.
“The Nigeria Police Force has officially debunked claims that the hostages have been safely released,” the command said in a statement.
The Command emphasised that the Oyo State Commissioner of Police had not confirmed Igboho’s involvement in any operation.
The Command also cautioned against relying on unverified social media reports, stressing that official investigations were still ongoing and no operational link had been established between Igboho and the reported developments.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the position of the Command, describing the circulating reports as “unsubstantiated” and urging the public to await verified information.
